Reconnecting with nature is crucial for mental and physical well-being. In today's fast-paced world, where digital distractions abound, immersing oneself in natural surroundings restores inner peace and reduces stress.
Shinrin-yoku, which translates roughly to "forest bathing" in English, is a Japanese practice that involves immersing oneself in nature to promote well-being. Though people often assume it has its roots in the country's ancient indigenous religion of Shinto, it actually originated in the 1980s when Tomohide Akiyama — then director of Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries — used studies on the therapeutic benefits of being in nature as the basis for officially promoting shinrin-yoku to counter the effects of urbanization and technological advancements. The idea of shinrin-yoku was to encourage people to reconnect with nature and protect Japan's forests.
Scientific studies support the physiological and psychological benefits of shinrin-yoku, showing lowered blood pressure, reduced cortisol levels, improved mood, and enhanced cognitive function. Beyond physical health benefits, it fosters a deeper connection with nature, promoting mindfulness and relaxation. Proponents argue that regular practice can contribute to overall mental and emotional well-being, making shinrin-yoku not just a leisure activity but a holistic health practice to counteract the pressures of modern life.
There are few rules around how to “bathe” in the forest, but the easiest way to start is to go to a forest, be present, and tune into nature with all five senses. Put your phone away and enjoy the experience of being among nature.
