the "it's just a joke" defense being so common in response to criticizing a behavior or belief is like. so baffling to me. does the average person go around saying things they don't believe see some other people agree with them and others disagree with them and then conclude "we all actually believe the same thing and are just pretending to disagree with each other for fun" but then when I Specifically disagree with them they say "okay this person is clearly not in on the joke, unlike the other people I've been arguing with, so I need to explain to them that we're all just playing pretend so they don't need to criticize me"
