Elsa had met up with Quasimodo's friend (The captain of the guard) earlier that morning to obtain his assistance. Phoebus would keep Quasi busy long enough for Elsa to get into Notre Dame, set up her gift and wait. He didn't know she was back in Paris but given the date she wanted to give him an extra surprise. Upon his return he would find all of his carving and whittling tools replaced with brand new ones tied with bows. And upon their discovery Elsa cheerfully called out "Surprise!"
ANOTHER YEAR , another day of FREEDOM before the sun began to set , and Quasimodo returned to the southern tower of Notre Dame. He had to in order to ring the bells in time. Today in particular was important: Le Jour d'Amour, the day of LOVE. The day that La Fidèle would ring out for all of the happy couples BLESSED with heaven’s light.
Not Quasimodo , of course , and normally the thought would ACHE within him , but not THIS YEAR. He refused to let it. He was determined to ring La Fidèle for his friends. There was nothing MORE and nothing LESS to do or say about it , and Quasimodo carried this determination with him the entire climb up the stairs &. ladders of the tower.
That was … until he spotted ELSA , and all thought flew from the hunchback without a moment’s notice.
“You’re back!” he exclaimed. Before he knew it , he’d rushed to his dear friend and hugged her close. In their embrace , Quasimodo was smiling. He simply couldn’t stop. Not even when he leaned back just to look at her. Oh , how he’d missed her friendly face. “I-I didn’t even know you were coming back to Paris! Not—— so SOON , certainly. I——” he gasped for breath &. let her go. Stepped back , and took her in. “I’m so glad to SEE YOU again.”
