Rose ran over to the door at the ring, wrenching it open.

"Chimey-Wimy!"

She calls out cheerfully, a grin wide on her face, One one that falters slightly when she realizes Leaf isn't next to him.

Chime readjusted his backpack on his shoulders, the usual weight off by a new addition to his pack.

"Where's Leaf?"

Rose leans forward, eyes bright and happy as she looks around for her other half.

"Mom had to hold him back for some chores. Sorry."

Chime bounced on the balls of his feet, backpack shifting a bit. Water, snacks, flashlight, knife, compass and some rope, Chime mentally ticked off.

Rose nodded, slipping on her boots.

"That happens. So are we out going to the forest still?"

Rose felt a little nervous being away from Leaf but their parents said they needed to get used to being apart, so....

Didn't make it any easier

"Yeah, I actually found a new place that I thought would look cool. It's a bit further out."

Chime tries not to tell her to hurry up or to hurry her along. That would only make her suspicious and he needed this to go well. He needed this to go correctly and according to plan.

"A bit further out without Leaf?"

Rose daisies an eyebrow and she laces her boots up.

"Over, under, around and through, meet Mr. Bunny Rabbit, pull and through."

Rose mutters to herself as she finishes tying them. She didn't like the thought of going somewhere without Leaf, especially somewhere new.

"What are you a chicken? Bak bak bak!"

Chime made chicken noises and flapped his arms like a chicken. She was hesitating, he could Not have that happen. He needed to get her to come. He needed to convince her. It didn't matter that she had her boots laced up. He knew how stubborn she was once her mind was set on doing, or not doing, something.

"I'm not a chicken! Fine let's go!"

Rose went along with it, it wasn't often that Chime wanted to get out of his comfort zone. And she didn't like being called a chicken! She wasn't a chicken! She was brave! Just like her Papa told her! She wasn't going to let a little hesitation stop her!

Chime led them through the forest, going down well worn trails. Then he veers left, pushing past bushes and small shrubs.

Then a strange scent curls through the air, pungent and rotting.

"Ew, what is that smell?!" Rose holds her nose shut, grimacing at the unknown stench. "Where is it coming from?"

"dunno, we should find out!" Chime says, heading straight towards their destination, Rose following behind him.

They trek through the trees, coming up to a ravine.

They come upon a large tree, its branches shadowing the ravine next to it. Rose goes ahead, clearing a path for the two of them. She reaches the tree's roots, scampering up one to look into the trench below.

She stops, color draining from her face at the sight, feeling bile rising in her throat

"Rose what is it?" Chime called out behind her. He silently slides off his backpack as he gets closer to her frozen form, taking out the tile knife he had brought.

He flicks it open with a silent click.

Rose ran over to the door at the ring, wrenching it open.

"Chimey-Wimy!"
