“ICE NOT WELCOME” signs are great for solidarity and breaking morale, but please make and help pass out signs stating a home or business is private property. Make sure your business has an area explicitly for employees only. What we’ve seen in the last week makes all this seem like sticking a post-it on a viper and none of us know where we’re headed now, but it’s easy to do and could make a difference. It’s made a difference here.

Make sure your local schools have a plan in place. Distance learning will need to be a reality for some school employees and students. Push for it.

Schools are also great distribution centers for food and supplies like period products, toilet paper, etc. and they should begin gathering supplies ASAP.

Build relationships before ICE comes to town. If you know you will be sheltering in place, figure out who you can trust to help you. Their tactics are growing increasingly shady; here, they are distributing flyers promising free food to lure families.

Know what food to donate. Here in Minnesota we have a lot of white families of Scandinavian descent who do not think of things like fish sauce, bamboo shoots, tortilla flour, etc. as "staple foods." Get lists of culturally relevant staple foods to make sure people have what they need, not food they've never cooked with.

If things happen like they have happened here, any detainees who get released will be released WITHOUT their personal effects. Phones, jewelry, winter coats, etc. are regularly stolen from detainees. They get kicked out of Whipple in the Minnesota winter in totally inappropriate clothing with no way to contact anyone. You will need to organize an effort to bring detainees home-- literally sit outside the detention center in a car and wait for people to walk out. If you can partner with a nearby restaurant to provide meals, they are often hungry. Other needs include prepaid cell phones and weather-appropriate clothing for detainees and gas money (we do it here in the form of gift cards to gas stations) for volunteer drivers.

Medical care is a necessity. Find safe doctors who are willing to make house calls, or smaller local clinics committed to providing safe care, and get their name out to those who will be sheltering in place. It's obvious that big health problems can't be solved in this way, but a doctor examining a child sick with flu and teaching her parents a care regimen for her is the type of thing that is important but neglected at this time and can be solved in this way. Additionally, if someone is willing to leave their house for care, it is important to have folks with them.
