"Knowledge is not that a person simply reads or freely reads, as some people say. This is not knowledge (this is not studying). Real knowledge is that the person takes it from the people of knowledge, and that they memorize, understand, and comprehend. This is the true (manner of) seeking of knowledge."
How many sisters are Suffering from Sadness? Feeling Down? Sad all the Time?
Shaikh ’Uthaimeen rahimahullah Explains the Solution!
“Indeed the Legislation orders us to keep away from everything which causes regret … Allaah سبحانه said:
“Secret counsels (conspiracies) are only from Satan, in order that he may cause grief to the believers. But he cannot harm them in the least, except as Allah permits.” [Mujaadilah 58:10]
And Allaah تعالى only told us this so that we keep away from it, it was not merely a piece of information telling us that the Devil wants to cause us grief, no, what is meant is that we keep away from everything which causes grief. And for this reason the Prophet ﷺ said, “When there are three people, two should not converse together to the exclusion of the third.” [Agreed upon]
So everything which brings about sadness in a person is forbidden …
The Prophet ﷺ ordered a person who saw a dream that he disliked to dry-spit to his left three times and seek Allaah’s Refuge from its evil and the evil of the Devil and to then turn to the other side [to sleep on] and not to tell anyone about it and to perform ablution and pray—all of this so that a person can drive away all of these things [grief etc.] …
And that is why the Companions said that we used to see dreams and become ill because of them, but when the Prophet of Allaah ﷺ told us this hadith … i.e., they relaxed and no worry remained.
So the Legislator wants us to avoid everything which brings about worry, grief, and sadness, and for this reason Allaah تعالى said:
“So whosoever intends to perform Hajj therein then he should not have sexual relations (with his wife), nor commit sin, nor dispute unjustly during the Hajj.” [Baqarah 2:197]
Because disputes make a person defend himself and his thoughts change for the sake of the argumentation, and he will became worried and it will distract him from worship.
The point is always keep in mind the fact that Allaah عزوجل wants you to be happy all the time, far from grief.
And in reality a person has three situations: a past situation, a present and a future one. A person forgets the past and the worry that it had because it and what it contained is over, if it was a calamity, then say:
“O Allaah, reward me for my affliction and give me something better than it in exchange for it,” [Muslim] and forget about it.
And for this reason He forbade wailing over the dead, why? Because it renews the grief and reminds one of it.
As for the future, its knowledge is with Allaah عزوجل, rely on Allaah and when issues come to you then seek their solution, but those things which the Legislator has ordered you to prepare for then prepare for them.
It is the present time which it is possible for you to deal with, try to keep away from everything that causes worry, grief and sadness so that you can always be relaxed and have an open breast, dedicating yourself to Allaah and worshipping Him and [dedicating yourself] to your worldly affairs and those connected to the Hereafter.
When you try this, you will relax.
As for tiring yourself over what has passed or worrying about the future in a manner the legislation has not allowed, then know that [if you do so] you will become exhausted and lose out on much good.”

“These limits and legal standards do not oppress women nor do they make her less than what she is; rather, if we reflect upon them, we find that they vindicate the woman and protect her extremely well.
These limits are in opposition to those who call for giving the woman what they consider complete freedom. Is unveiling herself and calling attention to herself by stamping her feet and exposing herself to the corruption and vileness of human devils freeing her? Is going to work and to toil by women, mixing with men outside the house, and abandoning her home and children freeing her? Is her leaving the house to join parliament and congress and the military and the police freeing her?
Rather, by Allaah this is true injustice and oppression for the woman. Allaah, the Possessor of Might and Majesty, knows best and is wisest and more merciful to her than her own self. He has guided to what vindicates, protects and dignifies her in this life and in the hereafter.”

In this Friday Khuṭbah, Abul-Abbās Mūsā Richardson highlights the amazing benefits found in a fascinating passage from Sūrat an-Nūr. We are reminded about the obligation of obedience to the Messenger of Allaah (ṣallAllaahu 'alayhi wa ṣallam) and how our level of sincere determination in that will shape our future by the Permission of Allaah. Recorded at al-Masjid al-Awwal in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (USA) on 17.10.1437.
“[…] Glorifies whosoever is in the Heavens and the Earth, and the birds with wings out-spread (in their flight); of each one He (Allaah) knows indeed his Ṣalāt and his exaltation, and Allaah is All-Aware of what they do.”
“[…] Drives the clouds gently, then joins them together, then makes them into a heap of layers, and you see the rain comes forth from between them. And He sends down from the sky hail (like) mountains, striking therewith whom He wills, averting it from whom He wills. The vivid flash of its (clouds) lightning nearly blinds the sight.”
“[…] Created every moving (living) creature from water; of them there are some that creep on their bellies, some that walk on two legs, and some that walk on four. Allaah creates what He wills. Verily! Allaah is Able to do all things.”
All praise is due to Allaah, the One who sent down:
“Clear Āyāt (verses, lessons, signs, revelations, guidelines that encompasses our entire lives, etc.). And Allaah Guides whom He wills to the Straight Path.” (see Sūrat an-Nūr, v. 41-46, Translated by Shaikh Taqī ud-Dīn al-Ḥilālī and Dr. Muḥammad Muḥsin Khān)
And (we supplicate to Allaah to) raise the rank and send peace upon the one sent as a Mercy to all the worlds, our Prophet Muḥammad, and (likewise) upon his Family and all of his Companions. As for what follows:
Brothers in Ēmān (faith), believers in Allaah! Allaahu Ta’āla, our Gracious and Majestic Lord, has warned us of attributes of hypocrisy in His Book, He has exposed the traits and characteristics of the hypocrites. We beg Him to keep us from being amongst them and to keep us distant from those traits and characteristics. We aspire to have knowledge of their traits and characteristics in order to be free of them, in order to be distant from them, and may Allaah Subḥānahu wa Ta’āla aid us in that.
Allaahu Ta’āla has exposed their (the hypocrites’) reality in a number of Passages. We look now to Sūrat an-Nūr, some amazing Verses wherein Allaahu Ta’āla not only exposes for us the reality of the hypocrites but He Guides us to His Mercy, He Guides us to Falāḥ (فَلاَح), to true success. He Guides us away from these traits and He Guides us even in these Verses to that which will enable us to gain authority in the land, that which will earn us political power, social status and rank among the nations — it is all found in this Passage for those who look to the Book of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, for what will uplift them in this life and the next Life. Allaahu Ta’āla says in Sūrat an-Nūr (v. 47):
“They (the hypocrites) say: ‘We have believed in Allaah and in the Messenger (Muḥammad), and we obey,’ then after that (claim) a party of them turn away thereafter, such are not believers.”
In fact they are hypocrites (not believers), those that claim one thing and then violate their claims. Obedience to the Messenger (ṣallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa ṣallam) along with belief in Allaah and His Messenger is an attribute of those who enter Paradise. As said by His Messenger (ṣallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa ṣallam) in the Ḥadīth collected by al-Imām al-Bukhārī in his Ṣāhīḥ:
كل أمتي يدخلون الجنة إلا من أبى
“All of my nation of followers will enter Paradise, except for the one who refuses.”
They said, “Who will refuse, O Messenger of Allaah?”
The Messenger of Allaah (ṣallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa ṣallam) said, “Whoever obeys me, enters Paradise. And whoever disobeys me, he has refused (to enter Paradise).”
Allaahu Ta’āla says in the next few Verses (of Sūrāt an-Nūr v. 48-50):
And when they are called to Allaah (i.e. His Words, the Qur’ān) and His Messenger (Muḥammad), to judge between them: Lo! A party of them refuse (to come) and (they) turn away.
“But if the right is with them (in their favour), they come to him willingly with submission.”
When something is in their (the hypocrites’) favour, they come and say humbly and seemingly in submission, “We wish for the Judgement of Allaah and His Messenger (ṣallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa ṣallam).” Yet when they are not in the right (or something that has come not in their favour), they turn away and refuse the Judgement of Allaah and His Messenger (ṣallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa ṣallam). Allaah Subḥānahu wa Ta’āla then asks a rhetorical question that exposes their reality:
“Is there a disease in their hearts? Or do they doubt or fear lest Allaah and His Messenger (Muḥammad) should wrong them in Judgement. No, it is they themselves who are Ẓālimūn.”
Is there disease in their hearts or are they people of doubt? Both are true for the hypocrites, that they have a disease in their hearts and are doubters. Then Allaahu Ta’āla asks if they fear injustice from Allaah Subḥānahu wa Ta’āla and His Messenger (ṣallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa ṣallam). Do they fear being short-changed (having the short end of the stick) by Allaah and His Messenger? Instead, such people are themselves the oppressive ones.
Then Allaahu Ta’āla clarifies, in the next Verse (v. 51) what a true believer does when he is called to refer his matters back to Allaah and His Messenger (ṣallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa ṣallam) for Judgement:
“The only saying of the faithful believers, when they are called to Allaah and His Messenger (Muḥammad), to Judge between them, is that they say: ‘We hear and we obey.’ And such are the successful ons (who will live forever in Paradise).”
Allaahu Ta’āla continues describing these successful believers of sincerity and truth in their Religion, saying (v. 52):
“And whosoever obeys Allaah and His Messenger (Muḥammad), fears Allaah and keeps his duty (to Him), such are the successful ones.”
We beg Allaah, the All-Mighty, the One in whose Hand is our souls, that He makes us from those who are successful, those whom He has described in this Verse as being those whose statement is merely, “We hear and we obey.” In that, when we are called to Allaah and His Messenger (ṣallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa ṣallam), that is our success, that is our status with Allaah and our status even in this life.
We look around and we see the Muslims in positions of weakness; we see them in their lands being humiliated, we see them being disgraced and under the power and authority of oppressive non-Muslim people here and there, all over the face of the Earth, and the Muslim’s heart trembles, the Muslim’s heart is hurt by the situation of the Muslims.
Yet how many times have these hearts that wished for good for the Ummah that they turn to methodologies that are not based on the Book of Allaah, but in fact contradictory to the Book of Allaah, and they pay no heed to the Guidance of Allaahu Ta’āla that He has sent down, the Guidelines that He has given for us to attain personal honour, community honour, dignity, status, social recognition and authority in the land — it all remains in front of us with these Verses that we read.
We have no need for invented methodologies, borrowed methodologies from disbelievers, those who do not know themselves how to establish political change without harm and bloodshed. We look to them for guidance, but the Book of Allaah is right in front of us? The Guidelines sent down as Revelation to us, to give us authority, to aid our position, to give us stability, to give us strength, confidence, and the ability to practice our Religion — we neglect this and we look to the disbelievers and their political systems?! We look to them and their methodologies, their ways of “correcting affairs,” and we leave the Book of Allaah behind us?
May Allaah Subḥānahu wa Ta’āla protect us from such affairs.
(End of first Khuṭbah/Start of second Khuṭbah)
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Ever Merciful.
All praise is due to Allaah, the Lord, Creator and Sustainer of all things. And may Allaah raise the rank of and grant peace to the most noble of all of His Prophets, our Prophet Muḥammad, and likewise his Family and all of his Companions in entirety. As for what follows:
Brothers in Ēmān! I invite you to reflect over what Allaahu Ta’āla has exposed further of the signs and characteristics of the hypocrites, and then what Allaahu Ta’āla leads us to in order to attain political greatness, social status, recognition and authority in the lands. It is in front of us, inshā Allaahu Ta’āla, look to the Words of our Lord, the Mighty and Majestic. Allaah Subḥānahu wa Ta’āla continues (Sūrat an-Nūr, v. 53):
“They (the hypocrites) swear by Allaah their strongest oaths, that if only you would order them, they would leave (their homes for fighting in Allaah’s Cause). Say: ‘Do not take oaths; (this) obedience (of yours) is known (to be false). Verily, Allaah knows well what you do.’"
The hypocrites are those who screen and hide themselves behind lying, false oaths made in the name of Allaah, using devices of emphasis in their language that they would surely do something (such as what is mentioned in Verse) if they are asked, so Allaah tells His Prophet (ṣallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa ṣallam) to tell them: “Do not take oaths. There is no need for oaths here. It is simple, every day, ordinary well-known obedience, so just obey the Messenger (ṣallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa ṣallam). Verily, Allaah is All-Acquainted with all that you do, inwardly and outwardly.” Allaahu Ta’āla is Aware of the hypocrites in their open actions and their inner realities. May Allaahu Ta’āla give us pure outward actions and pure inner intentions, and free us from hypocrisy. Allaahu Ta’āla says (v. 54):
“Say (O Muḥammad): ‘Obey Allaah and obey the Messenger. […]’
This is the Dīn of al-Islām, this is the Religion of al-Islām, that of obedience to Allaah and His Messenger (ṣallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa ṣallam), as we had heard of so many times the order to obey Allaah and to obey His Messenger, with compliance and submission to the Guidance of the Revelation of our Creator. It is a no-brainer, as a methodology for the Muslim.
‘[…] But if you turn away, he (Muḥammad) is only responsible for the duty placed on him and you for that placed on you. If you obey him, you shall be on the Right Guidance. The Messenger’s duty is only to convey in a clear way.’”
“If you obey him,” another reminder from our Lord to obey the Messenger (ṣallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa ṣallam). If we obey him, not only previously will we be Guided but we will be successful and victorious people.
There is not an order of his that we fulfil and that it would lead us to harm, disobedience or deviation. All of his instructions, all of his orders and all of his Guidance is khair (خَيِّر), is good, is advantageous for the servants of Allaahu Ta’āla in every way, and there is nothing upon the Messenger except for clearly conveying the Message.
Allaah Subḥānahu wa Ta’āla says, what is for us to look at very carefully here today for those who aspire to gain authority in the lands, for those who are hurt and sad about the situations of many Muslims in their countries and us here in America, for those who are saddened and hurt by the weakness and humiliation that the Muslims face worldwide, Allaahu Ta’āla prescribes for us a solution (v. 55):
“Allaah has Promised those among you who believe and do righteous good deeds, that He will certainly grant them succession to (the present rulers) in the Earth, as He granted it to those before them. […]”
Allaah Promises with a promise only for the believers, for those who believe and only say “We have heard and we have obeyed,” as we have heard in the Verses before, and for those who do righteous deeds, Allaah will surely give them authority in the land, much like He gave authority to those who came before them (of earlier nations).
Who came before us, O Brothers in Ēmān? Mūsā (’alayhiṣ-ṣalām) and his people came before us. Moses and the slaves for Fir’awn, Banī Isrā’īl, enslaved for decades under the tyranny of a powerful, merciless ruler. The people would look and say, “How will we ever escape this tyranny? He has the military power, he has the political power, he has everything, and we have nothing. We cannot even gain strength because he keeps killing our sons at birth! He leaves our women, but he kills our sons.” They looked around and they found no way to gain authority. The only way Allaahu Ta’āla delivered them (out) from this was when they followed their Messenger, Mūsā (’alayhiṣ-ṣalām). When they followed Mūsā and had hope for there being Salvation in following their Messenger, then Allaahu Ta’āla took this Jabbār (جبار), this terrible tyrant, this merciless person killing their children viewed as being more powerful than anyone on Earth, feared everywhere — Allaahu Ta’āla did away with him (Fir’awn) with drops of water in his lungs. Drowned by water! Allaah Subḥānahu wa Ta’āla showed the people his (Fir’awn’s) power and his prominence, for them to see and think that this man is great, but Allaah is Akbar (اكبر), Greater, and that Allaahu Ta’āla is in charge of everything.
So these great leaders and these great tyrants of great, powerful status were brought down and destroyed, some of them by wind, some by water (like Fir’awn). Entire nations were destroyed by wind and water, because Allaahu Ta’āla wants you to look at these tyrants and all of their weaponry, their military strength, and then see how they are done away with things that you would never even consider using as a weapon. You would never even consider combatting anyone with wind and water, yet Allaahu Ta’āla destroyed them with these light, simple, insignificant things that we pay no attention to.
Allaahu Ta’āla Promises us authority in the land, but it is for the believers who do righteous deeds, not for those who disobey Allaah or His Messenger (ṣallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa ṣallam). Our Ummah is bleeding. Our Ummah is in pain. Our nation, the Muslims all over the world, are suffering, not because of the kuffār (كُفَّار), not because of the disbelievers, but because of our own opposition to the Revelation sent down by Allaah Subḥānahu wa Ta’āla, because our formula that is spelled out for us is that Allaah Promises us to give us prominence and authority in the land as He gave it to those before us. Allaah Promises this for us, and He continues with this Promise:
“And He will surely give them in exchange a safe security after their fear (provided) they (believers).
This is a Promise from Allaah. What is it is upon us to fulfil the conditions in order to deserve the Promise that is being fulfilled within us. The first two conditions have been mentioned: Faith and righteous deeds; that faith which includes what is necessarily part of it, obedience to the Messenger of Allaah (ṣallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa ṣallam). Allaahu Ta’āla, after describing what He Promises, He says:
يَعْبُدُونَنِي لَا يُشْرِكُونَ بِي شَيْئًا
“[…] They worship Me and do not associate anything (in worship) with Me.”
You find in the lands of the Muslims: Grave-worshippers. You find in the lands of the Muslims: those that when hardships befall them, they raise their hands and they do not say, “O Jabbār, O Ghaffār, O Allaah (يا جبار يا غفار يا الله).” Rather, they say “O Baḍawī (يا بدوي), O so-and-so,” and they call upon dead, deceased people who they believe to be “saints” who will intercede with them for Allaah. Falsehood! Those who they call upon besides Allaah cannot create even a fly, and Glorified is Allaah from all that they ascribe to Him! They turn to other than Allaahu Ta’āla with their requests and upon them is to turn to Allaahu Ta’āla alone, and if they do so they will receive the Promise that He has made in His Book and He will not hold back from delivering His Promise at all.
“And perform Aṣ-Ṣalāt (establish the prayer), and give aẓ-Ẓakāt and obey the Messenger (Muḥammad) in hopes that you may attain Mercy (from Allaah).”
Connected to all of these meanings, one more time Allaahu Ta’āla reminds us to obey the Messenger, with one more advantage, benefit and reward for those who fulfil Allaah’s Order: In hopes that you may attain Mercy. Meaning, that Allaah Subḥānahu wa Ta’āla would have Mercy on you.
We beg Allaahu Ta’āla for His Mercy, we ask Him to make us of those who receive His Mercy in this life and in the next Life. We beg Him to not make us of those who are deprived of His Mercy in this life nor in the Hereafter. And may Allaah raise and send peace upon our Prophet, Muḥammad, and (likewise) upon his Family and all of his Companions.

The Effect of the Knowledge & Guidance the Messenger of Allaah came with – Shaykh Rabee
By Shaykh Rabee’ bin Haadee al-Madkhalee
Taken from Mudhakkirah al-Hadeeth an-Nabawee
Abu Moosaa al-Ash’aree (radee Allaahu `anhu) reported that the Prophet (sall-Allaahu `alayhi wa sallam) said:
“The example of the guidance and knowledge that Allaah sent me with is like the example of abundant rain that fell upon the earth, some of which was fertile soil that absorbed the water and brought forth vegetation and grass in abundance; and some of which was hard earth that held the water, and Allaah benefited the people through it. So they drank from it, let their animals drink from it and used it for cultivation. And some of the rain fell upon another portion of the land that was barren and it neither held the water nor brought forth vegetation.
The first is the example of the person that comprehends Allaah’s Religion and benefits (from the knowledge) that Allaah sent me with, so he learns and then teaches others.
The last example is that of a person who does not care for it and does not accept the guidance of Allaah that I was sent with.”
(Reported by Al-Bukhaaree [1], Muslim [2] and Ahmad [3])
Narrator of the Hadeeth: He is Abu Moosaa al-Ash’aree, `Abdullaah bin Qais bin Saleem bin Hidaar, the well-known Companion. He migrated to Makkah, then to Abyssinia, then to Madeenah. The Messenger of Allaah put him in charge of one district of Yemen. He was courageous, a scholar and a doer of good deeds. `Umar bin Al-Khattaab appointed him as governor over Koofah and Basrah. He conquered Ahwaaz, Asbahaan and a number of other lands. He died in 50H.
Vocabulary in the Hadeeth:
Mathal: (Example) what is meant by it here is an amazing resemblance not a proverbial statement.
Hudaa: (Guidance) means that which leads one to what is being sought
Ghaith Katheer: abundant rain
Naqiyyah: (fertile) means pure and fresh as occurs in another narration of the hadeeth
Kala’: (vegetation) is applicable to both wet and dry vegetation
`ushb: (grass) refers to fresh produce
Ajaadib: (hard earth) is the plural of jadab and it means the land that is solid and which doesn’t absorb water
Qi’aan: (barren land) is the plural of qaa’, which means a straight and smooth plain (land) that doesn’t produce vegetation.
An Explanation of this Parable:
The Prophet (sall-Allaahu `alayhi wa sallam) put forth an example likening what he came with from the Religion to the common rain, which comes to the people in the circumstance when they need it. Such was the circumstance with the people before the Prophet’s advent. So just as Allaah brings life to the dead earth through rain water, then such is the case with Allaah’s revelation, with which He brings life to the dead hearts.
Allaah says: “Is he who was dead and We gave him life and set for him a light whereby he can walk amongst men – like he who is in the darkness from which he can never come out?” [Soorah Al-An’aam: 122]
The light here refers to the light of revelation and the darkness refers to the darkness of ignorance, disbelief and misguidance.
Then the Prophet (sall-Allaahu `alayhi wa sallam) likened those who hear what (guidance) he came with to the various type of earth, which rain falls upon.
1. So from among them is the scholar and doer of deeds, who teaches others. He bears the status of fresh earth that intakes the water and benefits itself with it and then produces vegetation thereby benefiting others.
2. And from among them is the one who gathers knowledge and strives to attain it, but doesn’t act upon its requirements or he doesn’t understand what he has gathered. However, he passes it on to others. So he bears the status of the earth upon which water settles, and which the people benefit from by using.
This type of person was indicated by the Prophet (sall-Allaahu `alayhi wa sallam) in his saying: “May Allaah brighten (the face) of a man that hears a statement from me, retains it in memory and then passes it on just as he heard it.” [4]
3. And from among them is he who hears the knowledge but doesn’t preserve it or act upon it or pass it along to others. So it bears the status of the smooth barren land that neither intakes water nor passes it onto others.
He (sall-Allaahu `alayhi wa sallam) only joined the first two praiseworthy groups in this parable due to their sharing in giving off benefit. And he singled out the third condemned group due to there being no benefit in it.
So take hold of the prophetic knowledge my brother and act upon it, Allaah will raise you due to it.
Allaah says: “Allaah will raise those who believe amongst you and those who have been given knowledge many levels.” [Soorah Al-Mujaadilah: 11]
And Allaah says: “Say: Are those who have knowledge equal to those who do not have knowledge?” [Soorah Az-Zumar: 9]
And stick to acting upon it and calling to it, as Allaah says: “And who is better in speech than the one who calls to Allaah and does righteous deeds and says: Indeed I am among the Muslims.” [Soorah Fussilat: 33]
And yearn to be from the first category, from those who accept this light (knowledge) that the Prophet Muhammad (sall-Allaahu `alayhi wa sallam) brought, for Allaah will put light into your heart due to it and bring life to it. The correct and good livelihood cannot come to be except with it (i.e. this knowledge).
And beware of being from the third category, from those who do not accept the guidance of Allaah nor have any concern for it.
Benefits from the Hadeeth:
1. The magnificence of the guidance and knowledge that the Prophet (sall-Allaahu `alayhi wa sallam) came with, which is the Qur’aan and the Sunnah and their effect in the lives of people.
2. People are in various levels with respect to their willingness to either accept or reject what the Messenger came with. People have different natures.
3. The virtue of knowledge, teaching and spreading good to the people.
4. The danger of turning away from what the Messenger of Allaah (sall-Allaahu `alayhi wa sallam) came with from the Book and the Sunnah from one aspect. This turning away (from knowledge) indicates the malicious natures of these opposers and their low status in the sight of Allaah.
Footnotes:
[1] Book of Knowledge: Chapter on the Virtue of the one who learns and teaches (no. 79)
“Indeed the path that reaches to Allah is one. And it is whatever He sent His Messengers with, and revealed His Books with. No one can reach Him except by this way. And if the people came from every other way and opend up every single door, the paths would [turn out to] be closed upon them, and the doors would be locked, except this way, for it is connected to Allaah, and [makes on] reach Allah.
— ● Ibn al-Qayyim | (at-Tafseer ul-Qayyim, p.14-15).
‘I entered Makkah and I saw the gathering of Hamid Faqeeh. I saw that he was strong in Salafi Tawheed, so I sat there until the Adhan of Isha. Then when I was alone with him I asked him: ‘O Shaykh how did you learn Tawheed?’
He said: your question is excellent.’
Then he narrated the famous story to me.’
Shaykh Hamad al-Ansaari also said:
‘I met with Shaykh Hamid Faqeeh once and I said to him: Salafiyoon are a rarity in Egypt, and you are a Salafi, so how did Salafeeyah come to you?’
He said: ‘I had graduated from the university of Cairo or Azhar, and while I was travelling back to my village carrying my university certificate I passed by a farm and I saw an old Shaykh sitting there and I gave him Salam, so he said to me what is that in your hands?’
I said: ‘A graduation certificate.’
Next to the Shaykh was the book ‘Kitab al-Tawheed’ with its explanation of ‘Fath al-Majeed’ the Shaykh stood up and walked off to take care of something and he was away for sometime. I picked up the book to read, then later on the Shaykh returned, I asked him about this book, and I told him that I was amazed by it. He began explaining the ‘Aqeedah of the Salaf to me. He said: ‘O my son it is upon you to spread Tawheed and the ‘Aqeedah of the Salaf, because indeed you did not learn that in the university from where you graduated.’
So from then on I began calling to the ‘Aqeedah of the Salaf, and this Shaykh was a farmer in that farm.’

We laugh and yet – who knows? – perhaps Allah has looked at some of our works and said:
“I will not accept anything from you.” Woe to you, son of Adam!
Can you fight Allah?
Whoever disobeys Allah is fighting Him. By Allah! I have met seventy veterans of Badr. Most of their garments were wool.
Had you seen them you would have said they are crazy, and had they seen the best among you they would have said: “Those people will have no part in the Hereafter.”
Had they seen the worst among you they would have said:
“Those people do not believe in the Day of Reckoning.”
I have seen people for whom this world was cheaper than the dust under their feet.
I have seen people the like of whom would come home at night, not finding more than his own portion of food, and yet say:
“I shall not put all of this into my belly.
I shall certainly give some away for Allah’s sake.”
Then he would give away some of his food in charity, even if he were more in need of it than its recipient.
