Hey!

So, this past Monday I went to see Paul McCartney! It was my second time seeing him, the first being in 2005 (9 years ago, wow) in Columbus OH. Then he came here in 2010 and somehow I missed it. Well this time I went. It was amazing. It was Ringo's birthday too! I might have exploded if Ringo just happened to show up, though sadly he didn't. But the band played a bit of Yellow Submarine and said happy birthday to Ringo, and some people in the crowd had signs for it as well. They also played Geroge's song Something, which Paul started out by himself on the ukelele. And had a little shoutout to John as well when Paul played Here Today by himself, which is always an emotional song. Other highlights for me were: Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five, Let Me Roll It, Helter Skelter, Ob-la-di Ob-la-da, Being For the Benefit of Mr.Kite, Band on the Run, Hey Jude, and Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End. Full set list is here. If you're going to see him you might not want to read it, since it will likely be the same for the whole Out There Tour, and I've already spoiled enough! But I can't recommend going enough. Even if you get the cheapest seats, it's a really amazing time and you won't regret it. Paul still sounds great - the guy can still scream, and play guitar like a beast, but you gotta figure his touring days (read: years) are winding down as he is currently 72.

When John was 18, his mother Julia was run over and killed by a drunk off-duty policeman. John dedicated this song to her and to Yoko, whose name in Japanese means ocean child, referenced as a line in the lyrics. Folk artist Donovan Leitch, who was with The Beatles at the Maharishi’s camp in India earlier in 1968 taught Lennon the finger-picking guitar style he uses in the song. [X] Inspired by the style, John immediately wrote two songs: "Dear Prudence" and "Julia." He made a demo of the latter song at his "Kenwood" home in Weybridge upon his return to England, at which time he also made a demo of a similar finger-picking song he would later revisit during his solo career, "Look At Me." [X] Inside the final days of May 1968, immediately before beginning work on the White Album at EMI, The Beatles gathered at George Harrison’s house in Esher, southwest of London, to routine their latest compositions. He made yet another demo of "Julia" at George's home, "Kinfauns", in Esher. It is the only Beatles song that John wrote and performed himself without accompaniment from any of the other Beatles. [X]

And all the stuff on the White Album was written in India while we were supposedly giving money to Maharishi, which we never did. We got our mantra, we sat in the mountains eating lousy vegetarian food and writing all those songs. We wrote tons of songs in India." -John Lennon

Julia was the last song to be started for the White Album.Sections of the song were adapted from lines from the poem Sand And Foam by the then-fashionable Lebanese poet Kahlil Gibran. [X]
