researching the history of education in japan and learning that, pre–Meiji Restoration, peasants/commoners formed their own schools to become educated because it was the best way of fighting tax fraud.
That is, when an official told you, a rice farmer, that you owed more taxes than you really did, it was very useful if you were good enough at math to know he was lying (and could prove it) and if you were good enough at writing to write a letter to your government defending your case.
all of which is to say it's crazy that mega-corporations are now pushing education to be "what if you paid us whatever we tell you to for the rest of your life and never do math or write anything ever again"

"The America I loved still exists, if not in the White House or the Supreme Court or the Senate or the House of Representatives or the media. The America I love still exists at the front desks of our public libraries."
-Kurt Vonnegut, A Man Without a Country
the heavy lifting the angelus vs. angel name change does to absolve him of his actions meanwhile spike is always just spike and his ledger is dripping with blood even as he is not allowed the luxury of being perceived as a being with free will….. reinforced by anya vs. anyanka like HELLO don’t piss me OFF….. this is also why the soul irritates me because he gets it most truly as a way to allow the narrative to neatly categorize the growth that was already there is Provable and reinforcing the false dichotomy of good ensouled / bad soulless that the show had otherwise already grown past
#the soul lore is actually fucked#and Anya catching zero heat from the gang for slaughtering thousands and being turned human against her will - she regrets NOTHING#double standards are INSANE#i guess if it's xander you're boning it's all good you can be a mass murderer all you like#meanwhile spike is treated like he is shit under their shoes even after choosing to help them and getting nothing in return#nothing he did was ever good enough#not even going full defender of Sunnydale and orphaned mystical keys after Buffy died - again not even getting respect or kindness in retur#he had to figuratively (and almost literally) kill himself to be sorta almost treated like a person#BY ONE (1) PERSON#the rest still either didn’t care or actively wanted him dead like ugggh do we have to help him#the unfairness of it all I want to SCREAM (@maurisescapism)
i don't think this writing on the show is necessarily a representation of how the writers themselves thought, or their morality, but i think it's a really good parallel to reality? of the standard that's used to measure a person's worth by observing whether they want to atone for their perceived sins (spike) by letting themselves be controlled and stepped on by their "betters" (the scoobies) or by actively trying to be better than they were with actions and organized critical thought and sensitivity, which would maybe go against expectations.
like i think the difference between spike and angel & anya is that spike introduces himself as a soulless murderer because that is the persona that he's living within and feels most comfortable in. angel introduces himself as someone already in the process of atoning and performing the broody self-aware lowlife. we don't ever see in real time the atrocities that he commits in all their glory. there's only one time we really see it with anya and we see it a loong time after she's introduced as a character, when we and the scoobies already know her and like her, and she's introduced as a character that's kinda silly too because how bad can a woman demon that fulfills woman-related wishes against men really be? women, am i right?! spike, on the other hand, is introduced as the villain and we see him doing villanous things for many many seasons before we get to anything redeeming about him. and then he tries to rape our protagonist which is the cherry on top. so already the audicence has different expectations for them just based on what they see on screen, not on the actual history of each one.
and i think the name dichotomy is the same thing. angel/angelus and anya/anyanka get the privilege of rejecting their demon selves and being embraced by the scoobies because what the scoobies haven't seen with their own eyes won't hurt them right? spike does have a human name, it's william. but spike is a villain and since he spends most of the show being the villain(ish) that's then more like a reluctant ally he stays spike. and when he gets his soul i think he has this very angel-like stretch of time where he doesn't fit in either name, especially while he's being controlled by the first but then he has that awesome scene with robin where he becomes himself again with that absolute banger "i don't give a piss about your mum." in which he's not william because he fully lets go of that scared boy that was devastated by the loss of his mom and he's not spike as he used to be either, because he doesn't feel beneath anyone anymore, not this slayer's son or the slayer herself. but spike is still who he is because his essence remained the same when he had a soul, when he lost it and when he regained it. and i think that goes against every nerve ending and self-righteous high opinion of themselves that the scoobies have, because how dare you not beg and grovel for my forgiveness? even worse if there's one member (buffy) of the group that fully sees this thing as a human being deserving of love and respect and hope and treats him accordingly because how dare you question and make me question if my thoughts and actions are not as morally sound as i thought?
all this to say that the scooby gang is an allegory for organized religion and buffy summers is jesus christ TO ME

These people blocked me on both Twitter and Tumblr, and then someone used a burner account to go off on me on Twitter. This person insisted that I was singlehandedly responsible for the project falling.
I made one comment, and it was this:
No clue how my single comment did this. But okay.
the avatar movies are crazy bc "what if colonizers literally inhabited and puppeteered the bodies of indigenous peoples in order to exploit their homeland" sounds like the premise of some sort of anticolonial horror film, like specifically the kind of thing that would be commenting on self-indigenization among white settlers, but because it's James Cameron his whole takeaway from that premise is "it would be preddy cool"
actually sorry. the takeaway is also "the white settler possessing an indigenous body would actually be extremely good, perhaps even The Best, at being indigenous, and he would become their Leader"

I love that Leverage really goes out of it’s way to show us that just because you break the ‘rules’, it doesn’t mean you’re breaking the rules. Rules and laws and society are all made up, at the end of the day, and all you really have is your own moral compass and sense of justice; is this just to you? Is it right? Should it be OK for companies to put people in insurmountable debt for the rest of their lives just because our medical care is so expensive in this modern day and age? No law or rule should change what you know in your heart is right and wrong, and I think that’s the key thing that makes someone a good person in my eyes.
#there was a time when parker wouldn’t have noticed, #not because she lacked the capacity to care, #but because she had narrowed herself, #to stay alive she cut off as many unnecessary things as possible, #watching her get them all back, #is one of the glories of this show (via @seananmcguire)
Leverage hands down has the best character development I’ve ever seen.
This scene hit me like a brick. My parents were hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt when I was 16 bc I’d had cancer the year before (my treatment ended up being free but the initial ER bills and such were not).
But somewhere along the line they just… Disappeared. My mom says they’re not being paid and they’re not in collections. It’s almost as if someone out there did…exactly what Parker did.
Ever since I saw this the first time, I’ve imagined it was Parker doing it. That she and Hardison had a free weekend and decided to take it out on a collections agency. That I was one of the lucky ones who got a little Leverage.
Okay but like yeah, that is actually a thing that happens, albeit not exactly like this. I don’t remember the exact process but basically there’s a booming industry to sell peoples debt - the business you owe money to sells it to someone else for a fraction of the money owed, wipes their hands of the whole affair, and now whoever bought your debt is riding your ass to get you to give the money to the. But it’s also entirely possible for people to just… buy up massive amounts of debt for pennies on the dollar, and then just. Forgive it. Because capitalism is a living nightmare, but the system is broken enough that it’s possible to exploit it for good sometimes.
Like, the main reason I know about this is because John Oliver did a piece on debt buying a few years ago, and ended it by revealing that he’d bought 15 million dollars worth of medical debt just so he could forgive all of it. Both to expose how broken the system was because some random fucker like him could buy millions of dollars in peoples debt with zero regulations, and also just to take the record for biggest TV giveaway in history.
A charity where you can do this, right here.
Be Parker! Be somebody else’s Leverage!
Reblogging for the website.
yes! if you want to help with the medical debt crisis in the US and have some extra money please donate to RIP Medical Debt if you can. They’re completely legit and really do what they say - you really CAN relieve an incredible amount of debt for the needy with even a small donation. I’m a monthly donor and receive a quarterly report of the debt they’ve abolished, and it truly is amazing. Based on those reports the average amount of debt abolished per person is actually I would say about $600 - which means, if you’re doing the math, that with a $6 donation to RIP Medical Debt, you can potentially pull one person out of a poverty spiral - maybe even one family. For six dollars. that’s a pretty good deal, I think.
RIP Medical Debt is now called Undue Medical Debt!
Undue Medical Debt makes it easy for donors to make an impactful difference in the lives of those struggling with medical debt.
