Richie: Class Clown

This one is obvious but still

“Half my friends barely know who I am

And there’s none at fault but this own singing man”

Richie hides himself behind jokes deflecting away from uncomfortable topics. Even when everyone shared their biggest fear he lied, taking the easy option of “clown” as pennywise’s most used form, his friends don’t fully know him and he won’t let them.

“Don’t wanna hear that I’m trailer trash

It’s a heavy topic for crystal glass

Everything comes back around I still feel like the class clown”

Years later Richie becomes a comedian. He falls into the same habits hiding behind comedy while not only lying to himself but to his audience. He defaults to cishet bro comedy and sex jokes keeping himself safe in the only way he knows how

Beverly: Nausesous

“Too trusting and loving, depending, and kind

Behind every kiss is a jaw that could bite”

Beverly isn’t used to love or even friendships without a cost. Even when she first met the losers she feels the need to prove that she got something out of helping them (the cigarettes she took while Keene was distracted. She lets herself get trampled on out of habit, only feeling safe to fight back when she trusts the person at her back won’t turn on her.

“And maybe that’s why I feel safe with bad guys

Because when they hurt me

I won’t be surprised”

In adulthood the only relationship we are seen is with a man reflecting her father. Even the fight with him before she goes back to Derry reflects directly to her father. She is hurt, but she knows what to expect.

Stan: Connell

“Kissing your ghost was my own damn fucking fault”

Is it me if I don’t bring Stenbrough into this? In the moments before his passing Stan thought of Bill. He went back to the moment they agreed to come back, he knew he would never be able to bring himself to go back, but also would never be able to say no to Bill. In his last moments he remembers why.

“But deep in my bones I know pain is what I earned

And you remind me of how good it feels to hurt

Yeah, you remind me of how little I deserve”

In the first fight against Pennywise, Stan felt abandoned. As the viewer we know Pennywise controls the sewers and manipulated the circumstances that led to him getting separated, but Stan saw them as leaving him behind. That he was the sacrifice to find Georgie. He bleeds out in the water before he is found a part of him dying where he killed the last of it bleeding out in the water yet again in his adulthood.

Mike: Sunset Tower

“Don’t tell me

Spare me all the stories of how you’re moving on

Lying to myself when I say that’s what I want”

Mike is the only one who stayed behind. He stayed so that he could be the reminder, but because of that he lived with the memories everyone forgot.

“Part of me just wanted some proof

It’s hurting you in the way it’s hurting me too”

When the losers came back, it was clear they didn’t even fully remember what they were coming back for. He realizes just how much hurt they were spared from while he stayed behind. He jumpstarts Bill’s memories with the ritual desperate for someone to understand. To feel what he’s had to feel for almost three decades.

Ben: Eleven Eleven

“There’s wishbones and clovers and numbers from heaven

Shapes in the stars to invent our connection

As much as I act like I want to forget it

I still wish for you at 11:11”

Ben has always put himself second. He will disregard his own feelings and desires if he feels someone else will fit better or deserves it more. Despite this, he still lets himself dream. He longs for having what he wants even if he feels he does not deserve it and shares his love even if it is not required simply so Beverley knows that she is loved, something she so desperately wants.

Eddie: Care

“Now all that I want is just to move on

Life’s so much better now that we don’t speak”

I like to imagine Eddie as the first to move away (aside from Beverly), thus he is also the first to forget. As he forgot more and more I believe he probably saw his mothers words as true. He began to see the losers as a bunch of bad influences causing him to retreat back to the behaviors we see him come back to as an adult despite breaking out of a lot of them at the end of the summer as kids.

“And we felt like strangers in February

But there will be parts of me that are

Yours”

Stan: He's a natural. His first time skating he struggled for around five minutes and then all the sudden could skate as though he went every weekend, no one can explain it. Bill and him spend most of the time catching while they skate and matching each others pace. Bill will go check on someone if they fall while Stan pretends not to know them.

Richie: He's really good for some reason??? You'd think he'd be flailing around and falling constantly but he's the only one who can do those fancy turns (Where you put your feet in a triangle, idk man but I can't do it) and skate backwards (if you can skate backwards I hate you I can never figure it out). He likes showing off but in the process trips over children that fall while he's not looking.

Eddie: He can't skate and he's made about it. He is like a newborn deer on an icy road. He desperately grabs onto whatever loser is closest and refuses to leave the wall unless they let him hold onto them. Richie (and occasionally Stan while he skates by) keeps making fun of him and hallway through Eddie gets fed up and goes to sit out until Mike finally convinces him to try again and sticks with Eddie for the rest of the night.

Mike: He's not a pro but he's definitely not bad. He enjoys just slowly going around listening to the music the DJ plays. He's very careful of avoiding young children especially the ones who like to zip around the rink really fast (Honestly the children who are good skaters are more dangerous you don't see them coming and they're unpredictable. At least the kids struggling you can tell where they're trying to go) He's the first to notice if one of the Loser's is sitting out and always goes to sit with them even if it's just cause their feet or ankles are hurting.

Beverly: She likes to go fast. As soon as she's comfortable on her skates she is going around as fast as she can until she falls, knocks someone over, or is asked to slow down by a worker. She's also the first one to get bored and will inevitably drag someone with her to get food (most likely Eddie who was already sitting out and will complain about how gross the food is while proceeding to get probably the worst thing he could've gotten).

Stan: Being touched. There are very few exceptions where Stan is comfortable with touch and he is more comfortable with certain losers touching him over others. He is most comfortable with Bill least comfortable with Richie. (Full scale: Bill, Mike, Ben, Bev, Eddie, Richie) Richie calls it favoritism but its mostly on a scale of movement. Bill is very stable with Stan, making sure to limit his movements. Also he has been helping Stan become more comfortable with casual affection as Bill is very affectionate. Going along with the previous when Bill lays on him it is a comfort for both as Bill can hold onto him while Stan is on the outside able to push him off if needed rather than feeling surrounded. Ben and Mike are just very stable on their own. Beverly is in the middle, she can be still if needed but prefers not to. While Eddie and Richie on the other hand can’t sit still to save their lives and the sudden and relentless movements freak Stan out. When hugging someone his arms have to be the one on the outside, if they are on the inside he feels trapped.

Chewing Noises. He can’t stand any sort of chewing noises and has to stop eating if he can hear himself or someone else chewing. He immediately loses his appetite at the sound no matter if he is in the middle of eating or is about to eat. Saliva in general also grosses him out. For example if a dog drools on him or is excessively drooling in general he loses his appetite as well.

Eddie: Food textures. Eddie is not a picky eater taste wise but the texture could completely make or break it. He hates jello. He refuses to even touch it with his finger. Also he hates excessive oil. If he can feel the oil on his fingers after touching it, then it’s too much. (You know those frosting that leave a film on your tongue? Yeah I hate those and so does he). If he doesn’t like the texture of a food he will completely refuse to eat it.

Richie: Too tight or too loose shoes. He is constantly tying and untying his shoes as they are never perfect. Also it’s a nervous habit. He mostly despises too tight of shoes but fears if they aren’t tight they will fall off when he runs so he is always trying to find the balance between the two. This also applies to button ups. He always leaves them unbuttoned because he fiddles with the top button if it’s fully done up. On the occasion he has to dress nice he hates the top button. When it’s undone it feel too loose and rubs at his skin, but if it’s buttoned it feels like it’s choking him.

Beverly: Fabrics. She hates anything knitted, (Seriously knitted clothing and blankets feel horrible and I will die on this hill. I also can’t stand the feeling of jeans so I’m choosing to ignore her overalls). She exclusively wears faux denim as real denim makes her itch. She both hates and loves dresses. She hates them because of the objectification when she wears them but loves them because there is less fabric touching her and if it does it is very brief so as long as the top is comfortable she doesn’t have to worry about the bottom.

Ben: Tight clothing. He can’t stand the feeling of restriction tight clothes cause, especially on his legs. He hates the way pants tighten on his thighs when he bends his knees thus wears either very loose thin pants or shorts. (There’s this pair of pants I own that never tighten on my thighs no matter how I sit and I love them) He also cannot stand long socks, they squeeze his calfs too much. 

Mike: Smoke. Any bit of smoke makes him cough and along with that sometimes strong smells do too, like a really strong candle. He hates cities because of the amount of cigarette smoke and if he sees someone smoking he holds his breathe until they pass or he passes them. He cannot sit close to the fire and especially cannot sit in the direction the smoke is blowing.
