Does he owe it to Lestat to tell him the truth? From what interaction they've had so far, I can't say that they're friends, or going to be friends at the moment. Lestat isn't opening up, and even if Daniel is going to set an example by talking about his own struggle, it isn't going to move Lestat into telling the truth in return.

With Louis, however, it works. He's not interviewing Louis anymore, but at this point, he knows Louis and Louis knows him as well. He opens up to Louis about Armand, Louis tells him about seeing Claudia. As simple as that.

Daniel lies to Lestat because it's going to take far more than truth to drag Lestat's own TRUE story out of him. Were you a stutterer as a child? He still hasn't answered the question, but his silence is speaking louder than words.
