Cara tried to appear confident when a guy she didn’t know approached her. Sure, he could be fine, and Little Winds was usually fairly safe, but it didn’t hurt to be on her guard. She listened to his taunt with a confused tilt of her head. “I’m sorry, what? It’s a simple mistake.”

“A simple mistake that’s probably going to cost you a ton of money,” he pointed out, folding his arms across his chest. “By the looks of it, you’re pretty fucked. I guess that sucks for you, huh ?” he asked, canting his head to the side. “You probably need a phone, yeah? Someone you can call to come and fix your issue?”

“I’m no musician,” Levi prefaced his argument with his credibility or, rather, lack thereof. “But I don’t think Adam Levine saying ‘ooo’ at different pitches for four minutes is really music.”

“If you’re not a musician, why are you being so critical?” she challenged, just to see how he’d respond. “Have you never listened to Sunday Morning?” she asked, arching a brow. “Like, really listened. Without bias? You’re really missing out.”

“Piper, what’s the matter with you? It’s not just seltzer water,” he repeated her phrase back with disdain, emphasizing his displeasure with erratic air quotes. “It’s the best flavor of La Croix, and I had the last package in the entire store.”

“Nothing’s wrong with me, Taj. I just don’t see why you’re this upset over seltzer water.” Stifling her laughter was a challenge, she barely managed to succeed this time around. “It was highly unethical of him to steal it from your cart, but you can always go to another store to buy some, it’s not the end of the world. Okay? It’s going to be fine, you’ll get your La Croix.”

Cara fiddled one more time with the driver’s handle, but, as she expected, the door remained locked in place. Her purse taunted her from the passenger seat, and her brows furrowed in frustration with no keys and no phone. She whipped around and leaned her back against the car in a moment of self-pity before she noticed someone else in the parking lot.

Kyle had seen her around before, he had only spoken to her a handful of times, though. He didn’t have the same problem as her, he’d never been dumb enough to lock his keys in his car, and he couldn’t help but find it amusing. “Wow, seems like you’re stuck in a shitty situation,” he said, laughing slightly. “Tell me, how does someone manage to be so foolish? I don’t get it.”

“Music really does have the power to move people,” Levi said absentmindedly to the person at the next table, looking up from his doodles as he spoke. “For example, Maroon 5 is playing in this cafe, so I’m going to another.”

She opted to let out a small hum in agreement, nodding slightly at the male’s words. Music really did have the power to move people, she believed. “Anything in particular you have against Maroon 5? At least it’s not like Cardi B or something, fuck. ”

“Hey,” Taj said loudly, rushing to a person down the aisle and grabbing their arm. “Have you seen a guy about this tall with brown hair, wearing a green bro tank? He took the last package of the pamplemousse La Croix from my cart.”

Brows knitted in confusion as she was chased down by the male, unable to keep the amused laugh from slipping through her lips at his question. “You’re... You’re being serious right now?” she asked, licking her lips. “Taj, I can’t believe you flagged me down to ask me about seltzer water.”

music played in his ears as mateo rested against the park bench. he had a long night, and being outside in the warm maine air helped his pounding headache ease up a little. his eyes were closed, and he had no indication of moving any time soon. that is, until his headphones suddenly stopped working. mateo clicked through a couple of applications to see what it really was, but it really was just his headphones malfunctioning. disappointment settled in his stomach, and he groaned loudly. this sucked.

“The beach has definitely been one of the best benefits of the move,” Cara said, smiling at Piper, the person responsible for her move. Some days Cara could pinch herself to make sure she didn’t dream moving to the same town as her best friend and spending every day on an actual tv show…oh, and the beach! She was so lucky.”

Taking a left at the four-way stop, Cara said, “Well, I heard there’s a haunted building on campus. Supposedly someone died in a dorm fire, and they still haunt the building they rebuilt over that spot.”

“You just gotta love the beach, right? I mean, it’s just one of the best places to be.” Piper was glad that her friend had made the move to Maine, it was such a pleasant place to be, especially due to the fact that the town was smaller. Being able to see her best friend in person was a huge bonus as well, it was nice to be able to go and see her at any time and not have to talk to her through emails. 

Piper arched a brow at her statement, taking a moment to consider it. “I suppose we could look into that, I mean, there’s certainly no harm in it. I think it’d be fun to do something like that, though I think some fellow classmates might be entirely freaked out by the story if they end up watching the video.”

Taj laughed at Piper’s suggestion, assuming she was only joking. He was sure his dance moves were far from winning when he tried, and he hadn’t even been trying. He played along, though, replying, “I would have done it already, but I want to give everyone else a chance. You’re not bad, though, have you considered it?”

“Oh, of course,” she joked, shaking her head. “You’d already be the winner after your audition, so it’d hardly be fair to any other contestants.” Piper scrunched her nose slightly, shaking her head once again. “No, not at all. I’d never have the time to be on that show between running a youtube channel, a blog and studying to be a vet tech.”
