It's so hard to know when you're helping someone and when you're letting someone take advantage of you. It's time I take back the title of being number one in my own life. I come first. I'm not a doormat. I'm the door. And if you want to walk through and into my life, you're going to need to say the magic word.

My grandma was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. My mom is really struggling with going back to work because she feels she needs to be with her in her last few weeks at home. It saddens me how many people out there suffer from mental illness, yet it's still so misunderstood. When I was in high school, my mom had a psychotic break. She tried killing herself and was hospitalized for about a week. They locked her in a room, took away her shoelaces, gave her a roommate and no bathroom door. When she told me what it was like in there, I became terrified of the thought of being admitted. I've suffered from severe depression since I was 14 years old. I have had my fair share of "thoughts" but I was always too afraid to tell anyone in fear of being taken to "that place" like my mom was. Maybe if there was better care, and not such a stigma behind it, I'd have gotten the help I needed years ago. Instead, I still struggle to this day with dark, sad thoughts that I can't control. I've been in therapy for years and I've tried countless medications. Maybe some day, I'll be better. Until then, I'm using writing as an outlet.
