And now Rocky and Adrian equally love Grace. They always argue over who gets to bring him to their work (Adrian likes to have him for feedback for the bio-dome and Rocky likes to have someone to talk to while he tinkers). They both watch over him when he sleeps and Grace wakes up to two Eridians very, very close to his face.

They’re the couple with the third wheeling friend, except they are all equally happy about the arrangement. Rocky and Adrian go on a date, just the two of them, one time and get asked by no less than six people if Grace is okay.

But. What if.

Rocky dies first. There’s an accident and something happens pretty soon after they get back, it’s quick but unexpected. And everyone has to come to terms with the fact that this nightmare scenario that he never even considered was happening.

And why would they expect it? Rocky had survived the 46 years at Tau Ceti alone, and their fishing trip, and the whole way back, and they’d done it! They’d solved all their problems!

So Grace needs to learn to live on a strange planet all alone, without the thing he gave up Earth for. And Adrian, who just got their mate back, has to live with the what if and the heartbreak of finally getting them back and losing them so close after.

He doesn’t realize it at first but after they get to Erid, when the mannerisms are right there, it becomes almost painfully obvious.

Like how they are both scientists. And maybe they both talk a lot, and like the same type of music, and react the same way to Rocky when he says certain things. And Rocky slowly sees more and more traits the two of them share.
