Raven watched intimately as Beastboy ran on the treadmill in front of her; the dumbbells she had in her hands resting on the floor. Her eyes jumping from limb to limb as she watched his body sway and bounce as his muscles bulged with strength as he moved. It was like masterful performed poetry to her; she was watching perfect masculine athleticism in motion. She was so thankful that the other Titans were out of the tower so they couldnât watch her ogle the resident shapeshifter so shamelessly.
It was only when a sharp beep came from the treadmill did Raven jolt out of her reverie and started to grab the dumbbells and started to do more split lunges. Her face flushed red from a mix of her arousing love of Beastboyâs body and embarrassment of almost getting caught. Love spoke to her inside her mind. âYou know you will lose control when we see him growl as he starts lifting weights.â Raven tried to focus on the dumbbells in her hands. âNot the time or the place Love!â She chastised her own desire and passionate romantic emoticlone.
Beastboy took a few deep breaths as he was trying to focus his mind on his exercises and not on the sculpted and beautiful goth in the gym with him. All of his animal instincts were screaming and running wild within him. âWhy are you ignoring her? She is eying us like a prize beast, go and claim her.â Beastboy clenched his fists as he tried to calm himself down as he began to heft several bicep curls. He began to growl as he internally argued with his animal drives as he threw himself into his exercises.
Beastboy closed his eyes tightly as he tried to think of anything, anything in the world other that Raven. But he would soon find himself a victim of the donât think of an elephant principle. His mind was just filled with images as the sounds of her gasping breaths and grunts of determination reached his ears. Her skin hot to the touch and a sheen of sweat coating her body as her face was flush as she sultrily looked at him. The mental sights alongside the very, very real sounds felt like fire and lightning coursing through his entire body. It left him feeling hotter than he had ever felt before at any point in his life.
Raven and Beastboy were left growling and shivering as they were trying their best to control their deep and oh so very hungry desires for each other. The tension continued to grew as their more impulsive and feral inner selves continued to press the issue for both of them.
âCome on! Just take him! Stop being such a coward!â Rage roared as she thrashed around within Ravenâs mind. âHe is a decadent Hercules and I will not be denied!â Raven felt the phantom touches as her control started to slip, as her inner selves began to actively rebel against her. With a cry as she threw down the dumbbells and turned to Beastboy; her chakra shimmered with power as she opened her four eyes. âGar! I want to wrestle.â Rage shouted to him.
She watched as Beastboy shot putted the weights he had onto the other side of the gym. His body growing in sheer size as he turned around to face Rage as she possessed Raven; his eyes turned a clear white as he snarled at her. âAll you had to do was ask.â Before he launched at her and slammed her into the floor. The fight was on; Raven and Garfield truly gave away to their feral and wild natures.
Blows were exchanged in savage speeds as they shifted and moved throughout the entirety of the gym; from boxing to breaking arm bars and leg locks to lashing out with clawed nails against each other. The energy was heightening as they eyed each other like they were predators stalking prey in the wilds. With one savage push they launched at each other and grappled and pulled each other down onto the matt of the boxing ring of the gym.
There; fury gave way to lust and hunger of a far more intimate variety.
Clawed fingers cut through the remaining pieces of laundry as they sought to get their skin to touch. Moans and growls passed between each other as they kissed deeply and held so tightly on their taut and sculpted bodies. Raven loved how he clawed up and down her back, leaving her shuddering and mewling as she kissed and bit into his neck. Garfield shivered with anticipation as the growing want for things to spill further and go wilder. With all of this, the battle for who was leading and who was being led continued; with then rolling over and constantly pinning the other beneath him.
âThis is all I have wanted since I saw you.â Raven whispered to Beastboy. âAll that muscle, packed so tightly in those shorts.â She finished as she nibbled and bit down on his lips. Her actions and words were punctuated as she rolled her hips to tease her jade beau on purpose.
She then felt herself fall backwards as Beastboy pinned her down. âI think we can finally stop playing. Weâre both ready and piping red hot.â He purred as he took in the sight of the woman he utterly loved with a smirk of satisfaction. He was only momentarily surprised as a portal opened up beneath Raven; they found themselves no longer in the ruined gym, but in her bedroom.
âWe are finished fighting; I think we can take all this feral energy for something we can both thoroughly enjoy.â She teased.
âYou want the truth? I was just trying to make it last until prom.â
âWhat?â And here heâd thought Raven was perfectly happy with her super-tall boyfriend.
âI knew it was doomed. I just wanted a proper prom night with a boyfriend. But he couldnât even do that for me.â
If she was any other girl heâd be touching her shoulder right now. âYou wouldnât have enjoyed prom with a crappy guy anyway,â he said sensibly.
âMaybe,â she replied immediately. âMaybe memory would have smoothed everything over and looking back I would think I enjoyed the night.â
âââ
[Saturday, 11:32 am. 6 hours and 28 minutes to Prom.]
They were at Raven Rochâs house, and that pissed Gar off beyond words. She was his sworn enemy, and heâd almost made it through all of high school having no idea where she livedâand now he was in her territory.
No one else seemed to care. Dick and Victor were both avoiding his meaningful glances and potent sullennessâVic was his ride, and Gar lived on the edge of town. He was trapped here until they decided to leave.
Kori, sweet Kori, his piece-of-sunshine friend who Gar would do anything for, was the reason they were here. A day before prom, she was still fretting over which hair accessory to submit to the hairdresser to complete her outfit. They had been hanging out at the mall when it had suddenly occurred to her she needed the opinion of her newest female friend. Hence, to Ravenâs house they went. No matter Garâs protests.
Raven being more or less in Garâs group of friends was a relatively recent development. She had always been tangentially around them âVic tutored her in Math and he said she was funny, which, fine, Gar had a low opinion of Vicâs sense of humor anyway; she was on AP Literature with Dick, and he said she was the kind of kid who looked intimidating but was just serious and actually pretty nice to talk to, which Gar would believe when he saw it- but her hanging out with them had only started when Kori had begun to work at that clothing store with her. Kori had attached to Raven fast, and one day Gar had turned around and suddenly Raven was there, among his friends. No one had asked him if he was fine with it.
And he wasnât! He had good reason to hate her. Sheâd always been callous and carelessâshe stomped over peopleâs feelings like they werenât real. Heâd known her since preschool ânot known known her, but sheâd always there. They had grown up around each other, and sheâd always been like that.
But the real feud had started two years before. They had been on a class trip to the fair. Heâd declared he was getting Terra, his crush and almost-girlfriend at the time, the biggest plushy they had. A crowd had gathered as he managed it; it had been a glorious moment, and then Raven had said, as he gave Terra the prize, âA giant chicken. That must be the luckiest girl in the world.â Even Terra had laughed, and it had ruined whatever effect his achievement had had. That had been his first and last chance to impress Terra, who had since moved away. His first love, gone. Heâd written two songs about it.
âIn this one the colors match the dress better,â Kori was telling Raven. âBut this one is so delicate, and a classic.â
Victor and Dick both scrolled through their phones on Ravenâs bedroom floor. It was the same deliberation Kori had been stuck with all morning.
Raven sat on her vanity dresser with two fingers cupping her chin. âThe teal one,â she stated, so certain Dick looked up to see how it would float with Kori. Raven had offered more certainty in a second than the three boys all morning.
âReally?â Kori returned, eyes wide. âBut the silver oneâŚâ
âIs a safe choice. And it ages you.â
âIt does!?â
Gar was appalled. The roughness of her tone pushed him over the edge. âGod, whyâd you have to be such a hater? She looks pretty either way.â
The outburst made everyone look at him, given the fact it was first time he spoke all afternoon.
âExcuse me?â returned Raven.
âIâm saying you donât have to be mean.â
âIâm not,â Raven stated. âIâm trying to help her.â
Kori moved to agree. âGar, I asked for her opinion, sheâs helping me as a friend.â
âShe didnât have to be a jerk about it,â Gar sustained, crossing his arms.
Dick, closest to him, bumped him on the arm, wordlessly telling him to knock it off.
And there, proof the enmity was real and mutual, was how quickly Raven turned to big guns when she said, âI donât know what your problem is with me, but no oneâs forcing you to be here.â
Vic spoke up. âRaven, donât listen to him, he speaks without thinking, ever.â
Gar was perhaps more offended by Vicâs dismissal than Ravenâs affront. âI mean what I said. And Iâd leave if I could,â he told Raven. âVicâs my ride and heâs ignoring me.â
Raven set her questioning gaze on Victor.
Vic offered a tremulous smile. âIâll just take him home.â
Dick saw them outside, and lingered by the porch door. âGuys, Iâm gonna wait for Kori.â
ââKay. Iâm gonna put this baby down for a nap,â replied Vic, and gave Gar a strong hack in the back as they left the premises of the enemy.
Gar didnât care. One way or another, he was out of Ravenâs house, and he counted that as a win.
âââ
As Vic pulled up before Garâs door, he said, âLast chance, youâre really not going to our prom?â
âDuh, Iâm going to the prom my dateâs at,â Gar replied, face brightening at the thought of tonight.
Vic snorted. âSome date,â he muttered, but Gar just closed the car door on him, pretending he hadnât heard.
He refused to think badly about tonight. Sure, he hadnât actually asked out his date, or she him; sure, it had been arranged by his new friends from Terrance High, who had finally let him into his group after months of effort in befriending their unofficial leader Terry while they both worked the cinema candy counter; sure, he hadnât ever seen Angelica before, except once at a distance because she was angry at one of the boys and was keeping away from them where they could still see her.
But a date was a date. Heâd rather go to a different schoolâs prom than show up to his own dateless. In his room, he beamed at the suit hanging on his wardrobe doorand did the check for the hundredth time: suit, shirt, tie, corsage. All ready. He wouldnât let anything ruin tonight.
âââ
[Friday, 6pm. 1 hour to Prom.]
Right from the start Gar could tell something was wrong. The Terrance group pre-gamed at a weird sleazy bar-slash-gym called Dark Side Club Gar had never known existed in town before, where Angelica had taken one look at him and her mouth had twisted, and Gar had known she found him disappointing. Now she faced away from him as he awkwardly chatted along with the others, left to wonder what heâd done wrong. Was it his suit? He had gotten it on sale, but could people actually tell? Could girls? Or was it he was a head shorter than her? He also wished he couldâve fixed that, but there was nothing he could do if his promised growth spurt hadnât happened by the end of high school. Had she changed her mind about him? Had she ever wanted to go to prom with him in the first place? Everyone else seemed to think it was funny, smirking when Gar would talk and Angelica would blank him or talk over him.
After an awkward hangout, destiny was sealed when they left the Club and Angelica suddenly turned to Gar and asked him to get her chips from the convenience store across the street. Gar, eager to please and elated she had acknowledged him, jumped at the request.
He probably did feel the foreboding as he chose the chips and stood in line; there had to be a reason he wouldnât look out the window while he chatted with the cashier and paid.
When he left the store, the car was gone.
It didnât surprise him as much as it should have. He had sensed the odd energy,seen the smirks, the runaway glances. He had thought it was odd his date had suddenly talked to him after a night of ignoring him. He wasnât surprised. Or maybe the big gaping hollowness on his chest didnât leave room for anything else, surprise included.
Had they planned it from the start? Had it been a spur of the moment cruelty of Angelicaâs? It didnât really matter. It still meant Gar would have a senior prom-shaped hole in his life.
âââ
He didnât really mind where his feet took him. He really should have. Because the next time he looked up, his eyes fell on a girl sitting on a bench at the end of the sidewalk. The fact that she was dressed to the nines in a pretty flowy back dress caught his attention first. The fact that he recognized her came second.
Raven had been looking at her phone. If Gar hadnât made a choked sound in surprise, she might not have seen him. But he did, and she did, and Gar saw her face freeze in a way that must mirror his.Of all people, he thought, it has to be you that sees this.
Ravenâs face went through changes he didnât understand: she looked away, then back at him, did a double take and looked him up and down, only then seeming to notice his suit. âAre you⌠walking to prom?â
Gar coughed. âIâm⌠my plans fell through.â He shoved hands in pockets, tried to look nonchalant. âI was going to the Terrance High prom with a group, butâŚâ he shrugged vaguely, having no idea how sheâd interpret that. Was he playing heâd lost interest in prom and walked away? He had no idea what his story was. This was too raw for him to pull an act over it.
âOh? Did you pick a senseless fight with them too?â
And he was too raw to mask the effect of her jab on his face.
âWhat about you?â he said, to throw the onus on her. âDidnât you have a boyfriend? Where is he? Itâs past seven.â
Gar didnât immediately understand when her eyes widened in a vulnerable expression he was unprepared to see in her; when she looked down, it hit him. Oh. Oh no. He hadnât thought he was witnessing someone being actually stood upâheâd thought her date was late.
He had been so focused on her witnessing his embarrassment he hadnât realized heâd walked into hers.And he thought she was callous.
He decided honesty was the best policy. âSorry⌠I said it because I thought you were waiting to be picked up.â
âI am,â she said.
He didnât know if she was trying to save face or she truly thought her boyfriend might still show up.
âDid you have a fight?â he asked. Why was he trying to comfort Raven Roch?
âNo, Michael isâŚâ She paused. Her tone was dry and detached when she completed, âYou want the truth? I was just trying to make it last until prom.â
âWhat?â And here heâd thought Raven was perfectly happy with her super-tall boyfriend.
âI knew it was doomed. I just wanted a proper prom night with a boyfriend. But he couldnât even do that for me.â
If she was any other girl heâd be touching her shoulder right now. âYou wouldnât have enjoyed prom with a crappy guy anyway,â he said sensibly.
âMaybe,â she replied immediately. âMaybe memory would have smoothed everything over and looking back I would think I enjoyed the night.â
She said that like sheâd given it some thought, done the math and concluded a crappy date was better than nothing. Like Angelica was for him. Both of them were two unlucky kids whoâd settled for the date they could find for senior prom. He sat next to her on the bench, where he deflated. âSo are you gonna wait for him?â
She made a low grumble. âProbably gonna sneak back home. I donât feel like explaining this to my mom.â
Gar kicked a rock with the point of his shoe for a moment, before he took a deep breath in preparation to say the obvious thing. âRaven. Fuck it. Letâs go to prom.â And he barreled over before her shocked face could deter him. âThis is ridiculous, weâre all dressed up, what are we gonna do? Go to bed? Letâs go to prom.â
âWith you?â she replied. âAnd you with me? We canât stand each other, weâll have a terrible time.â
âMaybe. Or maybe memory will make you think you were super into me.â
She looked insulted at the thought. He winked, just because. He was elated to see her blush.
She crossed her arms. âIâd rather go to bed.â
âRaven, weâre seniors. This is our last chance to do prom at our school, with our friends, with our classmates. Theyâre all already there.â
âSays the guy who was perfectly fine going to another schoolâs prom until recently,â she pointed out.
âYeah, well, this event has humbled me and shown me the error of my ways, now come on, letâs go.â And he stressed his words by jumping to his feet and daring to pull on her arm. She shook him off immediately. âLook, my tieâs got little birds on it and your dress has those feathery things,â he said, holding up his tie and gesturing to the feather-shaped tulle accents on her dressâ cap sleeves. âItâs fucking fate, dude!â
She focused on his tie. She hadnât noticed the tiny black birds on a dark green background before. âWhy the hell does your tie have birds?â
âIt was the cutest thing with animals on it my mom said was still elegant enough for the dress code.â He tucked the tie back in as if to shake her eyes off it. âLook, the tieâs not important, what Iâm saying is if we go together, itâll look right.â
âGreat argument. You so convinced me.â
âIf you donât cool it with the sarcasm Iâll just take you at face value and drag you along.â
âHow are we gonna get there, genius?â she posed. âWe both lost our rides and the school is miles away. And prom started long ago.â
But he acted like sheâd said what he wanted to hear. âRideâs your problem? Cool, Iâm calling a cab.â
Raven watched him pull out his phone, mark the number, and put the phone to his ear. He waited for the call to connect with a determined look on his face, and she finally realized he was serious. And, well, Raven had always been a path-of-least-resistance kind of girl. But he would not be getting a cab on prom night.
Gar started when she put her hand over his arm. âWait. I can get us a ride.â
âââ
[7:52 pm. Minus 52 minutes to prom.]
Ravenâs available ride was her neighbor Azar, who was seventy years old and perfectly willing to help out, but warned the kids she wasnât used to driving at night and would take it slow and safe. The frenzied teenagers assured her this was fine.
Azar drove so slowly it gave Raven time to regret things ten times over. She was about to say something âanythingâsomething like âThis is so dumb,â something that would cast Gar back down to Earth too, something that would make them look at each other and realize they should just go home-, but Gar was on an entirely different wavelength. When Raven looked over at him, he was hard at work trying the car lights in different combinations; the ceiling light, then the ones over each of the back seats, then both, the just the left one. She was about to ask what he was doing when he took out his phone, set it on frontal camera and scooted closer to her side.
âWhat the hell are you doing?â she asked.
âIâm scared youâre gonna push us past the photo booth when we get there, so Iâm taking control of the situation.â
He took a picture. Raven had just enough time to see her own floored face staring back at her, next to Garâs smile with the tooth sticking out. Gar checked the picture with a smile and put his phone back.
âYouâre not gonna tell me to smile?â Raven asked.
âNah. This is more true to life,â he declared.
For some reason, that was strangely heartwarming to her. No one easily accepted her resting bitch face in photos. It was nice to not have to fight someone on this. Raven felt some of her doubt slip away. Maybe this wouldnât be so bad.
âââ
Never mind. It was bad.
Why was everyone staring at them? Was it that weird sheâd showed up with the class clown? Was everyone wondering where her boyfriend was? Did everyone even know she used to have a boyfriend? Raven had personally made it through high school ignoring ninety percent of her classmates, but kids sheâd never talked to were now staring at her like they had strong opinions about her. She wanted to crawl into a hole.
âTheyâll stop staring in two minutes,â came Garâs voice next to her. âTake it from the class clown. Peopleâs attention doesnât last.â
Maybe it was because they were among their classmates now, but having Gar next to her, whispering to her, made Raven feel⌠weird. It felt intimate in a way that⌠wasnât entirely unwelcome. Maybe it was because she felt they were a team against the rest of themâand sheâd never been in a team that included Gar Logan.
Their friends spotted them before Gar and Raven located them. The unlikely couple approached their puzzled friends, and on reaching them, Gar simply said ââSup. We had a change of heart.â
Koriâs face hardened as she set a knowing gaze on Raven. âMichael?â
âYep,â said Raven.
âTell me youâre breaking up with him.â
âOh yeah. Tomorrow, when he shows up with flowers all apologetic⌠Iâm gonna dump him.â
In turn, Vic crossed his arms at Gar. âThe Terrance High losers pulled something on you, didnât they?â
Gar furrowed his brows at Vic. âNope, I decided to blow them off.â And before Vicâs anger could reach him, he pulled Ravenâs hand. âCâmon, Raven, letâs dance.â
âââ
Gar was right, people were long done staring as they danced, even though they were a bigger spectacle now: they had come just in time for the slow songs.
âYouâre happy we came, right?â Gar asked her.
âYeah, I am,â she replied sincerely.
His face brightened at the response. âSee? Sometimes itâs better to do things than⌠not do them.â
âCouldnât have said it better myself,â she stated, with an edge on her voice.
But her sarcasm didnât rub him the wrong way anymore. He didnât know why, but he felt he understood her better now. In fact, as she swayed before him with a relaxed look on her face, he struggled to remember why he had ever disliked her.
Gar looked past her head and only then saw the big sign on the wall and remembered the theme of the dance: âDate with destinyâ.
Huh. He tried very hard not to take in the subtext.
But was it dumb to take this for the big movie ending? To think this might last and, come Monday, they would keep⌠getting along, at least? Was this just for tonight? Just because he was the only prom date alternative around? Could this keep going? Maybe⌠evolve?
Raven suddenly cast her eyes down, and Gar internally panickedâhad some of what heâd been almost thinking translated into his face? Before he could even process it himself?
She had just shrugged off a bad boyfriend, he reminded himself. It wasnât the time anyway.
He shouldnât even be thinking of big what-ifs, but⌠friendship. Friendship was good enough for him. He didnât have to know now where this was going. This morning, did he think he would be slow dancing with Raven Roch by the end of the day? Absolutely not. So he didnât have to know now. He could be in the moment and wait for what the future held.

SUMMARY:Â Of all the things not to do at your friendsâ engagement party, Raven figured hooking up with your other friend in a broom closet was probably near the top of the list.
**IMPORTANT NOTE** - Todayâs submission features mature content. Please do not click the read more if you are uncomfortable with sexual content. If you are okay with it being referenced but would prefer a lack of detail, you can stop reading where Gar says âIâm gameâ and resume reading where he says âSoâŚhow about that?â for a sort of fade-to-black effect.Â
The characters are, of course, aged-up.
It was becoming exceedingly difficult to catch him alone. Not that that had been Ravenâs plan for the night â her strategy, for the past six months at least, had been strictly avoidance. They were still friends, she thought. They were definitely still teammates. They got the job done and done well enough that â despite all his skeptical glances in their direction â Dick had never pulled them aside for mediation. She didnât hate Gar. And she knew from the pangs of embarrassment that rolled off him whenever she was near that he didnât hate her either.
But what did that count for? It was easy not to hate someone. Everything else was much cloudier.
Right now, she was watching him from a dark corner of the hotel ballroom Dick and Kori (or, rather, one Mr. Wayne) had rented for their engagement shower. In the years that followed what the Titans had reverently termed âthe Terra situation,â Gar had thrown himself headlong into philanthropy. It was the only thing that gave his life meaning, by his own admission. The rest of the team had to make a pretty concerted effort to pretend that this pronouncement hadnât stung â wasnât the power of friendship good enough anymore? â but Raven saw through it. It was challenging to hide these sorts of things from an empath. He loved them all very much. He loved herâ
But she couldnât think about that now. Â Â Â Â
At the present moment his reputation for community service found him surrounded by a gaggle of beautiful women who were competing with one another for his attention. Azar, who were these people? If theyâd scored an invite to a private soiree in honor of the Boy Wonder, they had to be personalities of some sort. Journalists? Artists? Models, probably. Raven suppressed a snort. Go figure; Gar attracted bombshells everywhere he turned.
She cringed at herself, her grip on her champagne flute tightening. Just because these women were confident and outgoing enough to flirt openly with the man sheâd fumbled didnât mean they were worthy of her disdain.
      It also didnât mean she had to like watching it.
      The cocktail waitress swung by as if on cue, prompting Raven to pluck a new flute from the tray. She felt absurd doing it. Sheâd seen this sort of thing in films, but it felt comically out-of-place here in Jump City. This whole ordeal was ridiculously lavish.
      "Cheers,â she slurred to herself, "to glass number whatever.â
      It was probably a good time to admit to herself that she was getting drunk.

SUMMARY:Â ââYou ruined my date,â Raven barks at him, defeat gradually overtaking her anger. 'A date,â Gar murmurs thoughtfully, then shrugs. 'I didnât know it was a date.â"Â
      âMaybe this was a mistake,â Ravenâs date says to her, looking down at his burger with disdain. She lifts her gaze at this, perhaps a bit too hopefully. Dating is not her scene. Sheâs tried it a few times, even getting as far as the fifth date with one contender, but in the end they all left her disinterested. Noah, the charmingly nerdy literature student she bumped into at the bookstore, is â unfortunately â no exception. While the date started off well enough, with the two of them perusing a local art gallery and discussing their latest reads, Raven hasnât felt any notable chemistry. Any chance of him echoing her sentiments and cutting the date short is a win in her book. But then he prods at the burger bun and glances over at her with amusement, and she realizes that heâs only talking about the food. She hides her deflation with a well-placed polite smile.
      âNo, you know what they say about nondescript diner beef,â Raven says, examining her own order: a coffee and a simple side of french fries. âItâs the best. World-renowned.â
      âWhose world?â her date quips, and she canât help a genuine smile at that one. Itâs not that Noah is a bad guy. Heâs perfectly adequate. And nice. Too nice, even. Too human. Too normal.
      Heâd absolutely cave the first time he saw her soul-self or a stray demon, and, taking chances as she is â learning to love and baring her soul and all that crap â Raven doesnât have time for the weak. If sheâs doing this, she needs someone who can handle her. All of her. Someone who is more intimately acquainted with dark magic, or at least with superheroes. Someone who can take her outbursts in stride and read her body language to know when she needs time alone. Someone more likeâ
      âShit.â Ravenâs eyes widen slightly as she takes in the green face smiling back at her from the dinerâs front window.
Within the centre of Hell stood a magnificent palace; fashioned from gold and silver with all manner of precious stones of gargantuan sizes embedded upon its walls. Deep within the ornate chambers and over-the-top material decadence of the structure sat a lone room fashioned from stone and wood. There within that dark chamber sat the ruler of all of the Hells; the demon queen Raven. Her body having long since changed from when she was a hero upon Earth; four horns adorned her head, two spiralled upwards, two curled downwards and hung either side of her head. Her skin was no longer pale but a shocking blood-red colour and tone, she had four eyes that glowed like embers and a large swaying tail with jagged barbs that ran down it.
In one hand she held a bowl filled with water, she ran a fingertip across the rim of the vessel and focused her mind as strongly as she could. âGarfield; show me the man I love.â Raven commanded as the water started to violently ripple, almost to the point of spilling from the bowl; before calming and showing Raven the image that she desired.
Garfield looked so much older than she last remembered; hair thinning and greying, wrinkles long set into his face as he weakly moved, it almost brought Raven to tears. She had been dragged into Hell shortly after their children turned eighteen; now she was seeing that she had lost the better part of a life with the man of her dreams. A dream she may never experience ever again.
The bowl was cast aside without a care as Raven shot to her feet, she needed to see him even just one last time oh how she had longed to hear his voice. Holding both of her hands up and clenched them tightly as she pulled them down; a portal slowly was forced into existence before her. Not wanting to waste any more time, she walked into it.
Raven strode gently onto a well-manicured lawn of a simple looking home with a white-picket fence in the middle of suburban America. The wind and temperature once familiar now felt weird and alien over her skin; her heart jumped from in her chest into her throat and back again as she looked at the Logan family home.
âItâs as if nothing has changed⌠It looks just how I remember it.â She whispered as she mentally forced her feet to move towards the front door. She couldnât risk wasting time, she could only be away from her current position for only a few moments. Hell took a world of strength and stamina to keep in check and maintain and to keep her underlings and the former Dukes of Hell in line and their work above board.
âBut I just have to see him⌠I missed so much; I canât miss this⌠I just canât.â She thought as she wrapped her knuckles against the wood of the red front door. Raven tried to ignore the blood-red colour of her body and the fully-formed horns that arched and spiralled off of her forehead or how her barbed tail swayed with anxiety. After what felt like an eternity passed the lock clicked free and the door was swung open; Raven peered down into the face of her sombre and quiet son; Adam. The thin young man and artist she remembered was long gone; in his place stood a heavily-tattooed long-haired and bearded bulky man who was well into the middle of his life.
âShould you be away from the office?â Adam asked softly, sternly looking his mother in the eye, judgement and stoicism set firmly in his face.
âI should have an hour or so before the Dukes realise that I am not there⌠I just want to see him; just one last time.â Raven pleaded with her son.
âIâve been hearing Banshees all day, the hours at hand.â Adam spoke bluntly before standing aside. âEdenâs a wreck, when she sees you, sheâll lose it.â
âI had too, I never wanted too; but without someone at the centre of it all.â Raven said, a statement she had said to others and to herself over and over for the many years of the many decades. Pressure and emotions welling up inside her as the enormity of time was being made apparent to her.
âI know, Lucifer skipped town; the dukes of Hell go into an all-out war.â Adam spoke quietly. âThe universe was at stake and the Children of Trigon got pulled into it; you came out victorious. But being the ruler of Hell is tiring and a constant you canât really leave.â Adam spoke with understanding as he led his mother through the house; Raven could see items and photos of events and memories she was never there to help create. It only twisted the knife in her heart all the more. Until the pair came to an all-too-familiar door; the door to the master bedroom.
âDad never remarried after you left. Said he couldnât betray you like that.â Adam said softly before he opened the door.
Raven saw her daughter Eden who had her makeup running as she fought back sobs as silent tears fell down her cheeks. Like Adam, she had grown and changed from when she last saw her; crowsâ feet around her eyes, studded piercings in her ears and nose and the fading image of athleticism of her physique. But, still as beautiful and as strong as Raven always remembered her being.
âI-is that Raven?â A croaky and sickly voice struggled to ask. The momentary silence that followed that question was deafening to Raven. She never knew Garfield to be ill or sickly; her last memory of him was a loud, energetic and loving man. The current queen of Hell shyly shuffled to Garfield Loganâs deathbed. That was when Eden turned to see her mother and lost control.
âWHY ARE YOU HERE!? WHY!? YOU ABANDONED US!â Eden screamed out before she was held back by her brother. The broken-hearted anguish and pain filled her voice as Eden tried to break free and hit her mother.
âI didnât want to⌠I, I wanted to be here.â Raven weakly offered as tears started to spill from her own eyes. Knowing that she had no choice and seeing the utter rage and agony on her daughterâs face broke her heart all over again.
âWhyâd you⌠why? I needed youâŚâ Edenâs anger gave way as she saw her own motherâs shame and grief.
âHell was spilling over; all reality was at risk⌠I got pulled in because of my father and siblings. Eden⌠Sweety I had no choice⌠It was either me or you and Adam.â Raven broke into flowing tears. âI-I-I couldnât do that to either of you!â Raven wailed as she fell to her knees. She saved her children from a violent war, to being stuck and alone within Hell; and yet she still managed to do them harm.
âDonât cry⌠I never liked seeing you cry momma.â Garfield croaked out as he struggled to pull himself up in his bed. âIâm just happy to see you.â Garfieldâs words were interrupted by hacking coughs before he continued. âEven if it is for the last time.â
âThe cosmos stole my life with you, Iâll be damned if it takes our final moment as well.â Raven stated with an uneven voice. âEven now, everything feels alien; like just yesterday we were almost forty and the kids were getting ready for college. I lost so much time with you and with them.â Raven took and unsteady breath as she knelt by her husbandâs side. âI want to keep you in my heart forever⌠but I know I canât.â
âStop sounding like I am dyingâŚâ Garfield tried to inject some gallows humour to his last hurrah. âOnce I go to the next world wouldnât weâŚâ He trailed off a little. Raven didnât have the words and simply shook her head. âBut why?â Garfield pressed.
âYouâre not going to Hell⌠and where you are going; I canât follow. I had you for a blessed twenty years and now⌠Now I get robbed of you for an eternity.â
âSell me something.â Garfield said simply.
âW-what? Sell you something. Gar⌠I donât understand.â Raven was confused and distraught and had no clue what Garfield was playing at.
âIf you offer me something, I could⌠I could sell my soul. Then weâd get to spend eternity together.â Garfield elaborated.
âYou sweet, sweet fool.â Raven said as she held onto his hand. âThatâs not how that works⌠itâs never worked like that.â She paused. âI could never condemn you into suffering or deny you the paradise you rightly deserve. Iâll just have to hold onto memories tighter.â
âB-but what about our happy ending?â He asked dumbly.
âNot everyone gets a happy ending; sometimes we just get endings.â Raven plainly answered. âBut, enough talks about cheating the cosmos⌠tell me about your life, about all your lives.â Raven turned to her children as well. âThis very well be the last time I see any of you; the last time the Logan family has a get together.â She broke down into tears as that sentiment felt so, so much more real than she ever expected it would.
The time Raven had left with her family was spent regaling about old memories, achievements, tragedies, beauty and loss. She learned she was a grandmother to four beautiful girls and two handsome boys; learned how difficult it was for Eden to build a mock volcano for her daughterâs science fair, how Adam loved his wife until cancer claimed her life. How Garfield helped and aided his children again and again in their times of need; never asking for anything in return. It truly was a rollercoaster of emotions; tears flowed freely and with abundance until finally.
None of them had noticed at first until they turned to ask him a question about some blink and youâll miss it memory. Garfield Logan had passed away; surrounded by his loving wife Raven and his two children Adam and Eden. He died with a smile on his face while looking back on a lifetime well lived. The room was filled with a stillness as Adam closed his fatherâs eyes; all the emotion was drained from the room.
âI cannot stay any longer; I have to keep Hell under control⌠I apologise if I canât visit you both again.â Raven said weakly.
âWe understand; got to keep the cosmos balanced.â Adam said.
âShow em why youâre the best.â Eden warbled as painful new tears found their way onto her face.
With that Raven made her way out of the house and home she lived and loved in for twenty years and opened a portal to her dark, quiet chamber and fell onto her bed and wept.
There had always been something that felt wrong about keeping or maintaining a secret; but Beastboy couldnât deny that the secret he and Raven had felt so wickedly good. They were in a relationship; a romance that fell together not from great forethought or potent revelations, but of an awkward admission by a rock near the sea after a long, long night.
They didnât feel comfortable admitting their connection and love for one another for many reasons; one being the emotional pressure as it could have been possibly too much for Raven to handle. Another was neither feeling ready to be subjected to the often-excessive lectures and warnings from their leader, Nightwing. Or stat having Starfire and Cyborg inviting themselves to activities that they wanted to do by themselves.
So, they came up with the secret; each would come up with reasons to get out of the Tower and once out of sight, out of mind they would meet up for the romantic ventures. Sometimes they would just get coffee and watch the sunset over the bay; other times they would go to the Jump City Memorial Theatre for plays and concerts. Whenever they got an idea for a small get away or adventure; they would discuss it and start to plan on how they were going to put distance from their friends and team mates.
Beastboy just smiled at all the thoughts and memories of their deeply passionate and personal romance as he held Ravenâs hand; watching the sunrise on a mountain-side. âThis truly is something special.â He spoke softly to Raven.
âLike watching the heavens split open as the world and all that is above join once more.â Raven whispered as clouds and morning fog parted allowing the rays of blues, pinks and yellows to streak across the sky. Her smile paused as a thought flittered into her mind and she turned to look up to Beastboy. âHow come you havenât pushed for this to be a public relationship?â
âYou said you wanted this on the down-low; quiet because emotional noise can overwhelm you.â Beastboy answered simply. âI love you deeply and know how overwhelming emotional noise can be, especially after Queen Marionette swapped our bodies.â He squeezed her hand gently. âI wonât pressure or push you until youâre good and ready. When it comes to becoming a public couple like Starfire and Nightwing you lead, Iâll follow.â
The thoughtful and well-intentioned response soothed any potential anxieties the sorceress could have developed. âThank you for that.â She kissed his cheek and snuggled into his arms as they watched the birds fly overhead and the clouds clear. Just enjoying each otherâs silent company and the panoramic beauty of nature unfolding before them. Before silently flying back towards their home; Titans Tower.
~Meanwhile at the Tower~
âIâm telling you it doesnât add up. The last few months I had a program running GPS triangulation after the last invasion of the Tower. Exactly how it was discussed at the team emergency meeting.â Cyborg exclaimed looking at the coordinate data spreads for the resident shapeshifter and sorceress with Starfire and Nightwing behind him. âThey end up in the same location for hours on end; despite massively different reasons for being out of the Tower.â
âAre you suspecting that there is a problem occurring between our friends?â Starfire quietly inquired.
âWhatever is happening it could become a detriment to the team; I think we need to go to their location immediately.â Nightwing stated.
âBut there could be a perfectly normal explanation for their prolonged and isolated bonding. We often bond in isolation, despite my requests to incorporate the far more liberating Tamaranian approach to romance.â Starfire responded, smirking at her lover as he turned a deep shade of red.
âTheyâre a complicated pair, her emotional sensitivities and his animalistic primeval impulses. Maybe this is a release valve practise; he stays constantly shapeshifting, not thinking and exerting energy and she gets nothing but the emotional white noise.â Cyborg quickly countered, trying to avoid learning more about his leaderâs and teammateâs love life.
âThat doesnât explain the constant visits to the Jump Memorial Theatre and Desert Candy: Games and Hobbies. One is massively popular art performance venue and the other is from reports a tabletop roleplaying game enthusiast shop.â Nightwing critiqued Cyborgâs answer.
âWay to make theatre of the mind sound so dweeby.â Cyborg joked before returning to the spreadsheet of data. âI mean what if Star is right? What if they are just in a super-secret romance?â Cyborg posited.
âI wasnât exactly positing that; I was positing that they were friends with benefits; but a romance could also easily explain their time together.â Starfire said bluntly.
âHaving sex ⌠in a game shop!?â Nightwing questioned with incredulity.
âBoth are quiet, neat and upstanding citizens with deeply complicated emotional needs. What is that Earth saying? Itâs always the shy, quiet ones that are the freakiest.â Starfire smirked with satisfaction at how she had proved her own point.
Cyborg coughed before saying very quickly. âWell; that speculation aside⌠I think I am just going to video call BB. Because he should be at the arcade, like he said he would be so shouldnât have an issue answering.â
âIf he does?â Nightwing prodded.
âWe wait; any of the proposed theories work, symbiotic cognitive/empathic release valve, friends with benefits indulging and enjoying each other or a beautiful fashioned and growing romance. We have no information that posits that they are at risk or in any danger or threat.â Starfire stated. âMaybe call again in ten minutes.â
âWe simply confront them when they return to the Tower; gently.â Cyborg answered Nightwing. âUnaccounted for time could pose a safety risk to the Tower or the Titans Network. If any of the aforementioned reasons is why theyâre doing this. They can tell us and be a little more honest about where they are and who theyâre with.â The cybernetic hero finished before releasing a big breath.
âIf it was a romance, how would we have all missed the signs?â He asked looking to Starfire and Nightwing.
âA combined effort; they both know what we view as normal and were able to duplicate that easily as to avoid us noticing their private enounters.â Starfire stated.
âWe only know that it was happening after Quicksave, Corruptorix and their leader Red Ring invaded the Tower and tried to destroy the Titans Network and steal Cyborg three months ago.â Nightwing pointed out. âHad that not happened; we wouldnât have had the data that proved they were even together.â
âMaybe that was by design. They are private people who struggle with how people respond to them.â Cyborg nodded along.
âIt was.â A soft voice rang out into the comms room, causing the three heroes to jump into the air. Seeing Beastboy and Raven
âI guess the secret is out of the bag, huh?â Beastboy softly quipped, scratching the back of his lightly from a mixture of amusement and embarrassment.

SUMMARY:  âBut one day, it was like a flip had switched, and suddenly Raven was all too aware of the heat of Garâs body next to hers, the rise and fall of his chest during lulls in the plot, his increasing involuntary movement during climactic scenes, andâŚsomething else, every time there was an onscreen kiss.â
It was, Raven insisted, a mutual decision reached by her and Kori. She would never â not on her life â have suggested a romance film for team movie night if she was staking her own aloof-girl-persona on it, so it was undoubtedly nice to have her bubbly, hopeless-romantic best friend to fall back on. Plus, Raven defended herself adeptly to the boys, it was a film based on one of the finest pieces of literature ever written, and if they paid attention throughout the whole thing, they might even learn a thing or two.
      âAre there any fight scenes?â Beast Boy wanted to know, sinking down into the couch as though he were being subjected to the cruelest form of torture known to man.
      âDefine fight scenes,â Raven said drily, checking to see if her tea was fully steeped.
      âBlood and guts?â the changeling said hopefully, waggling his brows at the empath seated next to him.
      Raven shot him a dark look. âNo,â she replied simply. Beast Boy groaned.
      âRa-ven,â he complained, âhow do you expect me to get through this entire chick flick without any violence?â
      âI didnât say there wouldnât be violence,â Raven said, rising from her seat to deposit her teabag in the nearest trash can. She felt more than saw his interest pique at this, and couldnât resist smirking as she delivered the fatal blow. âI mean, on-screen violence, no. Actual violence if you donât shut up and sit still during the filmâŚprobably.â

SUMMARY: âShe was pretty all the time, of course, but something about Raven â dark, broody Raven â in a sleeveless black dress on a waterfront patio, her hair fluttering in the ocean breeze, her nose a tiny bit red from a day in the sunâŚâ BBRae fluff. My contribution for BBRae Week 2022 Day 1: Vacation.
Everything in this restaurant was sticky: the laminated menus, the tabletops, the unattended children running laps around the perimeter. Gar was used to sticky â but only like, his own brand. It wasnât rare, for instance, for him to discover that heâd fallen asleep mid-movie and spilled soda all over his belongings, but at least he could identify soda as the culprit. He was by no means a germaphobe, but shit, didnât people have standards?
      Or maybe he was being unfair. Maybe all of his favorite local joints in Jump City were equally as crowded and unsanitary as this place, the difference being that those places smelled like his favorite foods, and this place smelled undeniably, unequivocally, and very pungently of fried fish.
      âWeâre at the beach,â Dick said with a blank stare when Beast Boy complained. âSeafood is kind of the bread and butter around here.â
      âNo,â Gar replied, âbread and butter is bread and butter. Thisââ He paused to compose himself as a server drifted by with a heaping tray of raw oysters, then continued, âThis is an assault on my senses.â
      âYour everyday odor is an assault on most peopleâs senses,â came Ravenâs voice from Garâs right. The quip was flat and half-hearted, like most of Ravenâs quips these days; she more or less delivered them out of a sense of obligation rather than any real desire to torment him. They had become better friends in recent years, but why mess with tradition? Gar ignored her and began grinding the heels of his hands into his eyes, struggling against the urge to vomit. âBut youâre right,â Raven surprised him by continuing. He looked up to see her eyeing the menu with distaste. âEverything here looks like it would end in me being confined to the bathroom all night.â
      âTMI,â Gar said simply, his own contribution to tradition.
TL/DR: Starfire and Nightwing find Gar and Raven dancing on the roof.

 Starfire hummed, looking around at what was left of the elegant evening. The darkened room was made light only by the dainty mirror ball hanging above, casting a shimmery glow over the sleepy party goers. The remaining guests sat around chatting, no longer dancing as they did earlier in the night. Their hushed talking was muffled by a soft melody floating from the speakers.Â
Star let out a satisfied yawn as she settled back into her chair, being careful of her sequin gown. The months of planning had come to fruition, and she could finally relax. She closed her eyes and sighed contentedly.
âTired?â
Starfire smiled, recognizing the voice of her lover. âI was merely resting my eyeballs, Boyfriend.â She said sleepily, her gaze lidded.
Nightwing chuckled, choosing not to correct her wrong use of the phrase. He sat in the chair next to his girlfriend and adjusted his tie.
âThe party was the success, yes?â Starfire offered.
Nightwing nodded. âAnother Titans charity ball for the books.â He sighed âYou really outdid yourself, Baby. I mean, I was skeptical about having it at the tower at first, but you really cleaned the place up.â
           Starfire shrugged nonchalantly. âI cannot take all the credit. It was friend Ravenâs idea to use the entry room. The tall ceilings in here are quite useful for the⌠how do you say it⌠âaestheticâ?
Nightwing gave her a thumbs up and she beamed at her triumph over the English language. Nightwing sat back.Â
âLeave it to Raven to plan a party only to sneak out of it at the first chance she gets.â He mused as he lazily drew circles on the redheadâs hand.
âYes, she is quite the introvert. Yet she stayed longer than I expected this time.â Starfire agreed.
Nightwing gave a shrugging expression. âI guess, at least she was here long enough to cut the cake. Unlike Gar, I donât know where that kid got off to.â
           Starâs eyes widened. âI concur! I have not seen him most of the night. It is quite uncharacteristic of him to miss the âpar-tayâ.â
âOohâ âuncharacteristic,â nice word, Baby!â
âMany thanks, I have been waiting to use that one.â She gloated.
Nightwing turned the conversation back to Starâs previous epiphany. âYouâre right though, itâs not like him to miss something like this unless thereâs a girl involved.â
Starfire gasped. âDo you think he has taken the lady back to his corners?â
Nightwing shrugged. âItâs possible.â
Starfire sat up, now intrigued by the situation. âWhom of the women do you think he has taken an interest in?â Her eyes danced over the room looking for clues.
âNot sure, Star.â
âPerhaps the golden blonde woman with the pearls. She seemed to be friend Garfieldâs type; do not you think?â
âMaybe.â
âOr maybe the brunette with the ponytail? She had the long legs, yes?â
âCould be.â
âOr perhapsââ
           Nightwing face palmed. âI shouldnât have said anything to you. Youâre too nosey for this kind of information.
           Starfire feigned offense. âNosey?! I am not the nosey!âÂ
âBaby, I love you, but you are as nosey as they come.â
She crossed her arms indignantly. âWell apologies for wondering whom our friend has been spending his evening with. I do not see how caring for his safety is the nosey.â
Nightwing chuckled. It was so hard to take her irritation towards the situation seriously when she was indeed quite nosey. His laughing only made her more irritated, and she turned her face away from him with a âhmph.â
âAw nooo! Baby, Iâm sorry, youâre not nosey. Donât be mad at me, Love.â He cried out, still giggling as he reached towards her. Feeling generous, she decided to accept his lackluster apology and terminate her planned silent treatment. Instead, she leaned into his touch.
âThat is all that I wished to hear you admit.â
The pair sat in silence for a long moment, soaking in each otherâs comfort. Eventually though, Starfire spoke.
âPerhaps we should go check on Changeling in his room-â
âStar.â
âRichard. I am merely the worried for our friend and nothing more. You should not assume. It will make you the ass. Now, come.â She spoke hastily as she stood and made her way toward the stairs.Â
Nightwing sighed before begrudgingly standing to follow her.Â
âNosey alien.â he muttered to himself.
~~~
           âI do not understand. He is not here?â Starfire spoke in bewilderment.
           The alien and boy wonder now stood in Changelingâs vacant room, wondering where their green friend could possibly be. Well, Starfire wondered. Nightwing was growing very aware of the late hour and the training he had the next morning. At this point, Changeling could be halfway to Mexico and Nightwing would still say it could wait until he had had a proper nightâs rest.
           âStar⌠Heâs probably just passed out drunk somewhere. Can we go to bed?â He pleaded.
           âItâs not like him to miss the party.â She ignored her boyfriendâs statement, now actually growing a bit worried for her friend.
           âStar, I promise heâs okay, alright? Letâs just get some rest.â He took his girlfriend by the hand.
âŚ
           âDo you hear that?â She asked suddenly.
           âHear what?â
           âThat music.â
           âThe music? Baby, itâs coming from the party.â
           Starfire stepped forward, eyes squinted as she focused. âNo⌠there is the musicâŚâ
           She pushed past him, following the sound out the door. Nightwing ran an exasperated hand down his face as he called after her.
           âStar! Come on, can we please just go to beeed?âÂ
           There was no reply. Nightwing stuck his head out the door to see his girlfriend floating up the stairwell at the end of the hall that led to the roof. He groaned, and followed, realizing it was going to be a long night.
~~~
           Considering he could not fly (and he was currently exhausted), It took Nightwing considerably longer to climb the stairs than his super-powered girlfriend. As he grew closer to the top he was breathing heavily, and also a bit irritated. He spoke loudly.
           âOk- *pant* Star. Iâve- *pant* had enough of your-*pant* antics!
           âSHHHHHHHHHHH!âÂ
           âDonât *wheeze* shush me! Iâmââ
           âSHHHHHHHHHHH!â
           Star stood in the shadows at the top of the stairwell, behind the wall. He soon realized that she was hiding from something⌠or someone on the roof. Her eyes were clear of fear but had a hint of excitement and shock. Nightwing gave his girlfriend a perplexed look and she motioned for him to come up and see what she was seeing. As he climbed the final steps, he realized there was the soft sound of a strumming guitar floating from the rooftop. Star had been correct.
           Once Nightwing reached Starfire she quickly pulled him out of the view of the rooftop. He silently gestured to her with confusion in his eyes, but she could only giddily point. Nightwing slowly turned his eyes to the rooftop.
What?
Now this was a scene Nightwing never expected to see in his life.
 There on the roof was Changeling. And Raven. Dancing. Together.Â
Nightwing rubbed his eyes, expecting the two to disappear. He had to be hallucinating from lack of sleep. But no, when he looked again, there they remained. He watched, completely speechless.Â
They swayed to the music playing from the phone in Garâs back pocket. Nightwing recognized the tune as a love song. Gar led the dance with smooth technique. One arm was snaked around her waist dangerously far down the small of her back. Surprisingly, Raven did not seem to mind this, as Garâs other hand was currently stroking the back of her neck as she leaned into his embrace. She even laid her head on his chest. Every now and again, Gar would lean down to nuzzle into her hair. They were far too caught up in one another to notice the other couple mere feet away. It was intimate. And not at all platonic.
âIs it not wonderful?âÂ
Starfireâs whisper broke her boyfriendâs shock induced trance. Nightwing thought for a moment before sparing her a soft smile.
âIt is, Star. But now we really have to go before Raven catches us and goes ape.â
Starfire turned to Nightwing with giant saucer eyes. âMust we leave so soon? I would very much like to stay and watch.â
Nightwing rolled his eyes, gently grabbing her by the hand and leading her toward the stairs. âYou are so. nosey.â
âI am not!â
âAre too.â
Starfire released his hand longingly looking back.
âCould I at least take a photo?â
âKoriandâr.â
âComingâŚâ
---
Wow that was a long one. If you made it all the way through, I thank you! I loved leaning into the relationship of Star and Rob. I feel like Rob is definitely the wing man like "ok lets leave them alone" and star is like "WHAT NO WHYYYY."
Gabrielle was excited, as tonight was the night she would planning for; a cosy little movie night with Revan. He was a little difficult to convince at first, seeing as he was one of those âoriginal source materialâ purists. How she got him to agree to the quirky home movie marathon had been a bet as to how many âKarenâs Gabrielle would have to deal with in a week. âBless his heart, Revan WAY under-guessed.â Gabrielle thought to herself as she remembered the many agonising debates with fake-coupon toting, arrogant, demanding the impossible customers she often found in her little boutique.
âOkay I got a good line-up, we got a horror romance, a classic 50s schlockbuster, a deep period drama and an adaptation.â Gabrielle pointed as she placed Love for a monster, The Leechmen from Neptune, Wonder and Loss and finally Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde on her living room coffee table.
âI think heâll be impressed with these films; they have things we both like in them.â Gabrielle smirked to herself. âEspecially since he bought me the book version of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde for my birthday.â Gabrielle said as she started to finish cleaning and setting up her living room as a mini theatre. âHe better not knock on Leechmen; it was a practical effects pioneer and helped jetset the iconic vision of John Carpenter.â Gabrielle said with strong resolve.
âMan needs some culture in his life and boy! Do I plan on giving it to him.â
Gabrielle set about making snacks, like popcorn and chilling their preferred adult beverages of choice; giddy to share in one of her own passions with her lover. âI hope he can see why I love films at the end of the night. Or at least why I appreciate them as my preferred medium of choice.â Gabrielle said softly to herself.
Thatâs when she heard her doorbell go off; the sound causing her to jump a little before she shouted out. âImma coming!â and practically skipped to her front door; already feeling like she was on cloud nine.
Revan was unsure as to what he was about to expect, he truly hadnât expected his girlfriend to bust her ass so much so often for ingrates to make her job harder. He had always felt movies were loud and often took the wrong messages from the original text or would carve some of the deeper and more ephemeral pieces out for a streamlined performance. But, he had agreed to the bet and her demand was a movie night with her selecting the films they would be watching. He waited as the bell rang and soon the door swung open and revealed Gabrielle; in a faded Mega Monkeys tee, plaited purple skirt and ripped denim. Revan couldnât help but notice the light in her eyes right before Gabrielle launched herself into his arms.
âRevie! You made it.â She gushed as she kissed him.
âWhy wouldnât I? I did promise Iâd come; Iâm not late, am I? Finding parking was a pain.â Revan apologised to Gabrielle, hoping he hadnât upset her.
âNo, youâre on time and thereâs no need to apologise, street-side parking goes wicked fast on these lanes.â Gabrielle waved him inside. âI am just feeling super hype about tonight. One couple enters, four films watched, endless entertainment.â She boomed in a faux wrestler commentator-like voice.
Revan couldnât help but smile at her raw energy and emotional investment as he entered into Gabrielleâs apartment; loving the soft floral scent that hovered in the air. âWhat are we watching tonight, Gabi?â Revan asked, internally wincing at the idea of being subjected to the Serpent Gem A film franchise. Gabrielle smirked as she gestured to the setup of food and movies.
âWe got a dark romance, a b-movie, a Drama piece and an adaptation.â Gabrielle answered as she pulled a red satin blanket and patted the cushion beside her. âIâll let you choose which film we watch first. Itâll be fun!â
âB-movie? Like one of those rubber-suit monster and cardboard city films?â Revan asked, feeling a little dismissive about watching an old B-movie.
âLeechmen from Neptune is a tentpole and cornerstone of monster movies, schlock and science fiction horror due to its massively innovative and visionary practical effects for the time.â Gabrielle fiercely refuted. âJohn Carpenter sited that was a massive film that inspired him in his own practical effects cult classics.â
âIâll trust you on that one; I guess⌠Love for a monster, weâll watch that one first.â Revan awkwardly said. He hadnât expected such a furore and passion from Gabrielle over such an old film.
âInteresting choice. I did nail you for a lover of dark and mysterious romances.â Gabrielle knowingly commented on her gothic loverâs choice. She watched Revan put on the DVD and admired his lithe build, boots, fish-net gloves and black button-up and imagined him in the role of Lord Casqawhail; the dark aristocrat of Love for a monster. âHmmm⌠A perfect fit.â Gabrielle thought as Revan sat back down beside her.
Revan felt his initial confusion and concerns wash away as the sombre and very operatic dark romance played out before him. While he was not a âfilm broâ he could see why Gabrielle loved the film they were watching. âWhy did you select this film?â He asked after an impassioned monologue from Lord Casqawhail about the nature of beauty, life, time and misery.
âWell, itâs a unique take on Vampire Movies, dark romances and a collage of old century vampire lore.â Gabrielle answered. âLord Casqawhail is a compelling and morally grey character who gave his humanity to protect his lands and peoples only to be condemned and entombed for many centuries. He is a master of academia and prose and once free from his confines; he doesnât know what he wants.â Gabrielle paused as Lorielle encountered the Lord nearing the third act. âDespite his power, beauty, knowledge and ability and outside the rat race of time; he still seeks purpose and comfort. Even if itâs temporary.â She finished.
Revan was taken by her answer and the depth that it had as she nestled against him and kissed him on the neck. âI never considered it like that.â He said softly
âGuillermo Del Toro is a master monster writer.â Gabrielle responded âMany people look to him as a guide post for modern dark fantasy scriptwriting.â Gabrielle smiled as she could see the beginnings of comfort and interest on Revanâs face and smiled as she felt him hold and squeeze her hand.
âI think I might like doing these movie nights more often.â Revan said before they focused back on the film.
It was an awful idea, indeed â something he would come up with, no doubt.
But he hadnât come up with it. She had.
Even more reason to turn back now. But she couldnât⌠or wouldnâtâŚ
âYo where is everybody?â
Raven flicked her eyes from her book over to her perplexed green teammate in the kitchen. It was a quiet evening at the tower⌠or at least it had been until about eight seconds ago. Her head swirled as she fought to remember the details of Robinâs departure.
âRobin came through here about an hour ago, going on about something to do with the robbery yesterday. I presume he has a lead, or a suspect or something. I think Starfire went with him.â
Beast Boy raised an eyebrow.
ââA lead, or a suspect or something.â Huh. Descriptive.â
Ravenâs cheeks colored.
 âWell, I suppose I wasnât paying the most attention⌠I-â
â-Had your nose stuck in that book?â He playfully cut her off, gesturing to the book in her lap.
Raven rolled her eyes. âHowâd you guess?â
âI had an intuition.â He boasted, catching her gaze with a smirk. âYour eyes are too pretty to be looking down all the time.â
           Raven scoffed at the compliment, but she couldnât help shifting nervously as she tried to hide her blush. She was still unsure of their new dynamic. They had always picked on one another since their early Titan days. He would annoy her, and she would try to kill him. It was like, âtheir thingâ (as Star would say). However, As the pair grew older, Beast Boy became less annoying, and Raven; less irritable. And as they reached an equilibrium, Beast Boyâs teasing remarks suddenly turned to flirtatious comments. This came as a shock to Raven for two reasons:
One ⌠Beast Boy was flirting with her.
 And twoâ She didnât completely hate it.
 Beast Boy let out a sigh, completely unaware of Ravenâs discomfort. Instead, turning the conversation back to Robin and Starfire. âKind of bummed that they left.â Though Beast Boyâs smile never left his eyes sobered.
 âWhat about Cy? Is he in?â Beast Boy asked, now moving closer to the couch where Raven sat.Â
Raven scrunched her nose, trying to remember. âI think heâs with Claire tonight.â she stated.
Beast Boy slumped his shoulders, resting his hands on the back of the couch.Â
âOh right⌠Claire.â He mumbled, eyes downcast.
Claire was Cyborgâs new girlfriend whom heâd started dating a couple months prior. Heâd met her at a car show, of all places. Raven remembered how Cyborg had begged her to accompany him there, just to almost ignore her as soon as his eyes met Claireâs. Raven couldnât find it in herself to be upset, though. She was just so happy that he had found someone.
Though not everyone had received this new romance with as much grace as Raven. Beast Boy was growing rather annoyed with his best friendâs growing absence from the tower. While he tried to be happy for Cyborg outwardly, Raven could sense his inner sadness at the situation.Â
âMan, this sucks. Another Thursday night alone.â
Raven squinted. What plans could he possibly have at 9:45 on a Thursday night? It only took a matter of seconds for her to connect the dots. How could she forget? Of course, Thursday night was always-
âItâs movie night.â
Beast Boyâs rubbed the back of his neck. âYeaaahhh⌠I was kinda looking forward to it, since everyone has been gone recently. But ya know. I guess thereâs always next week. Anyways, night, Rae.â
As Beast Boy turned to walk away, Raven could feel the disappointment rolling off him. Maybe it was his strong emotions. Maybe it was the way his kind eyes were colored a glum hue. Maybe it was the fullness of the moon through the window. Or maybe it was the combination of the three that prompted Ravenâs bad idea.
Her terrible, horrid, atrocious, monstrous, very very bad idea.Â
Raven bit her lip before turning around. âGar, wait!â she stammered.
Beast Boy stopped in his tracks at her use of his real name. He turned to meet her eyes.
Raven drew a shaky breath. âMaybe⌠we could watch a movie tonight.â
Gar blinked, unsure he heard her correctly. âYou mean⌠us watch a movie? Like just you and me⌠alone?âÂ
No longer able to hold his gaze, Raven looked down. â... If you donât want to, we donât have to-â
âNo-NO. I mean- of course I want to!â Gar stammered to assure her, in fear that she would leave.
Before she could protest, he had already found a spot on the couch next to her. Quite close to her at that.Â
She looked up at him, âAre you sure you want to?â
He looked into her eyes for a moment, before breaking into a genuine smile.
âThere is nowhere Iâd rather be, Raven.â
Oh.
This was a bad idea, indeed.
It turns out Raven was correct: It was a bad idea. That fact was proved later that night, when Garâs arm accidentally found her shoulder. And again, when their lips accidentally touched. And again, when the pair found themselves tangled up on the couch, movie nights long forgotten. Through it all, Raven could only think one thing:
Thank Azar for bad ideas.
~~~
I am not good at writing Raeâs pov BUT I hope you all enjoyed that. I wish I could have gotten into the actual movie a bit more. maybe there will be a part two in the future :D
âSheâs perfect,â said Raven, looking down at baby Mar'i asleep in the bed between her and Koro. âI know itâs a clichĂŠ but⌠itâs true.â
âI donât get tired of looking at her,â responded Kori, also staring at Mar'i with a sleepy smile. âThanks for making her sleep.â
Raven shook her head with her eyes still stuck to the baby. âIâm glad to take one thing off your shoulders.â
It was hard to believe that when Raven and Victor had arrived, Mar'i was crying her head off as the new parents took turns walking her through the apartment in a frenzy.
Raven and Vic had looked at the chaos, then at each other, and taken charge of it. Now Mar'i lay asleep and Vic was in the kitchen making a much needed late breakfast for Dick and Kori. The only thing still chaotic was Dick, who was still zooming by completing random household tasks in a disorganized fashion.
:readmore:
âHoney,â Kori called out when he happened to steer close enough to them. âCome sit down. You have to slow down when she lets us, remember?â
âRight.â Dick slowed down with effort and joined them, laying at the foot of the bed. Kori laced her fingers through his, and it was like a switch that let him breathe full breaths again.
âTo think Iâve always wanted to be a mother,â she mused. âItâs odd to think it finally happened.â
âYouâve always known that?â Raven asked, and Kori nodded. âI never saw myself having children. Still donât.â She said it because sheâd realized it at that moment, and then wondered if that was insulting, seeing as she was looking down on her friendâs baby as she said that.
But Kori was Kori. She didnât take offense. "You've never had baby fever?" she wanted to know.
âNo," chuckled Raven, and left it at that.
Part of her still doubted the so-called baby fever was even real. Seeing a baby awoke a primal urge to take care of it. Humans were designed that way. It was so parents wouldnât abandon their babies for being so needy--so the human species wouldnât die out. Maybe it was because she held such tight control on her emotions, things like that didnât make it through her primary filters. Or maybe the fever was a myth.
Raven smiled down at Mar'i. âIâm just fine being an auntie.â
Dick cleared his throat. âRaven, is Gar coming now?â
âYeah, just after the table read,â Raven confirmed.
âUm, when he comes, can you keep him from trying to pick Mar'i up?â
Raven did rip her eyes from Mar'i for that, turning to look at her friend in surprise. Dick at least had the decency look ashamed, though tiredness had made him callous, and Kori shook her head smiling, in a way Raven could tell they had talked about this beforehand and hadnât agreed. âExcuse me? Why?â
âItâs not personal, alright? Iâm just trying to keep my new baby from being dropped.â
âWhat?â Raven couldnât help feel immediately defensive of her boyfriend of two years, and made no effort to hide it. âWhy do you think heâs gonna drop her? I was just more likely to drop her.â
âNope, you took care of kids before,â Victorâs voice joined the discussion from the kitchen. âTheyâre fine to this day. No evidence of a long-buried head trauma you conveniently forgot to tell us about.â
âIâm trying to protect my child here, Raven,â Dick pleaded, more frenzied seeing Ravenâs frown didnât ease.
âGar seemed so eager to visit, too,â Vicâs voice commented. âHe looked particularly excited today. Flippant. Butter-fingered.â
Raven called out, âThanks, Vic. Donât help.â
Kori calmly said, âIf Mar'i was dropped she would simply fly.â
âThatâs right, canât Tamaraneans fly from birth?â asked Raven.
âSheâs half Tamaranean,â Dick pointed out, at the same time Kori laughed, âHe hasnât allowed me to see if she can fly or not.â
âOf course not!â Dick cried at his wife, who smiled so warmly at him in return his face slackened, and he gave her a kiss as if to apologize for being a raw nerve.
He looked so pitiful, Raven couldnât help but want to be diplomatic. âWell⌠with any luck Mar'i will stay asleep through Garâs visit.â
However, there was no such luck. In the next hour, Mar'i began to fuss, then move her little feet, and open her eyes at turns, and she was well awake by the time G let himself through the door, bellowing, âUncle Gar is here!â
âSh!â Dick admonished, having materialized at the door next to him.
Garâs ears dropped. âIs she asleep?â he asked, now in a whisper.
âNo, but she just was,â Dick said, his tone plainly regretting that she wasnât still asleep.
Gar lifted the admonishment on himself and scanned the apartment for his niece. His eyes brightened when he located Raven âit was a thing she always noticed happened when he saw her again after a while, and it was one of her favorite things in the whole cruel world-, and he made a beeline for the bed, laying a kiss on his girlfriendâs temple before he turned his attention to the baby, wherein his eyes widened and he gasped.
âWhoa, Kori⌠sheâs so beautiful. And so tiny.â
And then the thing Dick feared so dearly happened in a split second. Dick was leaning against the opposite wall, half asleep on his feet, when Gar asked, âCan I pick her up?â and Kori nodded.
One green hand went under her head, another scooped the rest of her body, and Gar delicately lifted Mar'i on a safe journey to his chest, where she laid her head, perfectly comforted.
Dick had been halfway across the room. Gar turned just in time to see him stop cold, and cocked his head at the spatial disorientation of his friend being four feet closer than where he thought he was.
Dick had stopped cold because Gar had turned, and the sight of him holding Marâi was so undeniably peaceful that his sleep-deprived mind could scarcely remember what he was scared about. He let out a mystified, âOh.â And straightened.
Victor came out of the kitchen with the last batch of pancakes, most of which would be for Gar. âSee, told you he wasnât gonna drop her.â
âYou thought I was gonna drop her?â Gar demanded.
Kori laughed at the scene and looked at Raven, but her smile fell when she saw her friendâs face.
Raven was staring at wide-eyed at nothing, face flushed red. Kori called, âRaven?â, and when the roomâs attention inevitably turned on her, she went redder, covered her mouth, and coughed into it to cover it up. Koro patted her back, and Raven could feel her boyfriendâs concerned gaze on her.
Raven had never wanted children. It had never entered her mind before in any shape or form. But all it had taken was Gar holding Mar'i like that for her to be hit upside the head with a deep, irrational longing.
Maybe she wanted kids. Maybe she wanted one right now. The certainty split her brain in two: on the one hand, she knew her new feeling was as unreasonable as it was sudden; on the other, she was sure she needed to have a baby right this moment, with that exact guy. Goddamn it. The stupid fever was real.
âIâm fine,â she said as Dick brought her a glass of water. She was still avoiding Garâs eyes.
If you concentrated hard enough, you might hear a clock ticking.
It's fucking 0:14 where I am I was so close to making it đĽ whatever it's still Day 1 because I haven't gone to bed
I'm risking my life finishing editing this on mobile. If there's any mistakes I'll edit them tomorrow đ
I stretched this prompt thin, mainly because I was sure the prompt 'future' was gonna win in the poll and I didn't realize it hadn't until after I was attached to this đś but hey, at least it keeps with the family theme
This is legitimately all based off a tiktok
Iâm not gonna say how many drafts I have for how many of the week prompts in case I don't finish but I'm posting it all on ao3 and fanfiction.net at the end of the week.
@bbraeweek22 hi! Thank you for organizing this đ
The Tower was quiet as many of the Titans were out on missions or aiding their fellow international members on their own cases. That was why Raven was bemused to see the full team of the Doom Patrol standing idle within the central comms room of the Titans Tower. Raven merely quirked an eyebrow at the four older heroes, before floating to the kitchen to pour herself a cup of herbal tea. âCan I help you with anything? We rarely ever get surprise guests; except of course; when weâre being invaded.â Raven calmly stated as she picked up her cup and sat down facing the Beastboyâs adopted family.
There was no answer to her question or to her jabbing quip, Mento just continued to stare at her with a stoic and stone-faced expression before talking. âI think you know why weâre here.â Mento spoke sternly as he pulled out a chair spun it around and sat on it. âGarfield is a good man and has a great many talents, and pretending he isnât lying to a psychic isnât one of them.â
The air between the Doom Patrol and the lone Titan grew heavy as an unseen tension started to rise.
âI certainly have no idea as to what youâre implying. I speak in absolutes not weasel words, try that again and this time; say the quiet part loud.â Raven retorted without showing a single emotion on her face.
That was when Robotman blurted out, interrupting the back and forth. âDisco-hat here wants to be sure there isnât some ulterior motive or something⌠Like you havinâ daddy issues or somethinâ.â The older cyborg finished weakly as Raven turned to look at him.
âFirst off; I donât have daddy issues. Second, my father is an inter-dimensional demon lord who swallows all life from world to world; so, we do not get along in the slightest.â Raven answered not blinking as she took a sip of her tea. âIf that was everything, feel free to leave or is there more to this impromptu house call while Garfield isnât here?â She inquired.
âPerceptive, arenât you?â Mento quipped.
âNo. I am simply not stupid and you overplayed your hand. As much as Gar talks about me to you; he talks about you to me. Out with it; we havenât all day Steven.â Raven bit back with her iconic half-smile as she took a deep sip from her drink before she planted her cup on the table.
There was a pregnant pause as Mentoâs face slipped into a grimace before he let out a hissing sigh and tried to regain composure.
âWhat do you plan to do with Garfield?â The question perplexed Raven as she quirked an eyebrow at the older hero.
âI fail to understand the question? Garfield is a person; I donât plan to do anything with him without his acknowledgment or active and enthusiastic consent. I refuse to play this game of word semantics.â Raven boldly rebuffed. She turned moved her gaze past Mento and towards Elastigirl. âRita; I must give you a warm thank you. The tea you told Gar to get me has been absolutely delightful.â
âThe thanks for that goes to Larry; he has a more refined palette than me.â Elastigirl said, smiling warmly as she stepped beside her husband and placed a hand on Mentoâs shoulder. âWhat Steve has been trying to do is inquire about the nature of your relationship. Is it a temporary scenario for you; or do you wish to pursue a more permanent dynamic with Garfield?â
âAre you seriously asking if I am as the kids say âhitting and quittingâ, Garfield?â Raven asked with incredulity. A small laugh escaped her as she even began to ponder how Mento conjured up that idea.
âMore or less. The kidâs got a big heart, donât wanna see âem get hurt.â Negative Man spoke up with an emotionless tone. âEspecially after how his first romance went.â
Negative Manâs comments gave Raven pause as she recollected what could have been Beastboyâs first romance until it hit her: Terra.
âTerra was distraught and had many deep emotional and mental issues. They went unchecked and untended to; in the end she died a hero. I think thatâs how Garfield chooses to remember her.â Raven looked at Mento to gauge his reaction; this time the man was controlling his expression expertly well.
âI assume because of my connection to my father; the world-eating nightmare, you think I might one day lose control and do something terrible to him?â Raven asked.
âIf the blonde could, who says you canât?â Mento responded.
âYou are comparing apples to oranges in this case. I was raised from birth understanding my powers, my heritage and the dangers that both of those things can cause.â Raven argued, feeling her anger boil at the implied remark that she was an unstable timebomb. âWhat I would give for five minutes in the Octagon with that bastard!â Rage roared within Ravenâs mind. âTerra was manipulated by an expert on the subject and had what little control over her powers stolen from her and her emotions pushed to extremes and turned loose on us. Donât simplify her story.â
âYou really care for the green goofball donât ya?â Robotman bluntly asked.
âWith every fibre of my being; he makes my days brighter just by being here. I would never hurt him.â Raven said every word with strong and unrepentant resolve. Mento didnât say anything for a moment; before getting up and started to walk to the Doom Jet.
âI have heard everything I need to hear. Welcome to the family; I expect both you and Garfield over for Thanksgiving and Christmas.â
âThatâs it? The entire Doom Patrol broke into my home just to give me the third degree and the classic âIf you break my kidâs heartâ speech.â Raven called out, still processing the incredulity of everything that had just taken place over several stressfully tense minutes.
âBout the size of it. They care for the goof⌠Wanted to know if youâll treat him right.â Negative Man bluntly responded before leaving.
âAn Steve heard all he needed to hear. Heâs not kidding by the way; he will be expecting you two for the holidays.â Robotman stated as he left as well.
âSteve is complicated and what we do isnât easier to explain. Weâve seen possible futures and⌠it has left him anxious. He just wanted to know his son was happy.â Elastigirl spoke as she hugged Raven before turning towards the Doom Jet.
The purple and chrome coloured sky-craft rocketed up into the sky and disappeared beyond the horizon; leaving behind Jump Cityâs local sorceress as she contended with a swirl of emotions.
âThey like us!â Happy cheered
âThey accept and endorse our love. That is beyond amazing.â Love was beside herself with happiness
âThat was an excellent and eye-opening encounter, I feel we have learnt so much about his family from this conversation.â Knowledge noted.
âAs well as a clear and concise construct of their emotional needs and moral centres. They are complicated characters indeed.â Wisdom observed.
âT-t-that was terrifying.â Timid squeaked out.
âDid they think they could have forced us to break up!?â Rage hissed out.
âWe should go find Gar! Give him a kiss and tell em the good news.â Brave said âthat we meet the family and that they approve.â
âA think a phonecall would be more appropriate; seeing as he is on a stake out right now.â Raven thought to herself. âThat, and I need a sounding board for everything that weâre feeling; its too much.â Raven winced as the beginnings of a headache was making itself known.
She dialled her jade lover and waited for him to pick up.
âWhatâs cooking Rae Rae?â His excitable voice was like music to her ears.
âDoom Patrol visited just now. Weâre invited to all the usual holiday events.â Raven summarised awkwardly.
âAww man⌠Mento gave you the third degree why? Why would he do that?â Garfield questioned.
âHe was under the impression I was going to sleep with you and dump you, or mistakenly believed our love may have been a long con by Trigon to enter our reality.â
âThat⌠sounds on point for Steve. What did you say?â
âI loved you with every fibre of my being and nothing happens between us without complete trust and consent. I may have also taken childish jabs at him.â Raven answered.
âThatâs my girl! He needs to laugh more. Wait, did you say we both got invited to the big events?â Gar questioned.
âOh yes, I did say those words roughly in that order.â Raven sarcastically quipped. âBut in all seriousness, before he left, he welcomed me into the family.â
âThat means he really liked you and approves of you. When I get back, we are going to celebrate; how about that new up-scale waffle place youâve been talking about?â Beastboy inquired as he had already begun planning the celebrations.
âThat would be lovely Gar.â
