The things heâd done to try to find his uncle and Artoo had the damn map the entire time. BB-8 only had a portion of it, he assumed. âNo, I didnât and I donât think you have to worry about Rey telling anyone. Sheâs not like that.â At least, Kylo didnât think she was. So far, he knew there were things she kept hidden, even to herself.
A slight smile found itâs way on his face. Of course Rey would have taken those books, he wasnât surprised by that. Maybe sheâd find something in them that he hadnât been able to, something that would help her. âMaybe theyâre not but she might find them interesting. Who knows.â He certainly didnât.
Called out yet again. He couldnât say he was surprised to find that Luke was able to do that to him, to point out the things that needed to be said. The second part was what made him finally turn his head toward Luke. âSomething hanging over the back of my neck, like itâs breathing over me and doesnât want to back up. Before, I thought it was Snoke but⌠I think I was wrong. Whatever it is, itâs like that old quote about looking into the abyss and it looking back into you.â
He couldnât say how powerful it was but some part of him wanted to put himself between that darkness and Rey. Kylo reached up to touch his own face and almost scowled. For the first time in a while, he wasnât thinking about that damn scar. âRey and I fought on Starkiller base before it collapsed and she got a hit in on me. It was after IâŚâ
His throat tightened and he glanced away once again. Han Solo, his father. Watching him fall into Starkillerâs core and then dreaming of him for the months afterward. âAfter I killed dad. Chewie got a good hit on me too - havenât been the same since, didnât realize how much damage that bowcaster could do to someone until afterward. My side hasnât been the same since. Canât say I didnât deserve it. âŚWhy are you so desperate to bring me back?â
âIâm not worried about Rey. Though I believe she took those books because I was a pretty awful teacher and not the guide she needed. It is likely she took them with her to learn from and to the only other person who she knew could teach her.âÂ
His nephew was finally looking at him. At least that meant they could truly have a conversation. He sighed, knowing that even without the scars, his nephew was haunted by what he had done to Han.
âMy father cut my hand off with his lightsaber before telling me about our relationship. I have a cybernetic, but itâs not the same as the hand I once had. My wrists aches sometime from the replacement.â Luke knew all about how injuries impacted someone.Â
He managed to stand up, needing to stretch out his stiff position before he returned his gaze to Kylo.
âWhy am I trying to bring you back to light? Youâre my nephew.â It was a simple but true answer. âYour mother tried to protect you from the beginning and I wanted to help. I love you, Ben. I always have. Even though I failed you.â
âBefore I began your training, I had one other student, your mother. Leia managed to find a balance between her training and raising you when you were just a new born. Even when she was pregnant with you, Leia knew you would be strong in the Force. She told me you felt like a ball of warm light shot through with veins of shadow in the Force during her pregnancy. She wanted to protect you and she thought for some time that she would be the one to train you when you were old enough.â He began. âIt was the last night of her training when she had a vision about you and she knew that if she kept on the path of being a Jedi, her vision would come true. So she gave me her lightsaber and put it behind her for you. Iâm not so willing to put her or Hanâs sacrifices in vain.â
He swallowed and now he looked away from his nephew.
âAs for what you feel, I felt it too that night when you destroyed the temple. Itâs true that I was worried about you, Ben. But I never wanted to kill you.â The uncle confessed. âYou might think this to be some excuse, yet itâs the truth. It was like I was possessed that night by a shadow of a darkness I had only felt once before. It felt like I was watching my body move and unable to stop it until it was a moment too late. And I noticed the ability for the same darkness as that shadow in Rey.â
redfirejediâ:
âNo Iâm not particularly fond of them. So the tooka is that allegiant general you were talking about. She seems sweet. Though I canât see why she would like me.â She reached into her pocket and pulled out the cat toy placing it on the table. âShe left this for me this morning. Guess the huntresses wanted to leave me a gift.â
Mara finally looked up into his eyes as he spoke. They had definitely dulled since they had last seen each other, but a spark found its way into them as he spoke. All his ideas were definitely the Luke she had known all those years ago and it made her chuckle lightly. âYou are the absolute most Jedi Sith Iâve ever seen Skywalker.â
He paused once more in his eating and looked at her. A come back was resting on his tongue when he saw Mara pull out Firedustâs cat toy.Â
âThatâs her favorite toy. You should consider yourself lucky. The only other person sheâs ever warmed up to so quickly besides myself is my nephew.â Luke told her. âBut yes, before you ask, I gave her titles. Itâs just sort of made sense in my mind. Sheâs with me a lot and sometimes listens to me practice speeches and has laid herself in the middle of projected star maps to get my attention. Iâm sure sheâd love to play with you after lunch. When I last saw her, she was sleeping on my bed.â
He took in some more bites. âJedi Sith. What a strange idea.â He mused. âI take you like some of what Iâm trying to do?â
âYouâre not trying to rule like a tyrant. True Sith would. I also noticed your inability to create lightning last night. Youâre missing key aspects of Sith like your father and sister. Wonder why that is?â She smirked at her implacation.
He put his utensils down and looked at her, not necessarily coldly but with a vulnerability that he wouldnât let show to just anyone. âItâs easier this way on me. The Rebellion rose to fight against the Empireâs policies. Iâd rather not have Rebels in my Empire. Iâve studied politics since I was little. I may not be great at it, but I try. I leaned from my lessons that it is far better to be loved than feared.â
He sighed and looked down at his plate. âI donât have golden eyes and even my attempts at the lightning take everything out of me. It hurts. The first time I tried to do lightning, it was like half my soul was ripped apart. I fell to the ground. There was bleeding and I blacked out.â He returned his gaze to her. âI suppose Iâm lucky that I was born Vaderâs son. Otherwise, Iâd be tossed aside as a failure.â
Mara stopped eating and stood up. Against her judgment she went over beside him and put her arms around him before she realized what she was doing. Perhaps it was just an instinct from years ago. âYouâre not a failure Luke. Youâre just different. Youâre not like them.â
He didnât move as she stood up and came over to him. Her arms wrapped around him and he was taken back to wonderful nights years ago when they were together. He felt complete in that moment in her arms.
He swallowed and looked down, his long braided hair slinging over his shoulder.
âWasâŚWas there ever a chance for us?â He asked her.
She found herself laying her head on his shoulder. Every bit of the action felt right yet he was the enemy. âI think so. SometimesâŚsometimes I think there still is.â
He was feeling even more complete with her with him. âI want to find out.â Luke requested. âPlease, let me try.â It was a plea, a desperate plea.
Mara sighed as she removed her arms from around him and began to pace the floor. âLukeâŚyou know Iâd love toâŚitâs justâŚyou know this isnât me.â
âYou mean becoming an Empress? Or perhaps going to the dark side to become a Sith Lord?â He asked. âTell me, what you want from me. Give me a chance.â
âLukeâŚI canât ask that of you. I want the galaxy to be at piece. I want this war to be over. Sure you have great ideas but thatâs only half the galaxy. Weâve been fighting hard for years but after you plummeted into the dark and then the empire got a foothold, itâs almost impossible now.â
He watched her. "Isn't it better to have half than nothing?" He asked. "I cannot control what my sister does in her half of the galaxy. All I can do is focus on my Empire."
"I did what I had to do and it appears that you did as well. But I don't want us to be enemies, Mara. I love you, even after all these years."

sithroyalâ:
A simple, basic life in that hut. He remembered the days when all he had to worry about was his training and making sure his clothes were clean. Now, it was a whole host of different responsibilities that heâd brought onto his own shoulders.
Ben took the invitation to sit at the bed and  put his elbows on his knees, hands clasped in front of him as he stared at the ground. A soft snort of a laugh left him. âYeah. A stray thought of hers gave me the name of the planet, I didnât press more than that. She must not have realized that she did it.â
No, he couldnât say that heâd even thought of bringing up the force bond. It was the furthest thing from his mind but he supposed that Luke knew more than he let on.
âNo, thatâs not what Iâm here for. IâŚâ He clenched his teeth, jaw straining. Why was he there? A million questions and potential answers came to mind but all he could think of was the disappointing during the fight, knowing that he wasnât worth anyone in his family facing him with their own physical self. Even his mother had stayed in the safety of the old base.
His shoulders slumped and a sigh left him. âI donât know why I came. Answers, I guess. Thereâs a million different things I want to ask but I donât fu-⌠I donât know if I want to hear what might come.â Even then he stopped himself from breaking Lukeâs rules without even thinking about it. âSnoke is dead. Iâm leading in his place now.â But he wasnât proud of it, it felt like an empty title to call himself Supreme Leader.
âItâs not exactly like it was a secret. Artoo has the map to this planet in his memory and the name appeared several times in some old texts. Of course, it was also written down in my journal, but I doubt you have gotten your hands on it. Though I suppose I should be grateful that Rey didnât intentionally tell the galaxy where I was.â He said.Â
Luke looked at his nephew once the boy had settled himself on the bed. He noticed that his nephew was still avoiding looking at him.
âThis island is the location of the first Jedi temple. There was a library here and a tree. Unfortunately, the tree got burned down recently and Rey took the ancient texts, to study I assume. Not that it matters. Master Yoda told me that they are not exactly page turners. I didnât even read much of them.â Luke went on.
He appreciated Ben catching himself in the language.Â
âFacing fear is the destiny of a Jedi. You wonât always want to hear the answers to questions you have. I know that better than most. But the questions still must be asked.â At least he could give those words of wisdom to his nephew.Â
He listened some more to Ben. âI see. But you donât feel like you are truly in power, do you? You sense a shadow out there, somewhere, a threat to your power. Not to mention youâre not doubt on a hunt to find Rey,â He observed. âI can answer some of your questions. But Iâm not perfect. However, I want you tell me. How did you get that scar on your face?â Â

It was irritating to hear that same old tone and it took him back to when things were⌠relatively peaceful, before the First Order andâ Ben couldnât continue the thought. He cut it off as soon as it made his chest ache and turned to face his uncle. Of course, he wasnât stupid, Kylo could tell that Luke was injured but he didnât know how.Â
âMy language and manners are fine, thanks for asking.â Dry, sarcastic. At least that part hadnât changed. With a sigh, he finally started toward the hut and walked inside. From what he could tell, it was similar to the hut heâd lived in while under Lukeâs teaching. He couldnât stop thinking that this was a stupid, foolish idea but he still found himself waiting expectantly.
He reached into his pocket and took out something heâd been holding on to. There were several sitting in his medpac on the Silencer but⌠Either way, Kylo held it out to Luke. âA health stim. It should help a bit.â Of course, while they werenât expired, he couldnât be sure how long it would take for it to heal any of Lukeâs wounds.Â
But he couldnât meet his uncleâs eyes. Between his dreams, Snokeâs whispering, and fear of the unknown, Kylo kept his eyes downcast to the manâs feet. Heâd made a fool of himself on Crait and, even with the Supreme Leader dead, there was still more he needed to do.
Sarcasm. There was no doubt the young man was Han and Leiaâs son. It was a nice to have for even a moment back to the time before the First Order rose and he had lost his nephew to the dark side.Â
Once Kylo step inside the hut, Luke closed the door behind them. Sunlight poured into the hut from the windows, showing off the simple furnishings of the place that the Jedi Master had called home for some time now.Â
He didnât back away when Kylo reached into his pocket to retrieve the health stim. He could sense that his nephew wasnât here to fight, at least not at the moment. He reached for the stim carefully, holding it. Perhaps this was a peace offering. He could only hope it was the end of them being pitted against each other.
âThank you.â He put it on the table, intending to use it later. He limped slightly and pulled out the teacher to the table and sat in it to face his nephew, those fierce dark eyes that the boy had inherited from his mother were looking at the floor. âSit on the bed. Youâll have to forgive me. I didnât expect many guests and yet youâre the third guest Iâve had here in a short amount of time. I assume you figured out where I am from Rey. It appears you two have a very special Force bond with each other, even I could see you where you were holding hands from across the galaxy. But I presume thatâs not what you wish to talk about is it, Ben?â

Not long after the Battle of Crait, Kylo took to his Silencer and then to the skies. Hux wasnât pleased but heâd been happy to tell the General where he could shove his displeasure. Being Supreme Leader had itâs perks, he supposed. But that wasnât the point. Force Projection.Â
He refused to put a name to the gnawing sensation in his gut as he started for the planet - Ahch-To. Heâd only briefly caught the name from Reyâs mind, a stray surface thought, but it was enough to give him a place to investigate. Of course, coming up on the blue planet and descending quickly, Kylo carefully pulled the TIE into a graceful arc as he landed.Â
He could already feel the other manâs presence.
Stepping out of the ship, he headed straight for the collection of huts on the island. He stood in the middle of them and glanced around, patiently waiting. Kylo didnât see Luke immediately but he did speak up.Â
âYou know Iâm here and I know youâre here. I have all the time in the galaxy. So letâs talk.â
He had only a short amount of time to be by himself. He had survived the Force Projection for which he had thought he had nearly lost himself in. It had been far too long since he had used the Force. He had closed himself off from it for too long out of fear and his need to repent for his failure, for not keeping the darkness that night out.Â
He hadnât escaped from it unscathed from the Battle of Crait. A wicked ring of red scar now circled around his middle from where his nephew had sliced him with his lightsaber. There had been some blood and pain, of course. He needed some time to heal before he knew what he had to do.
It seemed, however, his time of healing was at itâs end. Even though he hadnât seen the ship break through the atmosphere of the planet, he could feel the dark presence of Kylo Ren in the Force. A great shadow with pain and still some light in it, despite what his nephew would want to believe.
Luke heard the call from the middle of the caretakerâs village. He stood up from his seat in his hut and opened up the door, poking his head out to see Kylo. He looked at his nephew and adopted the tone he usually used when he had been the young manâs teacher. âCome in here, Ben, and weâll talk. But do watch your language. This is a sacred island, after all. I assume that you do remember the good manners Han and Leia taught you.â

Mara felt something jump onto her bed and opened her eyes to see a red tooka staring back at her. What was a tooka doing here? She was about to protest the felineâs presence but it curled up in front of her, itâs purr almost calming to her frustrated senses. She had always liked tookas but had never gotten to spend any time with them. Mara decided to let the feline sleep where it lay and allowed its gentle purr to lull her back to sleep.
It was hours before Luke woke up. When he did wake up the twin suns of Tatooine were higher in the sky than when he usually woke up. He bolted up in the bed, feeling like something was out of place. He was never allowed to sleep this late. Firedust usually woke him up earlier to complain that her dish was empty and she was hungry. He was about to panic when he saw her walking into his quarters. He noticed that her bowl was polished off of food and she seemed happy. What was going on her? It felt so strange.
The Emperor sighed and got out of the bed to give her more food before getting dressed and doing some of his morning duties until the lunch he would have with Mara, for he could feel her presence in the Force, still in the palace.
â
The tooka had decided to spend the night with the Jedi before running off in the early hours of the morning to eat the food that her caretaker left out for her. She returned after her breakfast, jumping once more on the bed to drop one of her favorite toys in front of the sleeping Jedi before leaving to return to Luke.
Mara eventually woke up close to her usual time. A small smile crossed her lips as she noticed the toy where the feline had slept during the night. She saw it as a cute gesture and decided sheâd use it to play with the tooka later. She went through her usual morning routine yet meditation seemed to evade her. Lukeâs conflicting presence kept distracting her and she decided to try again later.
It seemed like lunch came all too soon but she had at least mentioned she would see him them. She didnât really have any spare clothes so she grabbed the bathrobe she used after her morning shower and wrapped it around herself, placing the toy in her pocket for later. It was easy to find the dining area and she stood in the doorway a bit awkwardly in her bathrobe but at the same time indifferent. She didnât want to give away anything about her current feelings nor her dream.
Lunch time came sooner than he anticipated. Luke was unsure of what to wear. Mara deserved respect, of course, but something within him told him causal. So he donned a simple black outfit and went to the dining quarters, sitting at one of the tables.
His dining room was different from that of the one he grew up using. In this dining room he allowed his servants, guards, and staff to eat along with himself and any guests he may have.
Right now, the room was abandoned save for himself.
He looked up after a moment when he sensed Mara coming close. There he saw her in a bathrobe. Going casual had been best.
Luke stood up and gestured to the seat across from him. âI had one of your favorite dishes from before you left prepared for lunch.â He told her. âPlease sit and eat. I hope you slept well.â
Mara couldnât help but notice his all black attire. She tried not to make it obvious that she was looking him up and down. Force he looked great in black. She shrugged and sat across from him. âIâm surprised you remembered what I liked. You changed so much after that day.â
She began to slowly eat her breakfast and shook her head at his question. âNo. I donât sleep well much. Havenât in years. Though I was surprised that a tooka hopped into my bed and slept with me. I didnât know you liked tookas.â
"Haven't you changed as well?" He asked he sat back down at the table. "Though some things never change. And I take you are not fond of my changes."
He took a bite of his food and paused when she spoke of the tooka.
"So that's where she went last night." Luke said. "Forgive her. She's really the Empress of this palace, so every room is her's really. Her name is Firedust but I nicknamed her Red because of her fur color. I found her in an alleyway in one of the lower levels of Coruscant and adopted her. I've granted her the title of Allegiant General and Chief Huntress."
Luke took a few more bites of his breakfast. "I've always liked animals, especially tookas. I've been working with some of my chief architects to build or refurbish various buildings and palaces to care for the tookas across my half of the galaxy. I believe the palace in Naboo is scheduled to be completed next month. Of course, I'm also going to be employing caretakers and animal medics for them." There was a spark of light in his gray eyes now. "I'm also designing gardens and having people in my agricultural division of my Empire work to develop sustainable methods to feed our citizens. I don't want anyone to be hungry in my Empire. That's along with a slew of other reforms I'm working on like helping the orphans, widows, and widowers and ripping the institution of slavery from the root."
