I do love how after getting that treatment from Shaw Erik immediately pulls out the same thing w Charles. The similarities in the scenes are so interesting to me.

Is it to show that Erik has become like Shaw in his quest for vengeance against humans + is too blind to see it until he hurts his dear friend?

Does this mean that Erik found Shaw's "offer" compelling on some level, so he thinks it will work with Charles?

And even that dreaded "we're brothers, you and I" is so interesting when you compare it with what Shaw says to Erik. Shaw calls Erik son, placing him in a subordinate position even when offering Erik the world. While Erik, even while cradling Charles in his arms, wants so desperately for them to be equals (Brothers)

And also - in that scene Shaw is cradling Erik's head (holding him by the scruff of his neck more like) after Erik is injured by Shaw's hand - but this was on purpose, and is a means of domination and control from Shaw - like someone holding the scruff of a dog

So, “Golden” is supposed to be the song to seal the Honmoon. It is objectively a very VERY difficult song to sing and sing well- the chorus has an A5 that is BELTED (for reference, that is just a half step below the high note at the end of “Think of Me” from Phantom, and THAT one is sung in head voice). Like, the first time (and also every subsequent time lol) I heard it, I was like that is INSANE.

It takes an INCREDIBLE feat of vocal control and prowess to belt those notes that high (and that quickly), and do so REPEATEDLY. I cannot overemphasize how difficult it is to sing it how it is sung. “Golden” is very difficult, very showy, very much what is expected of the group to produce (and they do! And do it well!).

But the song that ACTUALLY seals the Honmoon is “What it Sounds Like”, which is a lot lower and in a more comfortable range to sing. That scene is them with all of their trappings essentially gone, just the core of themselves and their friendship, and that is reflected in the ease and flow of that song. It starts off acapella, with a focus on harmonies, before building to encompass the crowd (and the crowd does vocalize part of “Golden” at some points, intertwining it with “What it Sounds Like” and bringing it all full circle).

They didn’t need to hide who they were behind ornate, elaborate songs that require almost superhuman control and technique to sing. They just needed each other- the affirmation of their love and their acceptance of themselves and each other, in all their facets.

Instead, he tried to reach out for any scrap of metal around them. 

It was the first thing he had learned, under Shaw’s tutelage. And even now, he found himself reaching out, like the tiny measure of control might bring him relief. 

When he had first stepped out of the submarine and into the new world that Shaw had created, legs shaking so hard he might collapse, he had not felt anything. He did not feel the scrapped graveyard of the beach, could not feel the burned carcass of their jet, and way out on the ocean, where he knew the ships would have been sunken into the depths of the ocean, he could not feel their rippling metal hulls. 

Shaw had explained, hours later, that the thick cloak of cold that the bombs had cast over the earth would have weakened the magnetic pull of the objects around them. The radiation would have taken care of the rest. Demagnetization, it had been theorized. A complete loss of control. 

AU where for whatever reason, (energy blast, Apocalypse 's super powers) Shaw gets revived after Apocalypse awakens.

Erik's family is murdered like in canon, Erik is left in the worst state imaginable.

But Charles and co get notice that Shaw has been revived, and that he's headed straight for Erik. They're freaking out, racing against time, trying to save Erik from what they think is a man hellbent on revenge.

Only Shaw doesn't want revenge. He wants Erik *back*.
