It wasn’t so much the strength in her shoulders as it was the tire in her eyes that called my mind’s eye.

She was sat, after what I assume was a day’s worth of hawking, under this balmy Lagos sun, tray to the side, one elbow in reverse akimbo to rest her tired frame.

I slowed in the building traffic, window down and asked as nicely as I could muster “can I snap you?” she agreed, and in a singular pose angled her very striking eyes towards me.

Eyes sat in the sea of black that was her face. Eyes contrasting every other feature. Half-forgiving, half-accusing. I pondered heavily on this Lady Hawker and what her life could be like. I wondered about her home and if she had little ones that drew hearty laughter from her throat. Mostly, I hoped she had made the day’s profit and had someone to call home.
