DEBORAH INGRID BENDER
"You have to look at life in different ways!" Age: 21 Pronouns: She/her Sexuality: Questioning Occupation: Bookstore cashier Debbie Bender is the kind of bright, softāspoken presence Hawkins likes to claim as its own ā the girl who got into Ivy Leagues, smiled through every expectation, and somehow still ended up shelving books at the local shop with ink on her fingers and hope in her chest. Bubbly, kind, and endlessly willing to listen, she radiates a sweetness people mistake for naivety, never realizing how much sheās survived or how hard sheās fought to rebuild herself. Loyal to a fault and terrified of disappointing anyone, Debbie moves through the world with a gentle optimism that feels almost rebellious in a town as bleak as Hawkins. Behind that sunshine, though, are shadows she never talks about ā the dropped degree, the years she lost to drinking, the night she woke up in a hospital and decided she wanted her life back. The Echoes cling to her in strange, comforting ways: dreams of arms around her, glimpses of demodogs in the street, a sense that the supernatural sees her even when she tries not to see it. Sheās confused by Eddie and Billyās return, spooked by the Upside Down, but drawn to it too ā the same way sheās drawn to Connie āWitch Bitchā Howard, her best friend and the only person who never treats her like Hawkinsā fragile pride....oh wait...they weren't friends anymore ever since Debbie slept with Connie's dad. Debbie may be an outsider, but sheās learning that sometimes the outsiders are the ones the darkness notices first.
