He sucks in a deep breath and lets it out slowly. “No, I shouldn’t complain,” he says. “It’s just going to have to get better from here.” “Well, it can’t get much worse,” Kimi points out. Ollie scoffs, smiling as he does. “Right, well, you can just fuck off, then,” he says. Then reaching up he stretches the skin of his cheekbone back as he shakes his head. It makes him look almost skeletal. He looks Kimi in the eye and quietens his voice. “Oh, shit, Kimi… I’m going to have to go out there tomorrow…”

“And what else?” For a moment Bono simply holds his gaze. It’s as if the man is hoping if he’s silent enough then Kimi will give in and stop talking. But this is a game of intransigence, and Kimi is a nineteen year old boy - Bono doesn’t stand a chance. “We’re experimenting with a couple of upgrades on your suit,” he says. “Brand new tech, still in development and not ready to deploy. Something to make it adapt better to the water, something to make it harder to keep track of you. It’s early stage stuff, still being tested on smaller models.” Kimi narrows his eyes, and Bono swallows. “And…” “And?” Kimi presses. Clearly things are not going the way that Bono hoped they would. Kimi only feels himself becoming more and more suspicious of the man as he continues to withhold information. “Let me get you that custard cream.”

“I can make you feel better.” Ollie snorts, opening his eyes and watching him closely. Kimi stays where he is, mere inches from his face, and gazes back. From this close he can see the details of his irises, the beautiful brown swirls like rich chocolate or an earthy clay. There are darker streaks closer to his pupils that give the sense of depth, as if he’s staring into a puddle and wondering what might be contained within the murky waters below. There are lighter tints around the edges that almost take on a greenish hue, almost like some kind of stellar nursery. With his hands still on Ollie’s cheeks he leans closer, and Ollie leans back. The offset in their centre of gravity is enough for Ollie to fall all the way back into bed - his curls splaying out in all directions against his pillow - whilst Kimi has to drop his face to keep from smashing their foreheads against each other again. Instead he opts to plant one hand on either side of Ollie, shifting the lower half of his body so he has one knee on either side of him too. “Is this how you plan on making me feel better?” Ollie asks. “Because we have an appointment.” “Your boyfriend is on top of you and you want to think about an appointment?”  “If it was up to you, you’d always be on top of me."

Kimi presses his lips against the cool carbon fibre of the W17’s halo, his fingers running over the smooth curves of the chassis as he lingers. Over the last few days his mechanics and engineers have lovingly rebuilt her, the same care applied as there is at the start of every race weekend, painstakingly tested all her parts, and now she’s in tip-top condition. He’s heard George say that often enough about his own car that he’s picked it up, and he can’t seem to shake it. They’re fun words to say together, tip-top. They pop off his tongue and make him smile.  What doesn’t make him smile is the reminder that he’s not the one that will be making use of the car this session. He’s not a rookie anymore, which means he has to step back twice this season and let someone else take her for a whirl.  “Don’t get used to it,” he warns the car softly, his voice low - only for her. “It’s just for an hour, eh? Then you’ll be back with me. You know I’ll make you feel good. We always have a good time together.”
