What's one memory that you can't seem to get rid of despite how hard you try?
He thought long and hard on the question presented to him and his answer.[âIt is a memory from the war against the Archdragons.â]
He had been serving at a strategically built fort,on the still smouldering frontlines in the midst of the ashen stumps of the archtrees. The fort had been besieged for months, fire and furious slashes of claws raining on the defenders day and night. This battle of attrition slowly turned to the favor of the winged beasts- there simply werenât enough defenders, and they had not seen Lord Gwyn or any of the Four Knights in a very long time. So,after the siegeâs nightly hour long pause, the acting commander ordered that any able bodied or partially disabled defender flee the fort and report back to the closest friendly camp. The Commander and those who were guaranteed not to survive the long distance trip to a friendly camp were given a choice to stay and hold the fort as part of a skeleton crew to cover the otherâs escape.["I remember it clear as glass- the ash from the archtrees was still falling,we were running and carrying others as fast as we could. We just barely got 3 miles before the sound of roaring echoed out. We ran faster after that."]After 6 hours worth of grueling fighting, the fort finally fell- burning to the ground in a blazing hellstorm of dragonfyre.["50 years or so later, there was a fishing village where the fort once stood. I visited the lake and,to my surprise, half buried by a tree was the Commander's burnt helmet. I have it now,in fact. On a shelf in my quarters. Still smells like an odd mix of ash and flowers,though- no matter how much i try cleaning it."]
He nodded once more, and spoke but one simple word in response. [âIndeed.â] He continued to follow, occasionally jolting at the sound of beasts he knew may very well remember his scent. After a few more minutes of walking,he started to prepare some things. Black Firebombs, a few resins (one of which he applied to his wakizashi. The sound of flames errupting rather clearly gave away what it was.) and a flask of Estus. He also lazily waved his katana once or twice, the jumping bolts of lightning amusing him.
It was the flask, knarled and golden in hue which caught the Bladeâs attention. Suddenly, the mystery of this Knightâs identity was all-too-simple to solve: the bearer of this armor, was a human, and Undead at that. If the situation were not as it was, Â perhaps Ciaran would take issue with traveling with the ilk of pygmies - but aid was aid, and the rank of Divines seems as nothing in these lands.
The smaller of Eleum Loyceâs occupants were quickly dispatched by the twin tracers, bearers of the Ice Rapier being slightly more difficult. In the open courtyard, it appeared as if they were pinned. Ciaran would get out, easily, but her companion would most likely not fare as well.
âI feel this will take a bit more.. strategy, on  our parts. You are more familiar with these lands than I am - do you know their numbers in this area?â
He inspected the area, several turns of his body and careful glances made at architecture to jog his memory. [âThey have a gathering place nearby. Usually not many of them, too busy looking for food further inside. If we do get ambushed near here it is more than likely a stubborn runt or two- they try to stay away from the big ones.â] He pointed his smaller blade at the exit to the courtyard, directly oppside of them. [âWe should get moving though. Kill enough of the little ones and the big ones will investigate soon enough.â] He started to take steps towards said door, blades raised in case his memory had failed him and the Greater Beasts were close by.
Dual blades were gripped in tight fists as Ciaran stepped in front of the other. As a Captain, she could not allow herself to follow someone who, in their own land, was a subordinate - it simply did not sit well with her. Heeled boots easily worked through the thin upper layers of snow, black eyes tracing around her.
Three maidens, unmoving in prayer, were the first to be knocked down with throwing knives through the jugular. Screeches, high wails of pain echoed around them in a cacophany, echoed by the gutteral grunts of enemies beyond, mixed with the crunching of frost beneath footsteps. Pause, as she listened -Â
âFour of them. Are you ready?â
A nod of the shining Ivory helmet was the only confirmation given. He advanced with no hesitation, only stepping a few feet before the starving runts attempted to pounce on what they likely assumed was a weak unsead scavenger, come to find trinkets and valuables. The first beast to come close enough soon found its insides open to the cold air- the blade of a katana in its stomach and its companion in the throat of the next challenger. The other beasts proved ever so slightly smarter than their fellows, but no matter how many cuts and gashes they made on him, they all proved to be either superficial or mild at best. Estus truly is a wonderful substance.
After that bout of action, his actions maintained the same streamlined and simple nature: only what is necessary when in danger. His one word of choice for this occasion: [âOnward.â] He cared not of rank- he simply needed to see her through to the end of her trip here, then mabye go hollow out in some crater or house. Assuming he didnât die beforehand, which he thought of as rather detrimental considering what he was trying to achive.

He had been expecting the âswift deathâ,all things considered. He pondered the question for what to him felt like an eternity before he let out his answer- [âI found it in the Kiln of the First Flame, where he lit the fire and burned just like myself and my brethren. When I was there I found both the wrist guard and the blade in a field of flowers, next to me as I lay incapacitated for a reason I still do not know. The blade lay across my chest, the guard half buried in the ash. I know not how they came to be there, but I used them as my own to strike down those who would assail me on my way to this place. But now..â] he paused, musing over whether his next words were wise, before continuing: [âThey are yours. I cannot really keep them from you- they are the last pieces of the Lord left in this world,it is only right for you to have them.â] He handed the wrist guard back- not rushed, but hesitant despite his words. He had awoken from an eternal slumber with these as his tools, a mocking recreation of his entry into the world as a knight of silver. He had grasped a blade as the world awoke, and now he had grasped these things as the world was dying. It all was ratherâŚfitting. [âPerhaps now my service is done. And yetâŚis there anything you might have me do,Sire?â] He still needed something to do,this perhaps imagined last covenant he had carried out was over and now it could not stop him from simply ceasing to exist.
âFor the time being, no⌠Forgive me though, it has been an incredibly long time since I have had to really remember my father. You might well know what happened between us if you had been serving Lord Gwyn that long ago. There are painful memories I usually try to avoid when thinking about our final confrontation.âÂ
After accepting the wrist guard, the god looked over the engravings again and sighed. He gave the accessory to an apostle and told them to take it to his chambers. âLeave it by my journal! As for the rest of you, you may leave as you please. I am sure you still have tasks to do before the sun sets today.â While his words sounded more like a suggestion, the apostles knew their Lord was actually dismissing them. Some still looked concerned about the strange Black Knight, wondering what trouble he might cause once their Lord was left alone with him. They were quickly assuaged by the others, though, the ones who evidently had a little more faith in their Lord. Soon enough, the apostles and serpent-men left. Only an old god and a tarnished knight stood in the hall now with a greatsword in between them.
Gwynfor thought over the knightâs story once more. Evenon had sounded earnest enough. It would be difficult to judge more of the knightâs true character without the removal of his helm, but his story about his⌠rebirth in the ashes of the Kiln⌠If this man was lying about his experiences, then he was doing a wonderful job. Gwynfor still had some doubts, but he realized he couldnât really disprove the knightâs story since he had never been into the Kiln itself. He could barely imagine what it would have been like, the solemn march of the Lord of the Sunlight and his faithful knights to a burning martyrdom. Then there was the Unkindledâs coming back to life? Amidst the ashes of his former comrades no less. Now what service could the god even have Evenon take upon himself? He might now be a Lord himself, but he was no Lord of Sunlight.
âHere,â he finally said. âYou may have this sword back. It may have been my fatherâs weapon, but I have my own.â He gestured to his dear swordspear leaning against the wall. âBesides, what good is a warrior without a weapon? I donât see you carrying anything else, Knight Evenon.â Once he handed off the sword, Gwynfor crossed his arms in thought. âWhen you joined the Lord of Sunlightâs army, how ever long ago it might have been, you might have sworn an oath to destroy all those your former Lord deemed an enemy. Including dragons. Whether you become a Dragon Apostle or a Warrior of Sunlight, Evenon, you will be responsible for protecting dragons here on Archdragon Peak. What do you wish to do?â
It was a long, tense few moments of consideration before he acted. He took the sword,and-with all of his strength- plunged it into the ground beneath his knees, lighting up the sword and warming up the immediate area immensely. With no hesitation,he ripped of his helm and placed it on the handle of the blade. The old, weary looking man sighed and shifted his gaze from his helm to Gwynfor's eyes. ["I wish to rest, first. I cannot make a decision without doubt unless I rest,I'm afriad."] He rubbed his hands over the little fire he had made. ["If you feel you can allow me to rest here, that is."]

He considered his options, then nodded in affirmation. [âIf you can create a distraction I can enter that tower and see what foes lay on its summit to eliminate. I do hope you can keep that ability to go unseen active for a long enough time- being suddenly caught out in the open might spell death for you and me both.â] He glanced at the distance once more, then braced for the long sprint to the tower. [âWhenever you are ready.â]
âI will create the distraction then,â Tyrael said in a hushed tone, before glancing towards his destination. âThey will focus on me, and you can go unnoticed and to the tower. Once I vanish and get to the tower, we can fight them together.â The former archangel nodded before turning to run to the right, holding his right hand up above his handâa bright light shone from his fingers, like a brilliant star. Whatever was in the tower, gave out a loud warning call and many of the creatures, whether it be demons or otherwise, began to file out towards Tyraelâs ever moving position. Miraculously, none noticed the Black Knight. But surely there were still some in the towerâjust a lot of them left to chase a light, like insects.
Tyrael continued to run out, pulling those towards a large natural-looking pillar. His plan was to take cover behind it and then vanish from sight. The demons would surely spend time looking for him!
He took his opportunity to break out in a sprint, breaking towards the tower with sword in hand and pointed forward in what came down to an enhanced bayonet charge to the tower entrance. He bursted through the entrance with the strength expected of one of Gwyn's Finest, skewering an unfortunate Capra that stood in the way. After a small moment of pause to catch his breath,he began a much mire careful advance up the stairs- mindful of the potential for guards in his way further upwards.
bcnneret:
He mused over it for a few short minutes, before nodding his head in acceptance of the offer. [âAn extra blade would help. If you want to follow me on the safe route out,the first objective is quite simply supposedly. We need that tower cleared out for a vantage point, and chances are the demons put something large and decently affective on top to guard it.â] He stared at the rather large and open expanse between them and the tower. [âThat- and actually getting to it unnoticed.â] The many variables worried him,but then again it was the safest path he had seen. He checked himself a few times, and stared out at the expanse once more.
âIâm afraid Iâm not one for sneaking,â Tyrael admitted, his own amber eyes peering across the distance to the tower. âBut I do have the abilityâmagic, as some call itâto go unseen. You, on the other hand,â the former archangel murmured eyeing the heavily armored knight up and down. âIf you require a distraction, perhaps I can create one for you.â
A spark of light flickered in the palm of his hand. âAny way, it will be good enough.â
He considered his options, then nodded in affirmation. ["If you can create a distraction I can enter that tower and see what foes lay on its summit to eliminate. I do hope you can keep that ability to go unseen active for a long enough time- being suddenly caught out in the open might spell death for you and me both."] He glanced at the distance once more, then braced for the long sprint to the tower. The answer came in the form of a small âAh!â and the reveal of a decently sized, burnt wrist guard. One could see its original color was a shining gold, and it had an odd rectangle shape cit at a point in the middle with seemingly no purpose. He grunted and searched for its twin, but after no luck closed the bag and dropped it. He also decided that the sword should be used as well. He jammed its blade into the floor between them, hoping the small embers of flame that ignited when he did so wouldnât be too distracting. [âInspect these,if you would. If you,the son of these items original owner, find them to be fake⌠Well, then you have ample reason to see to my swift death.â]
Son of the original ownerâŚ? Well, alright, now Gwynfor really had to check for the truth in this strangerâs words. He took the wrist guard in one hand and the broadsword handle in the other.
The wrist guard he examined first, it being easy to turn in his hand. Relatively so anyway. Gwynfor could certainly tell the golden band was not meant for human wrists as it felt similar in size and weight as his own. Looking closer, he then noticed similar designs in the engravings, that being of the sun and its numerous rays encircling the accessory. However, there were no swirls of clouds nor curls of light incorporated into the design, something that would have otherwise indicated the band belonging to himself or his siblings. So yes, there was no doubt about it. This wrist band once belonged to the godâs father, Lord Gwyn, the former Lord of Sunlight. Gwynfor swore he could still feel a faint warmth emanating from the gold. Perhaps he was imagining things⌠but he could dwell more on the matter after examining Evenonâs weapon.
While minutes had passed since its ignition, the blade of the broadsword was still radiant, faintlyâ giving off heat and light now. Gwynfor then wondered if this Unkindled had some pyromancy skills to buff his weapon with fire. Few of his fatherâs original knights had practiced such magic though. And the sword was far more delicately engraved and crafted than something only meant for a knight. On the hilt, the was the sun again, its rays also faintly extending down the slightly nicked blade. Gwynfor then returned the wrist guard to Evenon before raising the broadsword into the air, the way he remembered his father doing so before leading battle, and recited the Sunlight Blade miracle.Â
How quickly the blade lit once again! But with lightning instead of fire. The apostles startled at the crackling bolts raining down from their Lordâs hands before he gently brought the sword down and unbuffed the sword with a wave of his hand.
âWell⌠I see that you are not lying, Sir EvenonâŚâ He did not return the broadsword as he had returned the wrist guard. âBut how did you ever come across the Lord of Sunlightâs belongings? Knight or no knight of my fatherâs, I might just as well call you a thief if you canât explain yourself.â
He had been expecting the 'swift death',all things considered. He pondered the question for what to him felt like an eternity before he let out his answer- ["I found it in the Kiln of the First Flame, where he lit the fire and burned just like myself and my brethren.
