The Cathedral of St. Vibiana served the Archdiocese of Los Angeles for over one hundred years. It was named for St. Vibiana, a young martyr of the third century. The crown jewel of St. Vincent's Church in Los Angeles is the Grand Reredos. It was carved by Angelo Lualdi nearly a century ago. A little trivia for you: the figure of St. Edward the Confessor was made in the image of Edward Doheny, the principal patron of the Church. He holds a replica of St. Vincent's Church in his left hand. St. Vincent’s in downtown Los Angeles is one of my favorite churches. I would say that the only other church in Southern California that rivals its grandeur and scale is mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano. Here's another rendering of what might have been St. Boniface Church in Anaheim. This one was submitted by the architectural firm of Barker & Ott, one of the most prestigious firms of the time. Barker & Ott's work includes Good Shepherd in Beverly Hills, St. Anthony's in Long Beach, St. Charles Borromeo in North Hollywood, St. Mary's Chapel at Mount St. Mary's University, Chalon Campus, and the iconic Sacred Heart Chapel at Loyola Marymount University. Plans for a new church for St. Boniface began in the 1950s. Here’s an early proposal designed by George J. Adams (he designed churches all over Southern CA). This could have been St. Boniface Church.
