suddenly remembered that pjotwt incident where show fans dogged on latinopercy's fanart of latino percy to "defend" walker and one of the comments said that the piece didn't feel like percy because he looked "too angry" and . [insert plethora of generational curses here] now it has me thinking about surreptitious fandom racism in how people seem to be receiving and interpreting show percy (a blond, blue-eyed pale kid) vs book percy (who's commonly depicted as a darker-skinned boy of color)
show percy being seen as the ideal percy because he fits the white vision of a beach boy, which he never was in the first place, instead of the considerably more alternative, rough-looking skater city boy he was in the books. the massive erasure of how teachers instantly distrust percy and never think he'll amount to anything because of how his disability others him; the lighthearted twist on percy's home situation so that we don't feel the total gravity of the situation that gabe puts both percy and sally in; the glossing over of how gabe and authority figures are easily able to label percy as a terrorist because he's a poor runaway kid, and percy is in turn severely traumatized by them (just look at his internal narration when he meets mr. d); show percy being to one to know and narrate everything about greek mythology instead of annabeth; show percy being first and foremost a lovable golden retriever goof and to-be-boyfriend; show fans wanting percy to be openly pursuant and communicative about his feelings with annabeth from the get-go, perceiving botl and tlo percy as an asshole for daring to be interested in other girls because it doesn't fit in with the golden retriever bf archetype they want him to be.
show percy is not tangibly othered in the way that book percy made us feel that he is and therefore carries no impact preceding from that; percy with none of the melancholy and the rage and the tragedy that haunts him from the first book because of his mother's death (because, remember, he knows from episode 2? 3? that sally is alive in the underworld). to the show and its fans, percy's coding in the books as a minority (even if unintentional on rick's part) is inconsequential to his character; and it seems they like him that way. otherwise, he's too angry, too complicated, too much of an asshole for the extremely stunted extent of their moral palette.
completely agree with all of this, and to add my two cents - book percy is angry! he hides it with his witty commentary and lighthearted narration, but that boy is angry all the time: he's angry at gabe, he's angry at the teachers who alienate him because of his learning disabilities, he's angry at the monsters who keep targeting him and his fellow demigods, he's angry at the gods and everything they have done (and also failed to do).
anger is also an important driving force and catalyst for many of percy's actions throughout the series. we see so many examples of this in TLT alone: at the very beginning of the book, he exposes himself to ms dodds - and thereby inadvertently kickstarting the events of the book - by drenching nancy bobofit in fountain water, because he is angry that she keeps bullying grover. he manages to defeat the minotaur due to his abilities being triggered by the rage (and grief) of losing his mother. anger at the gods makes him decide to post medusa's head to olympus, which establishes a pattern of rebellion and unwillingness to be controlled by the gods that forms one of the central themes of percy's character.
it's why he and luke work so well as narrative foils in the first series - just like luke, percy is angry at the gods and the terrible system that the demigods are embroiled in. just like luke, he wants change. the only difference is how they go about realising that change: luke, for all his desires to create a better world, cannot escape the cycle of violence and tragedy that he is born into, as he is both the victim and someone who becomes a perpetrator of such violence. in a sense, as many have said, he is the classical tragic greek hero. but percy is the one who breaks the cycle. he is the modern hero of the story, the one who truly begins to escape the cycle of violence and neglect, and introduces the hope that even the gods can, too, despite everything they have done (see his conversation with hermes at the end of TLO).
percy manages to do so not because of his anger - which is so similar to luke's - but rather in spite of it, which is why i feel his rage is so important to the story. taking it away means removing one of the things that makes percy well, percy. a percy jackson who isn't angry and whose background isn't steeped in being 'othered' (as kai accurately puts it), isn't really percy jackson at all. and in turn that can only be a detriment to the series and the themes that the original series conveys.
‘nico was treated so much worse by camp, everyone hated him-‘ yea but he got away. he left. he interacted with them like. what. 2, 3 times before choosing to stay at the end of hoo, where he was actually accepted by that point?
percy couldnt leave. he was stuck there, for 4 years, being hated on and looked down on by damn near every camper there. it took him winning a war for them to actually like him. camp half blood did not fucking care about him until after tlo
yes, chb didnt like or trust nico, but he had a lot less interactions with them compared to percy, who they also didnt like, and who was there for 4 years every summer + a winter break
there’s just something about thalia that despite wanting to do the right thing for olympus she would have destroyed it one way or another
”i’m probably doing it for attention” after not telling a living soul

The "bisexual Percy Jackson agenda" will never die for me, because this was such an unnecessary comment to add.
So funny to me (and by funny I mean it makes me mad with rage) that it wasn't enough for Rick to make Rachel the oracle and make so she's unable to have a relationships with Percy; he also had to make sure that she would be going to an all girls school and wouldn't be school mates with him any longer.
And then, he also made sure they wouldn't be close friends in the future. Bc you know. She was once upon a time one of his love interests. And god forbid there's any doubt regarding Percy's choice to be with Annabeth. God forbid this girl who was once important in his life continues to be a close friend after he gets with Annabeth. God forbid he even speaks of her in front of his girlfriend (who is also her friend!) without hesitance.
Btw he did the same thing with Nico, in the sense that he used to have a deeply important relationship with Percy in the first saga, but the moment Rick decided Nico used to have a crush on Percy (and I can assure you, he didn't have this in mind in the first saga) suddenly they couldn't be close anymore. God forbid Nico's process of falling out of love with Percy doesn't involve him diminishing Percy in any way in his head. God forbid Percy is someone Nico confides in, trusts deeply and who is a huge part of his support system.
Rick's unchecked fear of fans merely considering the idea of a ship other than the one he chose has ruined the writing of some amazing platonic friendships and I'll never forgive him for this

those days where your entire train of thought is just “I CAN’T FUCKING DO THIS I CAN’T DO THIS I’M NOT GONNA MAKE IT PLEASE HELP ME” and whole time ur just like. sitting at your desk completely fine
[ I stared across the meadow. There were groves of trees, a winding stream, acres of strawberries spread out under the blue sky. The valley was surrounded by rolling hills, and the tallest one, directly in front of us, was the one with the huge pine tree on top. Even that looked beautiful in the sunlight .
My mother was gone. The whole world should be black and cold. Nothing should look beautiful. ]
- Percy Jackson and the lightning thief
This part of the book is the reason why I despise the “Percy would destroy the world if his mom or Annabeth died” headcanon because here we see exactly what happens after Percy’s mom “dies” He hurts the person who hurt his mom, revenge over. he doesn’t blame anyone else, not Grover or Mr. Brunner, because Percy is too kind.
And even after everything, even when he thinks he has to live on the street or join the military, to escape his abusive stepdad. the world is still beautiful, even when he thinks it shouldn’t be.

thalia being like i can't be the hero of the prophecy it has to be percy i'm not the one ill stagnate my age because i can't be who it needs me to be
and percy being like ok cool but not really understanding the gravity of that or fully deciding he will be the hero until he sees nico and is like if it's not me it's this kid and he's gone through too much already and i'm not letting him go through more it has to be me it will be me
and nico not even realising that percy is looking at him and promising that and then being told by hades that he's a failure because he's not the hero and he's not his sister, hades trying to kill percy so nico has a chance to be a hero. not for nicos sake, for his own.

some of hazel's most defining quotes/moments are about choosing her own path and refusing to let others define her, not to mention that her powers literally let her define new pathways. from the beginning, she dislikes being paired with frank by others, resents nico for calling her bianca, hates how being pluto's daughter/in the fifth cohort dictates how she's treated by others. and even in her first life, even under everything that she was suffering, we still see moments of rebellion. she curses at her teachers and sneaks into segregated riding clubs and defends her mother to school bullies. but then when it comes to her mother she never once pushes back, even internally, against what her mother calls her. she doesn't disagree with being called a poisoned child, she doesn't fight that even in her own mind. it very clearly lingers with her but she doesn't try to process it or how she feels about it like she does everything else. in most cases hazel has a lot of self possession and a well developed sense of herself but it doesn't even occur to her in that moment that her mother could have been wrong about her.
“start your free trial now” what if i told u i am already experiencing trials. and the cost is more than i can bear
God how I wish Percy and Grover having an empathy link had been more of a game changer in the story.
I wish the link had allowed them to communicate consistently even while grover was out searching for pan. I wish Percy had felt the moment Grover fell in love with Juniper. I wish they shared dreams with each other almost every night. I wish Grover felt more connected to the sea and Percy more connected with nature in general after the link formed. I wish they had a low level of understanding of what the other was feeling at all times, allowing them to communicate without words and to annoy the shit out of people around them who know they are talking about them but just can't prove it yet. I wish they could send each other mental images of things they saw. I wish they could send waves of emotions to comfort or help the other calm down.
I wish they had a kind of connection that was unlike anything they had with anyone else, something they could never have with anyone else. I wish them having an empathy link had impacted the og trio dynamic permanently. I wish it had changed the way percy approached all of his fights, bc if he dies, grover dies as well. I wish the first thing he had done after learning the great prophecy was try to find grover and beg him to undo the link (and I wish grover had refused to do so). I wish they were the most important person in each other's lives. I wish they both felt entitled to be the one making decisions regarding the other in their absence/when they are unable to for some reason. I wish they both felt like no one knew the other better than themselves. I wish Hera blocking their link in SoN had almost made grover go insane. I wish they had been THE definition of platonic soulmates.

good morning to everyone except for me, who is thinking about how percy instinctively feels safe in the water to the degree that when he's burning alive and in indescribable pain he just summons an ocean. the exact line is like, "i needed the water," and it's just, out of context, he sounds like a college-aged huntington beach surfer dweeb who lives on his board and reads poetry about the power of the ocean. but in context, he's fourteen, in too much pain to think, and he brings the one thing that has pretty much always guaranteed immediate safety to his immediate person. he said fuck it, emotional support ocean. this is especially interesting if you remember how many lines percy has in the first series about feeling so bad he wishes he could drown. that's emotionally upsetting, the fact that even his emotional support H2O, the place where he - a kid who is used to feeling attacked and physically threatened - is literally nearly invulnerable, is also a place he thinks, "i wish this could hurt me," about. even the places percy feels safest, like with his mother, are places he feels like ought to hurt him, because they can. he knows that intimately. this is too fucking sad, instead can we think about percy listening to a very poetic common octopus talk about the power of the ocean and percy just nodding along like, "yeah, man, that's - it really is like that, you know, how the tides.... they just fuckin' go. can't stop the tides. the moon, you know, it's the - oh, the moon? it's, the, the sky... orb. i'm sorry, man, i forgot that octopus school doesn't have earth science."
“I wish this could hurt me” is physically painful to read what have you done
yeah on second thought it was a little intense of me to put that in a post that i then went on to end with "i forgot octopus school doesn't have earth science"
yeah that was a BIT of mood whiplash
what can i say, all this bitch knows is mood whiplash, absurd comedy, bad posts, eat hot chip & lie
coming back to this, i have a few thoughts, most of which many of you will find unnecessary, and also mean of me to point out, but it is my sworn duty to say rude things on the internet and i take it very seriously:
first of all, a) i was really going through it this morning, i really feel like someone should have staged a gentle intervention. a picture of a horse, a recommendation to watch some calming videos, a blanket-lined crate and sarah mclachlan’s smooth voice singing about how i’ll be flying into the arms of the angels. b) this post hits a lot different when you remember that percy references going to schools that used corporal punishment, so it’s just like, the kid was fine and left alone in absolutely zero spheres of life. the kid had absolutely no sphere of life that did not ever feel physically threatening to him. that’s no good. that is objectively the antithesis of good. c) point b hits different when you remember that percy’s first monster was a fury, a monster most people think is on the higher end of the scale, and that it’s usually unlikely that twelve year olds have the hypervigilance to react quickly enough in a fight to not die, except percy’s just a very, very unlucky twelve year old. his second monster was the minotaur, which is, legitimately, even worse. i know demigods are naturally hypervigilant, but also plenty of other demigods die by way of fury, i think there’s room to assume that percy’s just deeply, especially unlucky. and the ways in which he is unlucky have rewired his brain to perceive threats better. d) percy was really going through it, and i really feel like someone should have staged a gentle intervention. someone please pick him up carefully and speaking soothingly and place him in blanket-lined crate, to the tune of sarah mclachlan singing morosely about being in the arms of the angels. provide snacks. i’m told twelve year olds like gushers.
this was a bad post because not enough people are yelling at me in the tags. what do you want? what more do you want from me? do you want me to take you by the hands and say, “percy’s phobia of drowning in HOO was a tragic missed opportunity for an arc about how people who are used to the threat of violence or the threat of emotional harm can come to expect it from anywhere, even the places they rely on as safe. that the expectation of harm coincides with the belief of battered kids that they deserve it, because the brain of abused kids seeks to protect the validity of the abuser, especially at the cost of the self. the transition of percy finding comfort in a place that is natural to him with the occasional thought of it being dangerous, to an active fear of it, to believing he deserves the harm it can cause and will passively allow it to happen, is actually a good representation of the cycles people who were abused as children can fall into. it might be in relation to a magical idea, percy’s impossible and inhuman connection to the ocean, but that psychological process is a rational one for people who have that history to engage in. i remain very fucking angry that it was hand-waved as some mild bullshit about expectations, one really godawful conversation was had about it, and then it was ignored. i weep for its potential. i weep for the drama and the closure.” what more do you want. what will it take for you people to yell at me.
i wish I could yell at you, but I can’t because I also like turning everything under the sun into something a person could cry about, and I don’t wanna be a hypocrite
chiron said it would be better if nico died before knowing nico was a child of hades. percy lying to chiron and making himself a target to kronos is the only thing that stopped nico from being hunted down like an animal, like percy.
