Diébédo Francis Kéré of Kéré Architecture recently finished his latest project, the Center for Health Care and Social Promotion in Laongo, Burkina Faso. With only about one doctor for every 20,000 people and an average life expectancy is 58 years, health care is a much-needed resource in this area. The $500,000 project was built by volunteers from the German nonprofit Grünhelme (Green Helmets) and local workers. The clinic has a double-skin facade using concrete blocks for the outer layer and compressed-earth blocks for the inner wall, and its fenestration, an array of operable square openings, not only pulls in fresh air but also frames views of the surrounding terrain. The clinic is one of a dozen civic-minded projects that the award-winning architect has designed in his home country, where he remains focused on creating sustainable and low-cost buildings for underserved areas in Africa. His growing portfolio includes schools, health centers, and cultural venues on the continent, in addition to more lucrative European projects that help support his practice. Kéré is one of over 100 architects, artists, and designers participating in the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial this October.

A modern interpretation of vernacular Cycladic architecture was adopted in the redesign of Hotel Andronikos in Mykonos, creating unconventional and unexpected spaces that are familiar and deeply Greek at the same time. The Cocoon Suites were conceived as a modern Mykonian room, using forms and the essence of Mykonos. The interior is a compact mass constructed of irregular unaligned walls, with a 3-dimensional feel to them as they are distorted, built upwards and slanted inwards.Read More: http://goo.gl/gafA2i
