"Depp's Wonka is actually the closest to book Wonka" is such a weird take to me. Like YES his character does have some things that are more in line with his book counterpart, but there's still some bits that don't really match up. He's like Wilder's Wonka in terms of being faithful to the book kinda. Plus didn't Dahl see Spike Milligan as his definitive casting choice for him? Neither Depp nor Wilder could be as far from that as they already are
In my opinion he’s the furthest tbh. Book!Willy is all wacky energy and unapologetically loves children, he is a little awkward but awkwardness isn’t his main trait (which it very much is with Depp!Willy). Also the backstory, while not an objectively bad story beat, is very much more Burton than Wonka (literally, one of the scenes in it was admitted to have been partially autobiographical). Someone in a CatCF Discord server once pointed out to me that, as written by Dahl, Willy isn’t whimsical because of any of his trauma, he’s whimsical in spite of any trauma he’s experienced, which is what I feel like separates Depp!Willy from the book and all other adaptations, where any whimsy he has feels like a direct trauma response rather than something that’s always been part of him and he’s managed to hold on to despite the world putting him down. None of this is a dig at Depp or his portrayal of Willy, it’s just my thoughts on why that portrayal feels far-removed from my personal vision of the character as someone who identifies deeply with said character.
YEAH I totally can get behind Willy's whimsy just being well, simply second nature. The musical and the 2005 movie portray him as the complete opposite of the other in those terms.

Seriously, people who say that confuse me
His demeanor is described in the book as: “And his eyes – his eyes were most marvellously bright. They seemed to be sparkling and twinkling at you all the time. The whole face, in fact, was alight with fun and laughter. And oh, how clever he looked! How quick and sharp and full of life! He kept making quick jerky little movements with his head, cocking it this way and that, and taking everything in with those bright twinkling eyes. He was like a squirrel in the quickness of his movements, like a quick clever old squirrel from the park.”
Even looking at Quentin Blake’s illustrations he always looks like he’s excitedly jumping around and bouncing in one leg
I don’t really see that in Johnny Depp
(i don’t see it in Gene Wilder either, even though i do love his performance)
Dahl made a very intentional choice of giving Wonka a tailcoat in that its tails would consistently be in motion from how erratic and squirrely his movements are. Wilder and Depp? They don't have those specifically because their depictions don't really have Wonka be energetic like such.
