Gates of Hell ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Location: Big Sur, CA ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• A close-up of some gorgeous light shining through the keyhole in Big Sur during the alignment. I caught this as a wave was crashing through, helping enhance the beam with some mist, and creating a nice waterfall effect behind the arch. I’ve been here several times but this was my first time for this event. Too bad it didn’t align with MW season to kill 2 birds with 1 stone, but I’m sure I’ll be back in the future to see this again. A Tunnel by another Name ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Location: Yosemite National Park, CA ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• A view of a tunnel but one that doesn’t go by the same name. So so so many shots of tunnel view that I knew it was something I wasn’t going to shoot during my recent trip. We were up higher shooting down towards the Merced and Yosemite Valley catching some awesome fog flowing through the trees when the fog just rose up and engulfed us. The glow from this tunnel along with the misty mood were enough to get me to shoot this one. I framed the curving ledge in the foreground leading into the scene. Alien Pods ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Location: Joshua Tree National Park, CA ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Boom. Here’sone of my new faves from JTNP. It’s a version of the barker dam MW shot without the human element. With the previous shot I toned down the exposure on the rocks so that it wouldn’t conflict with the human and lantern light. In this version I kept it brighter to really show the details and patterns in the rocks. The perfect reflection kind of made the rocks look like a couple of alien ships waiting to take off. The WB is cooler here and not as yellow, giving the rocks a more natural tone. I’m really glad we were able to catch water in the dam. Even better that we had the entire place to ourselves all night. Another hidden gem in the desert. Leaving Cole behind and heading back up to Santa Barbara for a quick weekend getaway. This will probably be the last trip we take before we go on lockdown mode for the baby, it’s getting real! Fun little personal tid bit of information, my wife and I both went to the same high school in the same graduating class but never talked until our freshman year of college at UCSB. We knew of each other but hung around different groups of people but also had mutual friends. That initial connection helped bring us together in a big new place living away from home. We love to go back now to eat around Isla Vista, check out the campus, and eat new places that we couldn’t afford back in college. Earth Wind and Fire ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Location: Palos Verdes, CA ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Here’s another type of shot where the color gets stripped a ton. I came out to see if I could get above the fog but it was burning off towards sunset. I noticed a faint halo so I headed down the hills to find a good comp to line this up. Couldn’t get the full halo with the hillside in view but the yellow mustard hillside provided some additional interest to the shot. Caught a bird in the middle, but probably a bit too small to see here. I love how green our hills were this spring. Definitely allowed me to venture out to different areas to catch all the spring goodness. Moonlit Monolith ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Location: Joshua Tree National Park, CA ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Here’s the first startrail I setup for during my last trip out to JTNP with @eric.yanagihara while we were waiting for the MW to rise. We found some cool formations around the barker dam area. I shot the foreground at twilight and as we were waiting for the night to fall, the setting moon provided some great side light on the scene so I re-shot my foreground under the moonlight which added some nice shadows to give some extra depth to the shot. I then ran my lapse for the trails and combined them to what you see here. You can see previous water levels on some of the rocks towards the back. This park never disappoints and there is so much to explore here. Honored to have this shot in a page of the recent @royalphotographicsociety journal. This was taken out in Joshua Tree of the lone Juniper and balanced rock. Great subject to shoot along with the Milky Way. This was the shot where I had to wait several hours in between my foreground shot and for the MW to slot into place. Sodium Infused ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Location: Bay Bridge, San Francisco, CA ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Some cool colors over the bay bridge as the fog is injected with the light pollution from all the surrounding sodium lights in the bay. The white contrasts nicely against the orange, giving it more pop and I also kept the exposure on the bridge on the brighter side to help it stand out more. Most of the time I remove the color cast you get from these lights especially if the entire cityscape turns reddish, but in this shot it was singled out in the sky and really enhanced the scene. Wasn’t a planned shot but it looked good as we were walking back from shooting the other tower towards SF. I think this is the only time I’ve shot this tower of the bridge. Can’t wait for another visit! Passageway ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Location: Montana De Oro, CA ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Haven’t posted a seascape in a while so here’s one from my last trip out to Montana De Oro. I came out during a clearing storm and was treated to a very nice moody sky. I found some great foreground rocks and waited for a wave to roll through to snap this. Some cool rock formations out in this area, I’d highly recommend a visit. Anyone have issues with IG where once you upload an image, the color gets desaturated? I notice it with yellows and greens a lot such as with this photo. I’ve tried reducing the file size to IG’s max 1080 resolution, playing with the sliders to compensated and all sorts of things but no matter what it looks bad when it gets uploaded. I’ve also tried various ways to get the file to my phone from email to direct transfer to saving a copy from my website but it’s all the same. It doesn’t happen on FB either, just IG which is even more strange. I can take a screenshot if it to compare after it is uploaded and the color is definitely being stripped. All files uploaded are jpg’s in sRGB. Lit ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• This is the place to be when the marine layer rolls in so I met my man @neohumanity out here for a sesh. It was overcast at home and down at the Malibu beach level before I made the climb up, but as soon as I started climbing up Piuma I broke free and got to witness some amazing fog rolling down the Santa Monica Mountains. I’ve already been here a few times this year but this is probably the best I’ve seen. My trifecta here is the valley full of fog, rays piercing through the peaks, and a nice burn up top. This is pretty damn close, but I’ll be coming back here more during the gloom months to try and snag another. I went a tad wider here to catch the golden hour burn as well as the backlit tree tops to use in my foreground. I hiked up a little ways from the popular pull out to get a slightly different comp. Desert Oasis ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Location: Joshua Tree National Park, CA ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• I’ve caught some decent MW reflections in bodies of water but never startrails so I was excited to dig into this one. The wind had died down a few hours after sunset so after shooting some other trails, @eric.yanagihara and I setup here to try our luck at capturing these reflections. Every now and then gusts of winds would come and disturb the still water, so we just ran our lapse and hoped for the wind to stay calm and luckily it did. The trailing reflections in the water are almost perfect. I made sure to frame in Polaris and the reflection of it as well. I should have positioned the camera slightly lower but still happy with how it came out. Was an awesome trip seeing the dam full of water as it has been pretty dry for the past few years. Little People Big World ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Location: Yosemite National Park, CA ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• I always go into trips prepared with a ton of images in my head that I want to take. In the back of my mind I always know that conditions change and I have to be ready to adapt. But sometimes it’s the shots that I never expect to take that tend to stick out. We were in the meadow watching half dome dip in and out of the fog. When the sun broke through the clouds the valley floor would burn off mist and in this particular case it was right over the walkway across the meadow. I quickly changed lenses to my tele, bumped my ISO a little to freeze the people, and snapped a few. I absolutely love the scale here. Everything here is big, the waterfalls, the granite walls, even the trees, and I feel like this shot displays that aspect of this park. I really enjoy the 2 subjects on the left, I may show a super cropped shot of that one down the road.
