And so it begins!
I’ve been pretty MIA, but I’m excited to get back. I was accepted into grad school for this fall, beginning my master’s in conservation biology. Hoping to get some good material to doodle from in the next few weeks! Good stuff!

Phoradendron leucarpum is in the family Viscaceae. This species is known as the American mistletoe, and is a semi-parasite that infects many hardwood trees, including oaks and maples. The seed lays down an infection root called a haustoria that burrows under the host trees bark and invades the xylem and phloem. The mistletoe is then able to extract nutrients from the host tree and begin to grow. This species is capable of producing its own nutrients through photosynthesis, differentiating it from a obligate parasite, which can only extract nutrients from its host! Follow for more plant facts and photos!
Fun fact: Phoradendron spp. are considered aerial parasites that are dispersed by birds. After birds eat mistletoe fruits they begin to defecate, but due to the viscous nature of the berry's insides it gets stuck to the bird's bottom. So the bird has to wipe its tail feathers onto tree branches which is how the parasite begins its initial contact to the host tree. Hence its name, "mistletoe", derived from Old English mistiltan in Old derived from the Anglo-Saxon words mistel, meaning "dung", and tan, meaning "twig." Poop on a stick!
Let's just admit...plant scientists have awfully dirty minds :D Dat root apical meristem. All dem dividing cells.
Anytime there's a sacrifice in science I assume it involves a dooming volcano.
