vanescosâ:
Ingrid strolled into the store doing her very best to contain her excitement. Her eyes were immediately drawn to the new section of the store, but her smile fell by a margin when she failed to see the title she was looking for.
âDo you, by chance, have the new edition of the history of reptilians? Esther Stein is the author. Iâve been waiting to add it to my collection since she announced it,â Ingrid explained with the same level of excitement a child might have stepping into a toy store.
âFreddie will like seeing the pictures too.â That was more of a projection than fact as Freddie was a snake and didnât care in the least about the images printed ink on paper made. He wanted to bask in his heat lamp and occasionally eat, but Ingrid liked to take him out of his enclosure sometimes and let him wind and curl around her arm and hand.
âThat doesnât ring any bells,â Genevieve answered with a shake of her head. âThough that doesnât mean that we donât carry it.â Gen typically restocked the shelves in the afternoon after the shop closed, but that wasnât a hard and fast rule; likewise, while their deliveries were usually on a consistent schedule, delays happened. âThere are a few boxes in the back that I havenât gotten to as yet.âÂ
She set down the pile of books sheâd been reorganized, and gestured towards the counter. âTell you what: if you leave your name and number, Iâd be happy to keep an eye out for it and let you know as soon as it arrives.â When she arrived at the counter, Gen leaned over and grabbed a piece of paper (a discarded receipt, it seemed) and a pen, sliding it over to the patron. âIn the mean time, is there anything else I can help with?âÂ

Piper grinned as she made her way inside Hideaway Bookstore, more so with the chance to see her friend over the books, though she may pick up something while she was there. Sheâd seen an interesting book the last time she was in. Spotting her friend she leaned against the bookshelf she was working on. âAnything good come in? Maybe a pirate adventure or a goodâŚwhat was that trope everyone likes? Enemies to lovers?â She holds out a To-Go cup to her friend. âI brought you favorite, and a little lunch if you have some timeâÂ
âI feel like enemies to lovers is all Iâm seeing nowadays,â Gen replied with a sarcastic roll of her eyes. It was a good trope, there was no denying that, and it was a guilty pleasure for so many, but it seemed as if booktok had suddenly reminded everyone that the trope existed. Now, she couldnât shelf a book without running into an enemies to lovers plotline. âIf you head over the the YA section, itâs all the books that look the same. I know Iâm not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but they legit all look alike. Like they were mass produced in some factory,â she complained as she reached over and accepted the cup with a grateful huff. âIâve always got time for you, and Iâm due a lunch break any second now.âÂ

Tatum was excited about tonights guest. Wyatt was a pretty big deal and he had a little bit of a past, which was always interesting.Â
They flipped through the cards with the questions for him and chuckled to themselves. âAlright.â They told themselves, standing up and making their way over to the dressing room for their guests. Tate always liked to chat with his guests before they went on air. Just so they could get a little comfortable to axe any last minute questions.Â
They knocked on the door and took a deep breath, flashing a smile. âWyatt, its your favourite host just checking in! How are we doing?âÂ
It had been some time since Wyatt had done a proper interview; months, if he was remembering correctly. Earlier in his career, Wyatt had gained a reputation for being something of a wild card. As such, his time giving official, unapproved quotes was typically limited, but recently heâd toned down his behaviors and the reins were being loosened. This interview was the first step to finally being in the good graces of his management team.
âFine, fine,â Wyatt replied, gazing drifting over to where the host stood in the doorway. âThanks for having me,â he continued. With a small, polite smile, Wyatt extended one hand in greeting. On the pitch, he was a loose canon. Off the pitch, he could be a lot to stomach, but he was working on all of that. He slid the other hand into the pocket of the black suit pants heâd been told to wear. It was classic, just another notch in the image of being an upstanding public figure. âTruth be told, itâs been a while since Iâve done this.âÂ

He chuckled at her mention that of swearing less. Romeo didnât care, he swore too much in the kitchen anyways. Gen knew that. He nodded and offered her a small smile. âWe did make a mess.â He chuckled.Â
The chef sighed and shook his head. âDo you⌠Do you wanna walk with me?â He asked her after a moment. âIâve got the day off.. Iâve been just trying to clear my head, come up with some new ideas for the menu.â He admitted.Â
Romeo figured she wouldnât wanna talk about work so he brought up the next worst thing⌠At least, he realized that after he blurted it out. âSo, my sisters asked about you a few weeks ago.â He chuckled. He couldnât help himself. He already had his foot in his mouth. âI mean⌠Itâs just⌠I had nothing to tell them and well, they uh⌠They want to come visit. I told them Iâd text you and ask if you wanted to grab dinner with them.â He told her, shaking his head. Romeo held up his hand and raised his brows. âI swear⌠You can tell âem to bugger off, they can get mad all they want but Iâm not gonna subject you to that if you donât wanna see âem.â He told her honestly.Â
His sisters were great but highly unpredictable and he was always outnumbered. It was a battle he would always lose.Â
A small part of her was surprised by how easily heâd agreed. They had made a mess and sheâd give almost anything to get back that feeling of easiness again. âUmm... yeah,â she replied, nodding slightly. âI donât have a long time, but a walk sounds nice.â It wasnât as if sheâd had plans for how she was going to spend her lunch break. At least, her plans hadnât extended passed people watching and maybe a bit of sketching, but both of those things could wait for another day.Â
âAre you trying to stick to a particular theme or kind of just seeing where the ideas lead?â Genevieve didnât know much about cooking especially not when compared to Romeo, but food was like art, she figured, in that they both required some spark of inspiration and some level of creativity. âI know that when Iâm stuck, I sort of just throw ideas at a page and see what sticks.â She offered a small shrugged as she stood and returned her small notebook to the back pocket of her jeans where it usually lived. âMaybe inspiration will strike on our walk,â she continued with a hopeful smile.Â
His next words caused Gen to pause mid-step. âYouâd be okay with that? If I went to dinner with your sisters?â She wasnât sure what the parameters were of their new unattached status, but sheâd assumed that when theyâd broken up, sheâd lost all access to his family as well. "Of course I want to see them. If youâre okay with it, Iâm happy to hang with the girls, but if the idea of it makes you feel uncomfortable or weird, I get it.âÂ

âItâs just me and this little guy right here,â Nazli kissed the top of Denizâs head, an overexcited three-year-old child sitting on top of her lap. âWe donât mind the company, trust me. Itâs been a couple of years that we live here and whenever I have the chance of taking him to one of these rides, I try to make it happen. Good memories, huh?â Nazli didnât want to have another child. Deniz was the only gift in her life that sheâd hold onto. Still, she would understand if the other person declined, not everyone liked children â which was frustrating to her, but Nazli wouldnât state it out loud. âWe have bagels in case it strenghts our case for some company during this ride.â
âOh I donât have to be convinced,â Gen replied easily, taking in the sight of the mother and child duo. The holiday season always made her nostalgic. She hadnât grown up with siblings, though sheâd desperately wanted them, but sheâd grown up with a lot of cousins and the children of her parentsâ friends which had felt nearly the same as having siblings. âThat sounds really nice. Some of my favorite memories growing up are of activities with my parents.â She settled in beside them to enjoy the ride and pulled her coat tighter around her. Sheâd experienced worse temperatures in her life, but sheâd never really been one to enjoy the winter. âIâm Gen, by the way. Genevieve actually, but everyone calls me Gen. I usually start talking and forget to introduce myself.âÂ
Location: Karsynâs House Status: Closed ( @beautifulxdreamersâ ) Time: 10 AM
Karsyn picked up her water bottle and took a giant sip. She shook her head at her brother and raised her brows at him. âLook. Iâm not saying itâs a good idea.â She shrugged. âItâs definitely not my smartest idea but ya know.. I think it could be fun.â Karsyn said honestly.Â
The idea in question was signing up for a marathon. âI think if I keep up with my physical therapy, I could really do it. My knee and ankle have been fine for a few years.â She told him with a small smile. Karsyn practically forced the words out. Ever since the olympics she had been terrified to do anything too heavy⌠Although she knew the likelihood of something happening was slim, she wasnât sure if she wanted to risk it⌠Here she was though, trying to convince her brother⌠and herself she could do this.Â
âWhat do you think, then?âÂ
It was a ridiculous idea. Wyatt had decided that even before his sister had launched into her explanation. If it could even be called that. To him, it was more a justification. âDonât let me stop you,â he replied, even though he should stop her, or at least attempt to. Even if it would be exercise in futility. He ran a hand through his hair and leveled a look at Karsyn. âWhat exactly are you trying to prove?âÂ
The question couldâve been construed for sarcastic, but Wyatt was genuine in asking. Theyâd been cut from the same cloth, the Keating siblings, and he knew that if heâd been in a similar situation, his response would probably be the same -- push himself beyond the point of reason if only to prove that he could. Still, the idea of his sister doing so bothered him. âAnd before you accuse me of being something ridiculous like patronizing, let me ask -- why not start smaller? A 5k or something? Test the knee out before you go full marathon?âÂ

âIâm sorry⌠this guy here doesnât know how to throw a ball which is why⌠it ended up all the way over here.â
Wyatt glanced at the guy in question. âWell then, maybe this guy over here should learn before doing that in public and ending up with a lawsuit.â

Romeoâs mouth opened and then closed. Twice. He swallowed quickly and pulled his hood off his head and sighed. âGenevieveâŚHey.. Uh.. Iâll go.â He told her. This was the right thing to do. He should leave. He wasnât in her life anymore and why should he get in her way anymore. The chef turned to go and took two steps before quickly turning around. He reached his hand up towards her, pointing at her slowly and then pulled his hand away. He got could do this. Romeo sighed again. âLook. Shit. I hope youâre doing good. You look nice and I bet⌠I bet things are good.â He paused to let out some more air. He knew he was absolutely embarrassing himself but he didnât care. He couldnât help it. âIâve thought about calling. I mean⌠I typed out the number, the messages⌠But uh⌠I just write it down in this bloody notebook instead.â He shrugged. Romeo pulled his hands into his pockets so he would refrain from overdoing it. âMy therapist told me itâd be a good idea.â He admitted. He smiled and nodded. âYeah, one of the guys at the restaurant recommended âem. Said they were really good.â He couldnât believe he was telling her all this. It wouldnât fix anything. âI just wanna say though⌠Iâm sorry.â He said sincerely. âI know Iâve said it a hundred times⌠Iâll say it a hundred more.â Romeo stated, pressing his mouth into a flat line. He wasnât even sure Gen would reply. Maybe sheâd tell him to fuck off so he wouldnât have to imagine a world where things might one day go back to where they were. Romeo started to wish his parents didnât drill being a hopeless romantic into him for this very reason. Heartbreak.Â
Genevieve. It was strange to hear her full name falling from his lips. Sheâd always been Gen with people she was most comfortable with -- it was familiar, safe -- and there was no one who had made her feel those things more than Romeo. If anything, her name was a subtle reminder of the distance that was between them now. Sheâd done that, Gen thought. Sure, she hadnât been ready to get married, but she wasnât sure that sheâd been ready to live life without him completely. Though there was hardly anything she could do about that now. Time had passed, and theyâd both clearly moved on.
She was in the middle of an attempt to tell him to stay, that she didnât mind having him around, when he spoke again, and all Gen could do was wait and listen as the words poured out of him. âListen,â she started, when it looked as if heâd taken a break. âIâm proud of you. Therapyâs a real big fucking deal.â Her lips twisted at the curse. âSorry, trying to swear less, but Iâm failing miserably.â She felt her cheeks heat at that.
âYou donât have anything to apologize for. Not then. Not now. Things just didnât work out for us.â It had taken her a long time to come to that conclusion. For so long, sheâd been furious at him. Mostly because that was easier than admitting the role sheâd played in the ending of their relationship. Then, sheâd spent some time angry at herself, unable to keep denying it. Now, though, she just felt sad whenever she thought about him. Romeo was like a toothache. She could ignore her feelings about how things had gone down for the most part, but every now and then, sheâd poke at them and the ache would flare up all over again. âWe really made a mess, didnât we?â

Riley wiped the bar down just as someone slid into the seat in front of her. The job was monotonous and it wasnât uncommon for it to feel like time dragged on while she was working, but at least there were sometimes fun stories to be heard whether she was meant to be privy to them or not.
âDamn, youâre really gonna dirty the spot I just cleaned, huh?â She smirked. A little light-hearted teasing didnât hurt anyone except maybe the mood now and then, but that was a gamble she didnât mind taking.
âSo, whatâll it be? And should I bother cleaning the area next to you or you gonna have company?â
It had been a long day. Too long, if Victor was being honest. When heâd transitioned into the world of self-employed, heâd expected to work shorter hours. After all, heâd be pursuing his own leads, chasing down the stories that he deemed significant. If anything, though, he was pulling longer hours now than he ever had. Even in the first few years of his career when heâd been young and desperate to prove himself in the cutthroat world of investigative journalism. It would seem, that despite his best efforts to be better now, Victor had gone too long building the habits that were commonplace to him now, and he did not, in fact, have proper work life boundaries.
Which was why he was here instead of at home spending some much needed time with his husband. âApologies,â he replied, as he settled unto the bench. âIâll be drinking alone, as sad as that may sound, so please donât inconvenience yourself for me.â He flashed a smile in the bartenders direction and drummed his fingers against the counter. âIâll have a shot of bourbon.â

It was hard for Link not to pull a face as he overheard someone complaining about their order to the shift lead. It was busy, and mix ups were bound to happen, but the tone was extremely rude. Quickly shifting his attention to the next person to approach the counter, he didnât bother to put on his regular customer service face, instead opting for a smirk.
âYou here for coffee, or to find a good excuse to get me out of here early?â
Some days, Wyatt was convinced that he ran on caffeine. Despite the fact that he was generally a morning person and had had a schedule that consisted of waking at 5 and spending the first two hours of his day training for as long as he could remember, there were mornings when he needed an extra boost. This was one of those mornings. âCappuccino. Double shot of espresso,â he ordered when heâd finally made it to the front of the line. Wyattâs gaze drifted over to the commotion that was occurring nearby before returning to the barista. âAnd sorry, but I donât run rescue missions.â
who: @despondences jin, our beloved where: their home
Victor felt as if he hadnât seen his husband in days. That was nothing new for them â Jin was an ER doctor and Victor was often out pursuing some lead; their schedules frequently ran parallel to one another. Early in his career, Victor had decided that if he was to have any hopes of being a Pulitzer awarded journalist, there were things heâd have to sacrifice; days off just happened to be one of those things. In fact, Victor couldnât remember the last time heâd actually taken a day off. Not even when heâd transitioned to being his own boss. It was for that reason that Vic found himself arranging what he could only hope counted as a passable breakfast in bed for Jin. He took a few more minutes to ensure that everything was perfect before walking it to their room and settling it down on the bed beside Jin. Looking into his eyes, Victor saw the same person heâd fallen in love with all those years ago when theyâd both been young and life had help so much promise. âI figured,â he began, âsince Iâm my own boss nowadays, that maybe we could spend some time together. That is, if you can spare a few hours. I know your job needs you.â

â
â  Savannah had the time to run a few errands before picking up her youngest and the collection of books waiting to be donated in the trunk of her car was one of them. It was the one that took the least motivation too. Being a regular, or as regular as she could, she was always looking for an excuse to browse the shelves and find something new although as of recent it was more for her. Unfortunately, books were not as cool as they once were according to a ten-year-old boy.
âBusy day?â Savannah asks. Reusing the same bag she had bought the books in previously, she one by one picks them out and places them on corner of the counter in two piles â one for adults and and one for children. âBy the way⌠your recommendations last time were all winners. I have to admit that my favorite was the The Chestnut Man so if thereâs anything along the same creepy Scandinavian vein please point me in the right direction.â
âMore or less,â Gen replied easily. Sheâd been in the middle of shelving, but she would always prioritize conversations with customers, especially regulars. That was how small bookstores stayed alive in the face of chain dominance -- by word of mouth and the cultivation of an environment that encouraged customers to return. Gen watched as Savannah piled the books sheâd donated unto the shelf. âLooks like the gently loved sectionâs about to gain a few new additions,â she noted, running her fingertips down the spines of the books. âIâm still working on the name of that, but you get the idea.âÂ
âBest book Iâve read all year.â Genevieve wasnât exaggerating. There was something magical about Sveistrupâs command of language. Perhaps, magical wasnât quite the right word for the spine tingling sensation sheâd had while reading the novel, but if there was a more apt word, it wasnât yet a part of Genâs vocabulary. âThereâs a netflix series, if youâre interested,â she offered. âNot nearly as complex as the novel, but when are adaptations?â As usual, Gen was happy that sheâd read the book before watching the show. âI canât say that Iâm up to date on my Scandinavian thrillers, but I think youâll enjoy Girl, Forgotten. It explores a decades old cold case.â

âOkay,â Gen began without preamble. She swiped a hand across her face, smearing black smudges across her cheeks. As usual, sheâd spent the first few hours of her day off sketching which meant that her fingers were now black with the remnants of the pencil sheâd been using. Not that that bothered her. Gen wasnât sure she could remember a day that she wasnât sporting some sort of art material. âIâm thinking of dyeing my hair pink. I think you should join me. We can convince the others. Make it an apartment wide thing. You know, like community bonding. Think how cute weâd all be.â So waved her hand as if it was the simplest request on the planet. âSo, you game?â
