was it several minutes, or mere seconds? how long did the others have to wait?

did it look painless enough for it to be simple "inside his head magic"?

My honest metawriter’s answer is that I think it looked momentary and painless, based on “that was extreme”. I’m pretty sure if Charles were in any way visibly being tortured, Edwin would’ve been like “you should’ve killed her harder”.

My ficwriter’s answer is that I want to write that scene from the outside POV with it not appearing momentary and painless.

My advanced ficwriter’s answer is that I want to write the discussion afterwards, when Charles describes the experience to Edwin, and Edwin learns it was neither momentary nor painless.
