open world game but there actually is a trajectory to follow, and everyone else knows what it is and gets prompts from the game about it while you wander around the open world
you eventually figure it out and start copying them, but you can’t seem to figure out how to progress to the goals that seem easy for everyone else. also, despite the open world, there are dozens of complex rules about what objects around you you’re allowed to interact with and how, how you appear, etc.
outside there is a bench, a curb, a grassy area in a park, and a narrow grassy area by a sidewalk. the game mechanic allows you to sit, stand, and lie on any of these at any time. here are the actual rules:
bench: may sit, but not lie down. frowned upon to use at night.
curb: frowned upon to sit. do NOT lay down. you may sit if a parade is going by.
grassy area in park: may sit or lay down, but only during daytime.
grassy area by sidewalk: frowned upon to sit, do not lay down.
if you violate these rules, you will be seen as Weird or mistaken for an Undesirable. whoa betide you if you are an Undesirable.

Do you remember the episode of Spongebob where he's training gary for the snail race and does a coach persona + calls gary a girl and has an aside where he's like "I called you a lady to demean you 🤓" and right after he says that it cuts to sandy and she somehow telepathically feels that Spongebob just did something misogynistic and us like I feel like I need to kick Spongebobs ass for some reason. And then she appears just at the end of the episode to kick his ass.

Or maybe he DID understand the assignment. Hmm.
I think it's very important we never *see* anybody abstract in the whole series. We always follow the other characters as they *find* someone who's already abstracted off-screen. The closest we get is Jax nearly abstracting in her bedroom but notably that instance is interrupted when Pomni knocks on her door.
Abstraction always happens in solitude. It happens when someone is isolated and beyond hope, and then one day, you check on them, only to find they're already gone. The thing that remains isn't them anymore.
The suicide metaphor is... pretty apparent when you realize that.
