Ducks

As I said, I’m recovering and am able to do less but ducks!

Also I’m really happy, I got Pippin to finally eat some food.

And the Khaki, Mary. With the teen ducks.

Also gave a splint to the baby duck we found , since its leg isn’t working right.

I’ve named it Mystery Miracle (MnM). Because it’s a Mystery where it came from and a Miracle it’s survived so far.

Pippin is still holding up, though I don’t know for certain what will happen.

She’s still recovering.

There’s a reason I put my finger in the photo, and that’s so you don’t have to see the condition her eye is in. However, her injuries are still mildly visible so YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

Her head remains tilted like so, as that is where the injury is. The only thing that super worries me is her ability to breathe.

I hope she makes it.

Oh, and…

As an added bonus surprise, I found THIS in the chicken coop.

I guess the remaining “non viable egg” was viable after all???

We put four eggs under the chicken. The two hatched and we’ve been looking after them. The third almost made it but passed in the hatch process. :(

Everyone apparently thought the last egg was not going to hatch since it had been well over a week beyond the estimated hatching time.

I THOUGHT they had taken the egg OUT from under the broody chicken (because why would you leave it there if it’s no longer viable?) But I guess they didn’t? I quite literally said “what the DUCK!?”

Now, is that exactly what happened?

No idea.

Literally NOBODY in my house has any idea where this thing came from. I just found it in the coop while I was feeding the chickens.

Chicken pecked at the other side of its head though, so it’s injured too. Hoping it and Pippin survive. ❤️🦆❤️

I forgot to post but for good reason…

They were attacked last night by a raccoon that managed to get under the box we put on the crate (crate did not have a door) and I woke up to Pippin’s frantic quacks and yelled at the raccoon.

I held her neck up for two or more hours making sure she could breathe. She finally seems stable now, I’ll be checking on her again soon.

The Khaki, Mary, is ok. Pippin was likely grabbed due to her size.

That raccoon was huge and I suspect it is the one that had been coming at our chickens in the past.

Mary is very protective of her and kept nibbling us every time we reached for Pippin. I took Pippin out of the box to treat her with hydrogen peroxide and Mary flapped out of the box to come be with her.

However, we have this divide between them because as long as Pippin’s head wound is still red, the Khaki’s instinct will lead her to peck at Pippin’s head, which we don’t want.

She’s stable now, resting and breathing is fine.

They are now TWO MONTHS OLD!!

Important side note-I will be gone for this week to go camping, I’ll return Friday and hopefully post some pictures to make up for me being gone. Orrr I might post a video of the ducks as a treat. Thanks for reading and joining us in this journey!
