LA BEAUTÉ

            She was a queen, meant to look after a kingdom. She was a mother, and her most precious achievement in life was her son. Her only son. And he was about to become king, to shoulder the burdens that came with a crown. Bringing the villain children over, it had been a shock, but Belle had never been more proud in all her life. That didn’t mean she wasn’t concerned. Especially seeing the way he looked at Maleficent’s daughter. He’d introduced her as his girlfriend. granted she’d never thought audrey was a good fit for him.

He had convinced himself he was crazy. Words suddenly appeared all over his skin and there was little to do to explain it. He had not written them, and refused to let anyone see them in fear he was being pranked. Was this one of the servants jokes? He had thought it was, until he watched the writing suddenly appear out of nowhere.

Magic, if it ever existed. Instead of hiding the damn thing, he decided to write back. There was a person on the other side of this writing, and he was damn well going to find out who.

‘Could you stop writing shitty notes?”

     as the words curled onto her skin, she couldn’t help but feel a little offended. had her supposed soulmate just called her notes shitty? were they supposed to do that? it only took her a moment to find a pen from her backpack, taking off the cap with her teeth and holding it there as she responded.

      ‘ they aren’t shitty! they’re very helpful. ‘

“Ah, that explains quite a bit.” He follows with a laugh, short but to the point. Most dream of their soulmate being the one to provide them with a couple of firsts, but with her head stuck in as many books as she references he had to believe she wasn’t quite like the rest. 

His grin doesn’t falter as he moves closer to her, able to see the confused expression spread across her features. Was he now feeling sorry for a girl who had humiliated him in front of his entire crew? Clearly the full moon did much to affect his personality. 

“Can’t say you made the smartest choice darling.”

          her blush depended, and she could feel the heat in them even against the cold night air and the spray from the sea. finally, her gaze dropped from the stars. she didn’t mean to look at him, meant to look anywhere but him. and yet, for just the briefest moment, her view fell to his lips, remembering the taste of the ocean that had been there as she kissed him. 

“Isn’t it a pirate’s job to be mysterious?”

He didn’t expect to share the sentiment with the daughter of an inventor. After the stint she pulled just to get on the boat he should know better than to predict anything she might be capable of. Part of him admired that trait of hers – the part that wasn’t utterly infuriated by it. 

“Do you kiss every man you hate? Seems rather strange.”

         still her eyes were not removed from the stars, and she desperately hoped the moonlight was enough to disguise the rose petal blush on her cheeks. ‘ that was the first time i’ve ever kissed a man. ‘ some girls dreamed of their first kiss, that it would be a kiss of true love and would usher in happily ever after. she had never been quite so idealistic.

It had been made clear as day that she despised Hook with all of her being, so it was safe to say the kiss left him rather shocked. How forceful she had been in a span of a few seconds, willing to show to whole crew she had a mind of her own and planned on using it for her advantage. 

It wasn’t until late that he reappeared from his cabin, finding Belle just where he expected. Standing against the mast staring out at sea as if she had no thoughts left in her mind. 

“I must admit, you’re more of a puzzle than I believed.”

             she had always lived in a small town, a town where nothing changed. and now she had stolen onto a pirate ship and was sailing across the sea. she had wanted adventure in her life, but she had never imagined it would come in this form. she had never imagined-- him. 

             didn’t she hate him? he was selfish and cruel. wasn’t he? except, she had seen him interact with his crew. they were like a family. and she wasn’t sure when her thoughts had changed about him, or why, in the middle of some petty argument, she had thought to kiss him. she couldn’t remember the thought. she could only remember action as she grabbed his jacket and managed to press him against the mast.

There had been plenty of women aboard the Jolly Roger, of course he had allowed those women aboard. Being at sea did a rather strange thing to most men, and what kind of Captain was he not to provide some sort of entertainment for his crew? However, by the looks of the blue fabric peaking out from behind a barrel, he’d think this guest wasn’t welcome on his ship. 

As he pushed the damned thing out of the way he found the same pair of brown eyes staring at him that had been minutes ago. Pleading for him to help her find her father. As he had told many who wished to join him without even a word of what they could do to service his ship in return, he had sent her away claiming women were a token of bad luck on such a ship. He foolishly believed she accepted such a lie.

“Correct me if I’m wrong, but I do believe I told you to get the hell off my ship.”

         as the barrel was pushed aside, a fire lit in her eyes. it was wrong, she knew, to stowaway. it was like stealing. but she had offered to pay him, to do whatever was needed aboard his ship. and he had turned her away with some ridiculous superstition. she needed to find her father. his was the only ship in the harbor that was going in the same direction he’d been. belle was desperate.
