“Yeah, about that.” Beau tossed her staff and caught it again, then rested it on her crossed legs and turned to look at Caleb. Through the night vision goggles, she could see him looking–well. Existentially depressed, because that was how Caleb always looked, but the specific kind of existentially depressed that meant he was worried about something in particular.

“How are we gonna play this? Not, like, all of the Mighty Nein.” She waved her hand towards their sleeping party, huddled together under the bubble. “I mean you and me. Empire Kids. ‘Cause I don’t know how much longer either of us can run away from our shit. Dairon still thinks I’m loyal to the Cobalt Soul, and the Bright Queen hasn’t exactly been shy about showing us off. Sooner or later, somebody’s gonna figure out that we’re playing both sides.”

    A small headache started to form at his temples, and he moved his fingers against the skin, trying to edge the pain away. He couldn’t find fault in her words, and if Caleb were to be honest with himself: his thoughts were along those same lines.

    Setting his book down, “We have to be cautious of our actions,” Caleb made sure to emphasize, “since we cannot control the Bright Queen’s actions.”

    Playing both sides? Caleb’s mind reflected on that notion: were they actually playing both sides? While they technically have helped both the Empire and the Dynasty in various ways, both Beau and himself have their issues with both sides.

“That’s kind of what playing both sides means, though,” Beau pointed out. “Taking advantage of situations. Staying alive. Being sneaky motherfuckers.”

She drummed her fingers on her staff and debated asking Caleb who would recognize him, if they wound up involved in peace negotiations like the Bright Queen had been hinting at.

Second watch with Caleb again. It’s mercifully quiet, the fields vast and cold and empty. The moons hang overhead and light everything up silver. It’s flat for miles. If anything sneaks up on them, they’ll see it coming, and nothing’s tried so far. Peaceful, except for how Beau is about to lose her fucking mind.

“You think we’re still gonna be heroes when we get back to Rosahna? Or is this another government that we pissed off?” She tosses her staff in the air and catches it again, just to give her hands something to do. “ ‘Cause I’m not feeling great about our chances. Unless you have another miracle you can pull out of the haversack.”

    Night watches were a time where Caleb could look over his spells and figure out any plans for the next day. However, when it was himself and Beauregard, the topics that are discussed are often philosophical in nature. 

    And tonight was no different as the subject about their relationship with the Bright Queen. Though the comment about him having another “miracle” did make him chuckle slightly.

    “Yah, another miracle,” though his face does become more serious, “I am not too confident on my understanding of the Dynasty, but we do have a large favor with them after giving back the dodecahedron.”
