My wish is to see Mamiina again

It made me think of how in Simoun the immediate context of Mamiina’s death was jarring and infuriating but the way the narrative developed after it made it more meaningful, except in that case that exact effect was clearly intentional whereas in this case, uh……………………………….not so much. Mamiina also died for reasons that related to, you know, her own character arc, as opposed to LITERALLY NOBODY’S.

She sighed, eyes watching the sky outside. As far as she knew, the other Sibyllae were busy on their own. She had been unable to find anything that might keep her relatively occupied, and so had retreated to the paths leading away from the maaju pool. She’d found a bench amongst the secluded shrubbery and taken refuge.

Here she could enjoy the peace and quiet. Things had not been quite the same ever since three weeks ago, and it had seemed to disrupt the camaraderie shared in her Chor. New recruits had arrived, and seemed to be adjusting well. She’d not taken the chance to get to know them well enough to give any further judgment. She should soon though. Perhaps if she spoke to them and got to know them, they wouldn’t consider her so special.

Yes, her family was wealthy and well-off. Many generations before her had spent their pre-adult years as cadets, and later, Sibyllae, before venturing to the Spring to select a chosen gender. It had always been expected of her to do the same, not that she would have given protest. She had grown up watching the ceremonies, and yearned to complete Ri Maajons that were just as beautiful as the Sibyllae who had come before her. Of course, that had been before the war, when times were more peaceful and Ri Maajons were never used to harm others.
