tw: military mention throughout, ptsd, drug abuse Â
from a young age, baz lived in what he perceived to be his fatherâs shadow. despite a stable upbringing and a doting mother, it never seemed to be long in between bouts of fighting with his dad. these ranged from smaller disagreements about bazâs behavior or opinions, to larger things: namely, as baz entered and went through his teenage years, his army officer father expressed a clear, unbending wish for baz to follow in his footsteps by enlisting.
baz himself never wanted to enlist â part of it was due to his rocky relationship with his father, whose military career had always seemed illustrious and successful at the expense of his relationship with his only son. the other part was that in his own opinion, baz didnât believe he could morally justify joining the military. stubbornly, baz refused and was given an ultimatum: he could proceed to college after high school and his father would foot the financial bill, if and only if baz would enlist in the service after graduating university.Â
in the end, baz did comply, if only to complete his studies without taking out an absurd amount of loans. when the time came after graduation for him to enlist, he all but begged his father not to make him go through with it, but his fatherâs mind was made up. without a final word to him, baz left as soon as possible to enlist in army officerâs training
in the end, this didnât last long â it was hardly over a month into training when baz reached a breaking point. the atmosphere of the military was far from compatible with him, and at he saw more of the realities of being in the military, he began to question the idea of what serving his country was really supposed to entail. with a prominent army officer for a father, deserting wasnât an option; instead, baz opted to transfer to an army medic training program and learn how to treat civilians and soldiers in war, wanting desperately to be contributing instead of taking away wherever he might be deployed.Â
upon learning of this, bazâs father was upset, refusing to even attempt to understand his sonâs reservations about the military. after a yelling match that took place over phone, baz left for deployment soon after without another word to his father. he also made the choice to begin using his motherâs last name as his own, wanting to escape being associated with his fatherâs name for once in his life.Â
( tw: ptsd ) baz spent his deployment overseas willing away the remaining days until he could return home. when he finally did, after medical discharge due to a lingering shoulder injury, he found civilian life difficult to adjust to â after years on a military schedule, constantly looking over his shoulder for either threats or people in danger who needed his attention, the quietness of everyday life was unsettling. he was eventually diagnosed with ptsd and placed in treatment, which has helped him immensely. about seven years ago, after a few years of feeding and caring for a stray cat, he ended up officially adopting the feline who now acts as his companion. ( end tw )
( tw: drugs ) feeling aimless upon returning home, baz went through a string of dead end jobs that left him feeling hopeless. in this time, due to his injury from his time overseas, he started overusing prescription medications. the time when he was using a lot is mostly a blur; itâs only certain points that stick out to him, like coming to at a hospital where a kind doctor was able to empathize with his issue â drug abuse exacerbated by chronic pain and ptsd â and pointed him in the directions of narcotics anonymous. the road was always winding, but now heâs five years clean of any hard drugs. ( end tw )
baz decided to pursue higher education again, wanting to carve out his own career in a path that had nothing to do with the military. in the end, he chose law school and ended up choosing to become a public defender. this was somewhat inspired by his time in the forces, during which he became somewhat distrustful of the government and the justice system as he had known it when he was a kid â working as a defender and helping innocent and wrongly convicted people has done wonders for easing bazâs remaining sense of guilt.
