Me trying to explain that period cramps are a thing that do exist and do hurt to some ignorant 10 yr old boy:
The ten yr old boy: ‘oK, bUt HaVe YoU eVeR bEeN kIcKeD iN tHe BaLlZ?
Um no. But I have been kicked in the vagina, punched and kicked in the stomach, pulled by my hair, had my ear pinched, stepped on the face, bitten on the arm, and almost had my arm ripped off (dw this is all from play fighting w my sister and cousins/dog)
There are 3 differences between that and period cramps.
Difference 1 - Internal vs External. Internal injuries/discomforts can affect a far wider area of the body, (eg; hitting your head vs a headache - hitting it affects a small area, while headache makes your whole head throb)
Difference 2 - How long the pain lasts. Getting punched/kicked will cause pain for a relatively short amount of time, depending on the severity. And I mean, come on. We’re talking in the context of 10 year old boys fighting on yard. It’s really not that bad. Whereas severe period cramps can sustain multiple days in a row, as well as severity being equal to that of a heart attack or a burst appendix.
Difference 3 - Aftermath. Someone who sustains a leg injury will find it difficult to walk for days, maybe weeks, even after the injury is fully healed. People who suffer from severe period cramps can feel extreme discomfort before and after, lasting maybe days. Personally, I get cramps 2 or 3 days before my period starts, and even then, I have aches during the first few days. In short, it sucks. Whereas getting kicked in the sensitive parts gives maybe 5 minutes max of difficulty walking, and that’s if you’re a wimp who makes things overdramatic. (obviously disregarding anyone with physical conditions that could make it actually impactful)
In conclusion, I am not trying to say that people who menstruate should be given all the passes, simply because they get cramps. I am not trying to tell people that cramps are always brutal, life threatening symptoms of bleeding from one's vaginal orifice.
What I am trying to say is that simply because period cramps are something one person might not suffer from, doesn’t mean it’s not real. All of you young boys. Would you worry for someone if they said they had a throbbing headache? Would you help someone out if they said they pulled a muscle, even if you can’t see it?
Then why won’t you believe someone who says they are experiencing a scientifically proven painful biological function? Is it because they have different genitalia than yourself? Is it because you don’t have a clear understanding of it? And no, I am not a crazy man hating feminist. I am a young girl, who doesn’t get period cramps nearly as bad as the next person. I am a kid who wants women to be believed when they say that they are hurting. I want the next generation of kids to understand that because someone has a vagina instead of a penis, doesn’t mean that their issues are not relevant to you.
So kids, what did we learn today?
‘I may have been kicked in the balls, but I have never had sustained bleeding from a hole in between my legs. They are not the same, but they are both real, and valid things to happen’
Lets raise the next generation to not be assholes!
