Ember Kyles

“it’ll never be normal.” chase sighed softly, “i know that i don’t deserve anything from him. he doesn’t owe me anything. i guess i just saw a glimmer of hope. i don’t know.”

Pouting slightly she held her hand out to her friend. “ Chase, mon cher, everything takes time...especially with things like this...so ... don’t count yourself out but don’t expect to be completely safe...not until he’s safe again with you..”

“no. i was just with kal and things got weird and we got into a weird argument and now i’m here.”

“Wouldn’t that be normal now? I mean it’s been weird since you came back, Chase.”

“yeah, i guess.” chase groaned softly, running his hands over his face, “god dammit. tonight has been so weird.”

Adjusting herself, Ember turns to her friend. “What did you do? Go on the diving board or somethin’?”

“mm, i wish i was that drunk. but maybe i am.” chase wrinkled his nose, knowing full well he was just sad drunk. “what’s there to say? i don’t like emotional drunk. i miss on top of the world drunk. if i drink more, will i get there? probably not.”

Humming slightly she shrugged. “On top of the world drunk is always fleeting, and sad drunk is always there to take it’s place mon cher. It’s just life.”

chase took it, downing it quickly and nodding. “oo, who is he? tell me more.” he shrugged, letting his head fall against the wall, “i dunno. it’s been a weird, long night. i honestly don’t even know.”

Brows raise slightly at how quickly her friend takes down the drink. I hardly believe you’ll remember any of this in the morning so don’t hate me if I decide not to tell you until tomorrow.” She lets out a small laugh before rolling her head so her eyes were gazing towards the ceiling. “Wanna talk?”

“please tell me that you have more alcohol. because i’m too lazy to go find some,” chase mumbled, leaning against the wall next to ember. “as much as i love walking through sweaty kids making out, i’m just not feeling it tonight.” he sighed, looking over at her, “how’s your night though?”

She raises her glass, passing it to the other, now done for the night, not risking the horrible hangover the next morning. “The guy that I’ve kinda got a thing for got called into work...how about you?”

“the fuck is wrong with people? i’m really fucking sorry you have to put up with that shit.” kalvin responds, brows furrowed. “do you think people can, like, unlearn shit like that? you know, like unlearn their own racism?”

“Don’t be, I go through the best of it. I’m mixed as fuck, if I looked anymore like my dad, skin tone, features, anything I’d be ridiculed for it . And it’s not just white people, there’s such an anti black rhetoric in a lot of east asian countries and even in the black community guys worship girls who don’t look fully black or any other type of girl besides a black girl it’s shit.” Ember sits up straighter moving to face her friend. “I don’t know, I mean we can probably unlearn it as like a society but individuals? I just think people learn how to keep their mouths shut, never change their minds.”

“i’m really sorry. we just started working on this new case and i think she needs me there to do a little research. i’ll see you soon, though, right?” reggie offers the other a smile.

“It’s really not a big deal Reggie, she would’ve gutted you if you said no.” A tight lipped smile is returned, not ready just yet to show how disappointed she really was. “Yeah of course...I’m not going anywhere soon.”

“cool.” he responds simply, taking a final hit before finishing off his blunt. “you are. you’re also kind of a genuis at getting me to realize shit. like, you said before, there’s a lack of people of color in general in this town. there always has been, i guess, and i wish there wasn’t.”

“It’s hella shitty ya know? Like guys wanna do you because you’re exotic like shit dude, and every girl thinks you wear a weave and want to touch your hair. People think they can say the n-word just because they know you...and there’s hardly any visible people like me and Reg it’s not normal ya know?” Hands come up to wipe her face slightly. “Like shiittt I just wanna smoke weed and look cute I don’t need this bullshit...I ain’t got the time.”

reggie’s just removed his shirt when his phone begins to ring in his pocket. work. “hold on just a second.” he sighs, answering the phone call. it’s his boss’s assistant, and they need him in as soon as possible. he hangs up the phone, picks up his shirt and puts it back on. “duty calls. i’m sorry.”

Her smile fades as his phone goes off, knowing that whatever wouldn’t be good for her. Nodding she does the same, her phone becoming her way of avoiding to seem childish. “Yeah..uh don’t be, I get it...”

“him? fuck, i was just eyeing him a few minutes ago. he’s all yours, though. you know him?” he questions, taking a hit. “that would be why, i guess.” he chuckles, letting out a cloud of smoke.

“Yeah...I intern at a law firm he works in, he’s amazingly smart and has an ass for days.” She chuckles nodding along to her friend. “I know it’s like I’m a genius with relationships or something.”

“point him out to me if you see him?” kalvin questions, holding his fingers out to receive the blunt back. “you’re right. but, a part of me can’t fucking let him go for some reason.”

The blunts passed into the waiting fingers as her head lulls onto his shoulder. “ He’s the only other black person in this entire town...and the only black dude sitting on the edge of the pool right now...” She chuckles softly before patting his leg. “ Because there’s no closure? Because you went through hell and had to force those feelings aside for your brother?”

kalvin passes the blunt over to his friend. “a harvard boy? damn. what’s a harvard boy doing here?” he questions, brow cocked. “i know you’re here for me, em. fuck, you’ve always been there. i just, uh, need to figure some shit out in my head before i can say it to you, y'know? but, you’ll be the first to know.”

Within seconds of the blunt being passed over Ember’s taken a hit before leaning her head back against the building. “I don’t know but he’s the finest boy I’ve ever seen shit...” She can’t help but laugh softly before her head gently rolls over to look at Kalvin. “no pressure babes, so don’t freak yourself out over it okay? He’s just a boy.”

“are you? that’s cool.” kalvin responds with a smile, inhaling deeply before letting out a cloud of smoke. “want a hit?” he questions, coughing slightly. “no. uh. don’t want to talk about it. just kind of wish i couldn’t feel, y'know?”

She nods tilting her head to look her friend over. “I’d love a hit but just one, I’m trying to impress a Harvad boy.” Shimming she sighed at his final statement. “Oh, mon cher....I know how you feel, but just so you know...I’m here for you my sweets.”

kalvin lets out a laugh, though it’s goofier than his typical laugh. “hey, i’m pretty sure i’ve walked in your house reeking before.” he argues playfuly, shrugging a shoulder. “oh.” he responds, disregarding her question for a moment. “i was trying to keep it, uh, sort of a secret. between me and chase.”

“Correction that was my apartment ... Imma move into a town house soon b.” She laughs along before holding her hand out slightly. “I swear he wasn’t super forward about it, kinda made me work for it...but unlike Chase, these lips are sealed ... unless you wanna talk about it ... “

reggie bites down on his lip slightly, examines his clothes. “i guess i could remove my shirt and swim in my jeans.” he looks over at the other. “screw it. let’s do it.”

A bright smile makes it onto Ember’s features, a smile he seemed to invoke time and time again. “Now that’s what I like to hear.” With in an instant she’s kicked off her shoes and started removing her shirt, keeping the black clad tights on. Dropping Ember’s phone into her shirt she looks over at him. “I’m jumping so hurry up.”

a blunt in between his lips, kalvin’s currently on the road to being crossfaded. “i. love. weed.” he practically shouts to the party outside. “what are your opinions?” he asks of his friend, though he already knows the answer. “wait, have you seen chase anywhere? i think i lost him.” 

She leans against the wall as she watches Kalvin. “I know you love weed Kal, also I’m a strong believer in smoke weed if you want just don’t smell horrible when waking into my home.” Laughing, Ember almost misses the question about Chase, though she perks up. “Probs the bathroom, but why didn’t you tell me you two kissed?”
