Sexual identities are meaningful in terms of how they influence one’s experiences and how they impact one’s sense of self. They are extremely important to those who feel they are key to their identity. Here is a master list of sexual identities, so that you can be more aware of others’ identities and your own. Labeling oneself can create a sense of identity and empowerment for some, and for others is unnecessary or disempowering. Respect those who choose to label their sexuality, and respect those who choose not to label their sexuality.

Androsexual- Someone who is attracted to males, men, or masculinity.

Asexual- Umbrella term for those who do not experience sexual attraction (or some who do not experience sexual attraction except under certain circumstances, see demisexual).

Bisexual- Someone who is attracted to more than one gender (sometimes simply stated as attraction to those of the same sex and of the opposite sex, although this definition is limiting).

Closeted- Someone who is keeping part or all of their sexual identity from all or some people.

Demisexual- Someone who does not experience sexual attraction unless they form a strong bond with someone.

Dyke- Often used as a derogatory term for female-identified people who are attracted to other female-identified people. It has also been reclaimed by some female-identified people to express pride or solidarity.

Faggot- Often used as a derogatory term for male-identified people who are attracted to other male-identified people. It has also been reclaimed by some male-identified people to express pride or solidarity.

Fluidity- Someone who feels their sexuality fluctuates and does fit into one, consistent box.

Gay- Umbrella term for those who are attracted to the same sex. Also is often specified to someone who is male-identified and is attracted to other male-identified people.

Gynesexual- Some who is attracted to females, women, or femininity.

Heterosexual- Someone who is attracted to those of the opposite sex.

Homosexual- Someone who is attracted to those of the same sex.

Lesbian- A female-identified person who is attracted to other female-identified people.

Monogamous- Someone who has a sexual and/or emotional relationship with one person for their entire life. Typically refers to serial monogamy, in which someone has a sexual and/or emotional relationship exclusively with one person at a time.

Pansexual- Someone who can experience attraction to those of any gender.

Polyamorous- Someone who engages in sexual and/or emotional relationships, in which all parties have consented and have knowledge, with more than one person. Sub-types of polyamorous relationships include: triads (3 people involved), quads (4 people involved), open relationships/marriages, & polyfidelity. The structure and rules of a polyamorous group varies based on boundaries, needs, and desires of those involved.

Queer- Has multiple meanings depending on someone’s context and understanding. The first is an umbrella term sometimes used by LGBTQIA people to refer to the entire community. The second is a politically charged term for someone who recognizes the homosexual label was created by hetero-normative people in positions of power in order to “other” and oppress queer people, and who uses “queer” to radically reclaim their otherness and to seek liberation. 

Questioning- Someone who is questioning their sexuality and is unsure of how they identify.

Same Gender Loving- Umbrella term used in communities of color as a separate identity from those they may feel belong to/are claimed by whites, to signify same gender attraction.

Skoliosexual- Someone who is attracted to non-cisgender people.
