their paths don't cross very often, but when they do, it certainly leaves a lasting impression. greeting the courier as they arrive, it only takes him a second to recognise who it was. the way he walked, the distinctive voice, the disarming smile. he helps set the cases onto the belt and thinks that's the last he'll see of him until morning, turning to walk back to his post when a hand catches his arm, the other gripping at his jaw to get his attention.

it catches him so off guard that all he can do is dumbly stare at him for a solid second, blinking in surprise. it seems he'd missed some hidden hint within the statement to join him below and that mistake was being clarified now. he really shouldn't leave his post. not that it was particularly exciting, with couriers staggering in at odd times of the day. some days it'd be hours between one leaving and another arriving. it is tempting, though ...

turning up on his doorstep unannounced wasn't entirely uncommon when it came to helena, but this was one of the few times he hadn't wanted her company. sure, staying away from the dso office for a week was likely unusual of him and maybe she felt like he was putting more work on her, but he had his reasons and managed to convince higher ups to let him work from home for recovery, making it seem like he'd fared worse than he actually had.

a bullshit lie. maybe she'd sniffed that out when she stepped in and gave him a look that saw through his reasoning for not being at work. though, it was probably on him for holding himself in a way that never fully faced her, keeping his head down and to the side, busying himself with reasons to put distance between them. and it had worked, for a short time. it was only a matter of time until she got to the bottom of his weird behaviour.

cornered in the kitchen whilst trying to make her coffee, he knew there was no making her leave now. backed up against the counter, the grip on his jaw not only brought his attention to her, but slightly tilted his head up too, revealing the start of the infection in his body. blackened veins spidering up from beneath the collar of his shirt, the poison of raccoon city not only infecting his dreams but now his waking hours. fool on him for thinking he could ever escape it.
