ăâżă Â Â Her mother was a hard-working woman that earned her place working with UNICEF Philippines in the health and nutrition division, often going from one barangay to another to help distribute vaccines. While on these travels, she was charmed by a United States soldier whose regiment was working with her team at the time, and they fell in what one could suppose was love. Merely a year later, Ani was born and her father was one of the rare few that was eager to help immigrate them as his time stationed overseas was coming to a close. Using his many accomplishments and credentials, the family snagged an opportunity to have him work at a base in San Antonio while Lilo worked on obtaining citizenship, and they were moved to a small apartment provided by the military. Everything seemed to be going great for the first few years despite the looks given to them while on the street, the ugly whispers in spite of their fatherâs service to this country. They tried their hardest to be âAmericanâ and raise Ani as such, but it never seemed to be enough given their accent, preferences in food, and music of choice, though the little girl got along with the kids in her building.
       One could argue that, for a short while, they were happy⌠yet, it wasnât quite enough since they separated no more than a few years into trying to uphold this perfect image. Lilo ended up rekindling her friendship with Keoni Jameson, her long-ago crush, while revisiting the now-married Nani and David after they immigrated to Hawaii. He was able to pick up the pieces of her heart and brought little giggles and smiles to Ani that her mom couldâve even manage. It wasnât long until he popped the question one day and they were happily wed.
        All seemed fine and dandy for the family and, for the most part, it was. Keoni made his living after retiring from professional skateboarding by coaching the schoolâs varsity swim team, Lilo making it as the head of the chemistry department at a hospital. Even then, Ani seemed to slowly collect more stress with every small spat her parents had, every bad day bottled up and shrugged away with a weary smile. When they soon became big enough to the point that her mom threatened to kick her dad out, she decided to distance herself, busying herself with extra-curricular activities and after-school clubs if not cooped up in her room on her computer in the brief moments she was home. She absorbed herself in a world of writing, of delving deep into YouTube to search for the next song to add to her ever-growing playlist, dreaming of the day she could own her own production company to record her own material and help kick-start othersâ careers.
        Despite attending some of the cityâs best magnet programs for higher learning and finishing her basic education with honors, she found herself in a slump and dropped out in the middle of her first semester at community college. She decided to make a big move, heading north and, for the last three years, remained productive by working at a restaurant, making friends and networking with independent musicians. Ani â now called Alex, finally decided to return to attending classes and plans on supporting themselves through it, putting the same dedication and passion for their job into their schoolwork with hopes of succeeding that longtime dream that their parents think is too big of a risk worth taking.
