How do pets start fires?

The NFPA says a stove or cooktop is the number-one cause of fires started by pets. Electrical cords can sometimes be seen by your dog as a chew toy. When damaged, they can spark and cause electrocution or a fire. Secure any cords and hide them behind furniture or other obstructions.

How do I get my pet out of a fire?

Keep a collar on your dog, and leashes and cat carriers in an easy-to-access spot near an exit point so you can grab them on your way out.

Where do you put the pet alert sticker?

Put one on each side of your house or one in every apartment window. Consider a second pack if you need more than 4 alert stickers.

National Pet Fire Safety Day takes place every year on July 15, and it 19s a day to learn how to keep your pet safe in a fire. For many of us, pets are our most precious asset so it makes sense that we would dedicate a day to keeping them safe during one of the scariest things we can imagine. It was started by the Kennel Club and ADT Security in 2009 to help pet owners learn safety measures to protect their beloved pets and homes from fire, and it 19s a great opportunity to learn how to keep your fur baby safe.

The Culinary Historians of Chicago sponsored the first National Soul Food Month.

1960

Soul food grew in popularity

The term "soul food" attainted greater status after Alex Haley recorded Malcolm X 19s life story. Soul food restaurants served as a place where people socialized and ate together.

1900

Fried chicken came to America

Scottish immigrants had a tradition of deep frying chicken in fat. Many West African dishes were also made with chicken that was fried in palm oil.

1700

America discovered okra

West African slaves who came to America brought okra with them. It quickly became a popular item served with rice, or in gumbo.

Food mirrors its history. Soul food, for example, is a cuisine steeped in tradition. It began in the humble kitchens of African-American slaves as a one-pot meal cooked on a shelf over the fireplace. They had little to cook with, but they had memories of their home and love for their family. And the food reflects that. To remind us of this rich culinary tradition, the Culinary Historians of Chicago created National Soul Food Month in June. So while we enjoy these delicious foods, let 19s not forget the history.

July 2017

Lyme disease vaccine makes a comeback

The FDA grants Lyme disease vaccine candidate VLA15 "fast track designation" 14 allowing for further research and development.

2002

Lyme disease vaccine is discontinued

LYMERix is withdrawn from the market because of poor sales, originally due to lack of reimbursement by insurance companies and then to rumors about adverse effects. Despite a lack of evidence that the vaccine's to blame, sales plummet.

1998

Lyme disease vaccine arrives in the US.

SmithKline Beecham develops LYMERix, the first and only licensed vaccine against Lyme disease. Given in a three-dose series, the vaccine stimulates antibodies that attack the Lyme bacteria in the tick 19s gut before it enters the body. This was about 78% effective in protecting against Lyme infection.

1975

Doctors make first Lyme disease diagnosis

Lyme disease is diagnosed as a separate condition for the first time in Old Lyme, Connecticut.
