Fic: Toes in the Sand
Swan Beauty for my darling @scarletclarinet. Â Itâs been ages since I wrote this verse but this scene popped into my head when I was plotting. Â Since it has been ages, a not to anyone reading: AU where Belle and Emma are foster kids who run from an abusive foster home and decide to go to Florida to escape the cold. Â Along the way they realize theyâre in love.
II
âDo you hear it Belle?â Â Theyâd managed a bus ride for the last fifty-three miles, thanks to Emmaâs acting talent and a story about a grandmother who had retired to Florida. Â After two and a half hours of ten different conversations happening at the same time it was hard to hear anything after first. Â Once the bus pulled away, leaving one last cloud of carbon monoxide in its wake, things quieted and a slow smile spread across Belleâs face.
âThe ocean.â Â They couldnât see it, not yet, but there was a faint noise coming from the other side of the highway.
âRace you.â Â Emma was off before Belle could shout out a word of caution. Â Her heart was pounding as she looked both ways, making sure no cars were coming. Â They couldnât come this far to lose each other to something so horrible as an accident. Â Thankfully the road was clear, no lights from either direction. Â Belle ran, the backpack sheâd carried for more than twelve hundred miles bouncing against her back.
âEven five year olds know to look both ways,â she scolded when she caught up. Â Emma had already kicked off her shoes and left them in a pile with her bag. Â The pile wasnât too far away, though; they had learned to keep their meager possessions close. Â Belle added her bag to the pile and took off her shoes. Â Since they had been riding and not walking sheâd left her socks in the bag. Â âThe sandâs still warm.â
âImagine how nice itâs going to feel tomorrow when the sun is up.â Â Emma reached for Belleâs hand, looking away from the water for a moment to the sun setting behind them. Â Every day theyâd slipped paper under their clothes to block the wind or ducked into a public restroom to hide from the snow theyâd fantasized about the warm sun of the beach.
âYou know what tomorrow is?â Â It wasnât easy, or very important, to track days when theyâd been just trying to find food and shelter. Â Belle had noticed a newspaper at the bus station, though.
âThe first day of the rest of our lives,â Emma said with a grin, squeezing Belleâs hand. Â âWeâre going to like it here, Bells, just you and me. Â Itâs going to be a lucky place.â
âClose enough. Â Itâs the new year.â Â A year ago sheâd been more alone than sheâd known it was possible to be, her dad gone, home sold, and her history a file in some social workerâs cabinet. Â And then sheâd met Emma and everything had changed. Â She was scared, still, about what would happen, how they would support themselves, what would happen if they were caught. Â But Emma was holding her hand and as long as they stayed together Belle knew she could survive anything.
âHappy new year, Belle.â Â With Emmaâs lips on hers Belle wasnât certain if the fireworks that exploded were real or in her head. Â She closed her eyes and kissed back.

Because I can't help myself: Mad Swan + Revolutionary War AU :)
1) Jefferson notices that something is off about Private Swan when he doesnât become woozy at the sight of blood from a gut wound like some of the younger recruits, he keeps an eye out after that. âą Emmaâs child birthing process was an entirely horrifying one and she barely survived it so blood doesnât bother her in the least.
2) Jefferson doesnât like the phrase âturncoatâ, he much prefers âamoral opportunistâ to describe what he does. Heâs a traveller, he just happens to traverse battle lines and pick up trifles like maps, and key intelligence. âą even he forgets exactly which side he works for sometimes, just that he has an endgame that never involved having to work out in the dark again.
3) Emma went to war purely out of spite, she doesnât have a sense of patriotic duty. She has no love for the British, or sympathizers but she only wants to really hurt the founder of the house thatâs taking âcare ofâ her little boy.
4) Jefferson loves to poke at Emma, teasing about the filth on her boots, her matted hair, and the hints of things about how âEthan will never find a respectable wife if he carries on this way.â âą She threw a snowball at him
5) Grace loves to tell Henry stories about the wonderful things her father did, what he does, and how much she misses him; Henry just wishes he had someone like that in his life, because Miss Regina may be kind sometimes but she isnât right.

Mad Swan. "That is one hell of a mess."
Henry had only just gotten out of the building when he pulled out his phone and made the call, only waiting a few moments before he heard the other end pick up.Â
âI need an adult, can you come get me please?â He asked, scuffing his shoes on the gravel outside as the crashing from upstairs persisted.Â
âIs everything okay, are you hurt? Whatâs wrong?â The necessary adult on the other end asked, voice cracked and sleepy but sharpening with concern.
âYeah, itâs fine. Mom and Grandpa are trying to assemble a bedroom set while Grandma is grading papers, and itâs getting kind of ridiculous. I canât get any homework done here.â Henry muttered, wincing as he heard what he was certain was the tinkling of broken glass.Â
âAlright, ten minutes, and do me a favor, let your mother know youâre heading out this time.â
âSure thing, iâll brave the flying wrenches and see if I can make it back down to meet you.â Grumbling, Henry hung up and hastily shoved his phone back into his pocket, making his way back upstairs to let his family know.
âMom? Grandpa? Hello?â He called, anxiously peeking through the doorway and tensing at the volleys of cursing and banging coming from the guest bedroom.Â
âStill here, kid!â Emma yelled, voice oddly muffled by what appeared to be nails between her lips, and a solid foot of oak headboard.
âIâm gonna go out for a bit to get some of my science homework done, is that okay? Itâs getting loud in here, and I donât want to get roped in.â He said honestly, ambling over to the doorway and staying just out of range.
He anxiously recalled the last time heâd been asked to help tackle furniture assembly as a bonding technique; they still hadnât spackled the hole in the bathroom wall.Â
âSure, just keep an eye on the time and call me if youâre- Why are you in my house?â Emma started, her statement ending in a snarl as Henry felt a presence behind him in the living room.
âYour Majesty, Princess Emma, iâm here to pick up your son. He and Grace are in study group together. Didnât he tell you?â Jefferson said, and Henry could hear the smile in his voice.Â
Jefferson had all the charm of a badly socialized zoo animal, according to Emma but Henry just thought that they were too similar sometimes for her to like him, or maybe that she liked him too much and didnât like that.
âHe told me he was leaving to study, not that he was being kidnapped. Leave. Now.â Emma groused, crawling ungracefully out from behind the head board her father was struggling slightly to hold steady.Â
At this moment, Henry understood a little more why Jefferson was behind him, and not beside him; Emma looked like sheâd throw something at the man and the air sizzled with the tension of a poorly managing magic user.
âAlright, come on kid. Grace is in the car, I wanted to see if youâd survived up here. This really is one hell of a mess youâve got going on.â Jefferson rested a steady hand on Henryâs shoulder and they were both grinning now even as Emma bore down on them.
âIâm all good, Mom, Grandpa, iâll be back by eight, and you can quiz me!â Henry piped up, backing toward the door as he now put Jefferson between himself and his mother.Â
As soon as Henry was out of the way, Jefferson gave a sweeping bow to a simmering Emma and dashed out the door just in time for the hiss and snap of purple lightning to see his coat tails over the threshold.Â
âAs always, Highness, itâs a pleasure to see you, and if youâd like to come up and get Henry yourself, you know where I live. Now, kid, letâs hit the books, I donât think the Laws of Thermodynamics teach themselves.â
Henry was laughing as they went down the stairs and only just caught the sound of his grandfatherâs laughter as the door slammed.Â

Itâs not only Annaâs love or Henryâs that can save us. They accept us for who we are, and thatâs important. But itâs not enough. Itâs on us, too. You have to love yourself, Emma.

Remembering is the worst curse. Two lives in your head, like me. / Two lives in our heads, cursed worse than ever. Two lives, forever at odds. Double the pain. Double the suffering. /Â That must have been part of Goldâs plan. My punishment in this world is that I know the truth, but Iâm powerless to do anything about it.Â
