Easthies is someone who really does believe he's doing right. And to an extent, he genuinely is correct! Justice can not make exceptions to someone based upon age, and justice is itself an often cold thing. Sometimes it won't feel like enough, sometimes it will feel like too much, because the goal of justice isn't vindication or satisfaction, but protection and order.

But that's also where Easthies flaw is, and what makes him such a good character. He takes that knowledge and then pulls it. He understands that you can't always consider people's feelings in justice, but then he takes that to mean that their feelings don't matter. He sees that he must do things and follow rules and protocols whether people like it or not so that more don't suffer, and takes that to meaning the rules are never wrong.

But the thing is, the rules are wrong sometimes. You do have to take people's feelings into consideration even if you can't act upon them.

Easthies core is his rigidness, so when that is shown to be incorrect, when the very thing he has built his life and security and ideals around is shown wrong by the very person who built them, he snaps. Of course he does! It seems insane from an outside perspective, and he is acting insane, but this is the equivalent of his whole life falling down and coming apart. He was taught that there were no exceptions, and this idea was never shown to be bad. In fact, he was probably praised for it, because it let him perform efficiently and effectively. This is something that garnered him respect from his superiors and colleagues, from everyone who mattered to him, and now that very same thing is something being disproven, something that is making everyone turn against him, something that he is just now being told goes against everything he has wanted to do.
