*reads a paper on the noise distribution of a telescope’s measurements*
Me: that looks Gaussian.
*proceeds to look up a Gaussian distribution to double check*
Me: haha I was right!
The next line of the paper: which is Gaussian
Me:
Ah yes, Nobel season. Aka my annual laugh at how Alfred Nobel ‘simply didn’t care for mathematics’ because that right there is a Mood ™
Today I started some work with the Gaia archive and having distances makes my plotting so much more fun!!

oh it totally does, but you can’t hear it because space is a vacuum and sound can’t travel through a vacuum!
and that’s a good thing,
because the roar of the sun would clock in at around 120db heard from earth, about the equivalent to having a train’s horn go off three feet from your face.
constantly. all the time, even at NIGHT. there would be no escape.
Sound waves may not travel through a vaccum, but we can listen to the sun!!
Because the sun is a plasma sound waves from turbulence are visible on the solar surface; much like ripples on a pond (just far more chaotic).
Astronomers can then measure these ripples to explore the sun’s interior (just like earthquakes here on Earth) and we can also use these to produce a sound:
Also, the sun is often the ‘brightest’ radio source in the sky and actually contributes to radio static.
But if an aside, I’ve been at a conference and so couldn’t participate in climate action today but I’m so proud of all those who did!!!
Go get ‘em!
I checked the comments and have yet to find one being annoyed at the delays I’m so proud of my city right now 😭

I’ve also learnt the term ‘spherical cow’ this week. Mostly from people saying ‘this is more of a cow than a spherical one’.
We had a very contentious comment at a conference this morning ‘the Gould Belt exists’ 😂
Today’s mood:
Welcome to astrophysics, where 85K is considered ‘warm’ and 3900K is considered ‘coolm
I’m researching star formation, finding out that matplotlib has little star markers built in has made my year!!!
Breathtaking view of the Milky Way from the surface of Mars
the universe is amazing

Yes, we’re PhD students, no, we’re not mature.
(Facilities finally put up the repurposed whiteboard and this was the first thing written on it.)
Update, apparently we females needed representation:
