For our last research post I decided to look into Karl Wirsum who was an artist in this weekâs presentation. He was born in 1939 and raised in South Chicago. He was inspired by flea markets and musicians he grew up around for his paintings. Wirsum was a part of the Hairy Who group thatâs a Chicago art group. He uses bright colors and patterns in his work. I enjoy his work because of how graphic it is the way he uses lines and color flaty.

For this weekâs painting I decided to paint characters from the video game Animal Crossing. Animal Crossing New Horizons is a new game that came out in March of this year just when quarantine was beginning. This game really helped me get through quarantine by having something to look forward to and a way to connect with my friends. It really helped being able to escape into a virtual world where things were simple as the pandemic was spiraling. For my painting I painted three characters that are my favorites. I had a bit of trouble with it the beginning and had to scratch off all the paint to start over. Getting the very small details was really difficult so I used posca markers for details like their face features and the details on their clothes. All I have left to do is the background which I plan to paint it a mint green with a leaf pattern that is from the game.
Sketch for our glass painting. Can anyone recognize who this is?
In the second pic I am trying to map out some colors digitally. I do not know what color to make her hair or shirt, any suggestions?
Im really excited to see where this going to go! I think for the hair and shirt maybe you can reuse some of the colors from the skin maybe the red or pink.
Abstract con Discordant
4 layers of gesso, 2 coats of my base paint, and 2 sets of discordant colours LATER..
Also, I really appreciated everyoneâs input on my collage options. But after seeing the instructions for the painting, I switched up Option 4 and combining it with the flow of Option 1-3. Option 4 didnât have a lot of touching pieces, whereas Option 1-3 almost everything was connected. I noticed this after Professor picked 1-3 over 4. This is what I decided on. I even assigned the pieces to colours already.
Nice I like that you put your paints in little containers, one mistake I do all the time is that I make too little and then I have to try to make the same tint of the color again. Most of the time I am slightly off and it bothers me so I cover the whole thing lol.Â
I really like the composition you are going with! Also I canât wait to see how the green and pink colors create the discordant effect in your painting.

I think that the effects that discord colors have on a painting are it creates a tension that makes your eye more drawn to it. Discord colors since they are so close in tone but are different colors sort of makes your eye confused which makes you want to look at the painting more to figure out what is going on. It creates almost like a hypnotizing effect on the viewer.
For this weekâs painting I stuck to darker colors for the discord. I made the squares red and green since they are complementary colors then I made the background color a blueish purple. I thought the purple could help add to the discord of the red and green. I found mixing the paint and getting the colors correct really enjoyable. I think the hardest part of this painting was the masking since it is very tedious and has to be done correctly first before I could start painting.
This is My collage.Â
I was cutting a bunch of random shapes and at the end I ended up deciding in these. What do you think. My boyfriend likes the yellow one because he thinks it looks like a bird haha. I did not even mean to do that lol
I really enjot this collage and how you have big shapes as well geometric and organic shapes. One suggestion i have is to have the diagonal rectangle to bleed off the edge so have it fill up those corners too. I enjoy the simplicity of your collage. I donât think you should add anymore shapes or it will feel very busy and make the composite feel imbalanced.
I think for the discord excercise I got the colorsâ tones really close to one another. For the first red and green one I didnât have to add white or make it darker. For the middle one I did analogous colors green and blue which I had to add a tint to. The last pair i worked with red and green again but wanted the discord pair to be darker. So i added some red go to the green and some green to the red.

I made yâall a demonstration on how to mix discords - this is video 1!
For my painting I wanted to work with squares and rectangles as well we just two colors. I played around with laying the shapes on top of each other and tried some comps where none of the shapes are touching. My favorite composition out of the 5 is my 4th one.
For this week I decided to research the painter Bridget Riley. She is an English artist who was born in 1931. Her painting consists of optical illusions which I found to be very interesting and captivating to look at. Her work is abstract and has a focus on shape as well as color.

This is Charlotte Hallberg. I picked to talk about her because her circles are kind of hypnotizing. I could not believe these are oil paints. Like literally how does one put these colors together. Her website does not have much information on it but I see she will have an exhibition in New York http://www.charlottehallberg.com/news
I also found interesting in one of her interviews she replied to a question about her paintings by saying this â I consider aggressing the eye optically, a form of transgressive narrative.â These I think are perfect words for what I am seeing. The colors contrast and pop into our eye and makes us feel things. Each circle gives a different sensation.Â
This is her website btw http://www.charlottehallberg.com/
This is so interesting!
Here is the progress of my painting. I just need to do some shading and add the light dots to it. For the painting excercises I enjoyed doing them it was cool to see how colors can affect how you perceive them.
