Snippet: βButβ¦what if it was a premonition?β Stan asks. βI mean, it is weird all that stuff happens, and then Kenny dies the same dayββ
Kyle scoffs. βThatβs stupid. Premonitions donβt exist.β βOh?β βThatβs just called pattern-seeking,β Kyle says, wiping his nose. βItβs your brain trying to make sense of nonsense. Ever heard of activation-synthesis or the continuity hypothesis?β
Stan nods at him.Β
Stan? Marsh? When isnβt Stan confused? Why do you think he just nods whenever you say anythingβ
Tch! βItβs confirmation bias. Everyone conveniently recalls the times theyβre right and never when theyβre wrong,β Kyle says, waving Cartmanβs words away.
βOhβ¦β Stan nods again, but continues after a pause. βBut what about when you saw Kenny in a coma? Or that necklace Cartman gave Kenny?β
βOh, rightβyeah, that?β Kyle takes a loose nail off the table. βForget it. I shouldnβt have pressured you into agreeing with me.β
βButβ¦β Stan says. βYouβre the smartest person in this town. If you say it happened, then I believe you.β
Kyle looks up into his earnest blue eyes. βReally?β
Stanβs entire body nods.Β
He hides a small smile in his palm, but it falls when he fixes on the nail Jenga forming in front of him. βIs this what everyone goes through when they turn 10 years old?β
Stan shrugs. βHope not. Itβd be the worst present ever.β
βUgh, tell me about it!β Kyle groans, placing another nail on the rising structure. βDo yourself a favor and skip your birthday.β
βCan I?β Stan groans, burying his head in his arms.Β
βHmmβ¦guess you canβt be 9 forever. Maybe you can skip straight to 11.β He playfully punches Stanβs shoulder with a grin.Β
Stan rests his cheek on his arm and looks down. βGrowing up sucks.β
βYeah, it really fucking does. Maybe we can just stay here forever.β Kyle pauses. βFuck, fat ass. He can go.β
Stan smiles. βYeah, fuck Cartman.β
Laughter and jokes fill the garage, melting the uneasiness between them. Everything weighing on Kyle slides off his shoulders as he basks in the warm light shining on him and his super best friend in the whole wide world. While laughing at one of Stanβs deadpan jokes, he glances at the clock on the wall. Itβs still 9:30 PM.Β
βStan?β Kyle asks.Β
βHmm?β
βWhat time is it?β He reaches for his pocket.Β
Crash!
Both boys jump, gawking at the broken clock. A huge gash runs across its face.
