Gypsy Mamba just released a new album βDa Feenuxβ on Alpha Pup Records - now he answers our questions in our interview series, the Dime, where we ask a musician 10 questions about various aspects of their career: 1. Describe your music in one word. Savior 2. How do you like to imagine people listening to your music? i always picture my shit playing in a museum. i picture people listening to my music while admiring art. but when i play live i imagine people being excited for the basslines n wierd stuff goin on in a track. id like to think my music should be listened to in all aspects from calm to hype i wanna fit in the middle there somehwere. 3. What equipment and software programs do you use for production? i make everything using Reason8 never dabbled in any outside vst programs or analogue toys, too broke. 4. How long does it usually take you to produce one track? the best ones take me the less time i would say a day or so working on the track constantly max 2 days. i usually scrap everything else in a folder to be worked on later but they end up just getting lost as i start newer projects n move forward. 5. What is your earliest music-related memory? my most earliest music memory ever was when i got a saxaphone in junior highschool and joined band. after about three years of playing in church choir with that instrument i grew sick of the same sound and style and i wasnt into jazz or anything like that so i didnt persue other routes for sax, i was into music i didnt even know existed yet (strict religious parents) so i will never forget that starting point in realizing what wasnt for me. i didnt figure out what i was into til my early twenties going to low end n hearing the music there i was like βthis is what i been lookin forβ then four years ago i started making my music electronically and thats where ive been at home. 6. Do you have any rituals associated with creating music? the funniest thing. i actually have a βreligiousβ type ritual where i smoke a bowl then i smoke a bowl of resin (left over weed tar in my pipe) and hit my hash oil then i stare at my lil owl shrines i have around my room n think about the first sounds or style that comes to my head once that happens i start workin on a track i literally do that almost everyday and its how my entire album βDa Feenuxβ was produced. the very name of my EP is based on the ritual. I call resin smoke the phoenix of weed because it comes from the ashes of burnt marijuana like a phoenix lol shits deepβ¦ 7. What is your biggest non-musical influence? Comedy is my biggest non musical influence. im inspired by cats like tim n erics out of the box type humorim a die hard fan of adult swim. i like controversial type humor because i like to think there is a way to push boundaries with music as well, the same way they are pushed in comedy. 8. If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be? Thats a good one. i feel kinda wierd answering that question basically because im a new booty to the industry i would feel out of place suggesting that something should change with my little knowledge i have but if i could change ONE thing it would be the power of fads or trendy music takin over should die, all it does is influence a younger producer to make a certain sound that they will end up hating n confuse them as a artist later when the fad or trend sound dies. not sure if i answered that correct but its the first thing that came to me lol. industry that feeds into trends for capitol is something i would back away from. 9. What is your idea of the perfect day? The perfect day for me would be a day when i woke up debt free, out of the systems court files, out of poverty, getting my license back being with my family living my life like a normal person lol. we almost there tho minus the poverty part which im not too worried about cause it could be a lot worse. 10. If your music was an animal, what would it be? somewhere between a green mamba and a great white owl. as a person of gypsy descent the stereotypes of snakes have been hexed on us forever! so i took that and rolled it into my name as a sense to own it. i am βgypsy snakeβ and i chose a mamba because its one of the most deadliest snakes in the world and if im gonna be labeled as any snake it should be the baddest one. The owl is there to signify and represent that im wise the owl is the wisest bird in the animal kingdom to me and its a bird that hunts during the night like most producers i create during the night i consider that my hunt, also as a person of my cultural background we are known for our street smarts plus im nocturnal as fuck so i relate that to the owl. shit goes deep lol so yeah in a nutshell βSnakeowl?β
