Imām ibn Qudāmah said:
If a man saw a woman lying on his bed that he thought was his wife, when it was actually an unrelated woman, the man would not be sinful if he has sexual intercourse with her. Yet if he knew it was his wife lying on the bed and he thought her to be as another woman, he would be sinful for having sexual relations with her with this in mind. All of this is connected to the intents of the heart.
— Discipline: The path to Spiritual Growth, p. 16-17.
Muhammad Ibn Al-Munkadir said:
Adam stayed on earth for forty years in such a state that he did not laugh and neither did his tears stop flowing. Eve said to Adam: “We are desperate to hear the call of Angels, beseech our Lord so that He enables us to hear the call of Angels.” Adam replied: “Due to my actions, I am in a state of shame unto my Lord such that I am unable to raise even my head towards Him.”
— Kitab al Riqqa wal Buqa, p. 242.
Mālik ibn Dinār said:
“O bearers of the Qur'an! What has the Qur'an sown in your hearts? The Qur'an is a spring for the believer just as rain is spring for the earth. Thus, the rain falls from the sky onto the earth and reaches the fields due to which grain is harvested. And the stink of a foul place doesn't prevent its green growth. So O bearers of the Qur'an! What has the Qur'an sown in your hearts? Where are the companions of its verses and those who act according to it?”
— Imam Ahmad in his al Zuhd, 2/300-301.
Al Hasan al Basrī رحمه الله said:
“Allāh has made the proof for loving Him following the Sunnah of His Messenger ﷺ.”
— I’tiqād ahl al-Sunnah, vol 1, 70.

It is reported that Abū Hazim Salamah b. Dīnār – Allāh have mercy on him – was once asked:
“O Abū Hazim, do you not see how prices have risen?” He replied, “And what is the worry? Verily, he (Allāh) who provides for us during deflation is the one who will provide for us during inflation.”
— Hilyatu Al-ʾAwliyāʾ 3:239.
Imaam ibn al Qayyim:
With happiness comes sadness. Every house that once was filled with joy will be faced with examples and each one of you is a guest and his money is a loan; the guest will travel and the loan will be repaid.
— Al Fawaa’id, p. 248.
Al-Awza’i said:
A time will come in which the rarest thing of that era will be a good friend.
— Al-Hilyah no. 12995.
Imaam ibn al Qayyim رحمه الله:
People who have memorized the Qur'an should be known by the night when people are sleeping and he is awake, and by the morning when people are not fasting but he is, by his sadness when they are happy, by his crying when they are laughing, by his silence when they are slandering, and by his piety and humility when they are arrogant. He who has memorized the Qur'an should be tearful, sad, wise, patient, and calm, he should not be rude, inattentive, loud or cruel.
— Al Fawaa’id, p. 247.
"And it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you and that you like a thing which is bad for you. Allah knows but you do not know." [AI-Baqarah, 2:216].
Imaam ibn al Qayyim رحمه الله:
In this Qur'anic Verse, there are several judgments, meanings and benefits for the servant. If the servant knows that misfortune can produce a desirable thing, and that the desirable thing can produce a misfortune, he would not feel secure against the harm that can come from delight, and he would not lose hope of delight to come from harm, for he does not know the outcomes of things. Verily, it is Allah Who knows about that which the servant does not know, and in this context the following issues must be noted:
Nothing is more beneficial for him than abiding by the judgments of Allah, even if it is difficult for him at the beginning, because all its outcomes are good, delightful, and pleasurable. In the same way, nothing is more harmful for him than committing what is forbidden, even if he loves it. All its outcomes are pain, grief, evil and misfortune.
Furthermore, the mind bears little pain in comparison to the great pleasure and abundant good that it will experience, and likewise man is expected to avoid little in exchange for great rewards and preventing great pain and long term evil.
In this way, we can see that the perception of the ignorant does not go beyond the basics of life; his perception does not reach the goals but the intelligent person always keeps his eye on the goals behind his actions in life.
— Al Fawaa’id, p. 231-232.

Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله:
Grief, sorrow and distress only occur from two directions:
1) The desire for the worldly life and having a zeal for it.
2) And the shortening in the actions of obedience and piety.
— Uddah As-Sābirīn, p.227.
I loved Allāh with a (sincere) love. As a result, He made every calamity that has befallen me easy upon me. And He made me pleased in every affair in my life.
— Amir b. Abd-Qays in Hilyah Al-Awliyā 2/90.
There are two things that cut off the delights of the Dunyā for me:
1. Remembering death.
2. Remembering standing before Allāh.
— At Taymi in At-Tadhkirah bi Ahwāl Al-Mawtā wal-Ākhirah 125.
Abdullāh b. al-Mubārak:
How fast these days are in doing away with our lifespans, and how fast this year is in doing away with its months, and how fast this month is in doing away with its days.
— Al-ʿUmr was Al-Shayb article 25.
The truthful one awaits the relief [from hardship] and does not despair from the Mercy of Allāh.

The true man is the one who fears the death of his heart and not the death of his (physical) body.
— Imaam ibn al Qayyim in Madārij As-Sālikīn 2/248.
Good character is from faith. The more the person has good character, the more faith he has. And the lesser he has of good character the more deficient his faith is.
— Shaykh 'Abdur-Razzāq al-Badr in Sharh Mukhtasar Sahīh Muslim 17.
