You cannot “become” a witch. Witches are not Harry Potter or most any fiction work. 

Witchcraft is a religion, a practice. You have to worship the gods or the elements for you to practice magick. You need to respect the Earth and you need intent and belief. 

If you’re successful (according to traditional belief) you’ll feel more powerful after your first Samhain (Sow-in)  after starting your craft. (I’m really not sure about this, but I’ve felt it and some of my other pagan friends have too. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.)

“Sephora will start selling entry-level witch kits in October.”

All right witches, listen up.

Sephora is to begin selling a “witch kit” next month featuring a tarot deck, fragrances, a sage bundle, and a rose quartz crystal for $42.

I think it’s wonderful that witchcraft is making a resurgence, but what I don’t think is wonderful, is that a huge corporation like Sephora is trying to tap into this market.

Why don’t I like it?

Because Sephora has their fingers in enough pies and generates over $4 billion in revenue per year.

Because witchcraft produce and supplies should be provided by people with knowledge on the practise(s) and who care enough to make sure their products are ethical, of a high quality, and non-appropriative.

Because Sephora will be stealing business from actual witchcraft and occult centric shops who likely don’t make huge sums of money anyway due to the niche nature of the market.

Because Sephora doesn’t need the fucking money!

So, I urge you to share this post and refrain from purchasing this “entry-level” witch kit (and any future witchcraft related product) from Sephora. Instead, support small, witch-owned businesses. We need you and we’ve got your backs.

Remember that you don’t have to do anything you aren’t comfortable with, and this list isn’t a requirement for witchcraft, just suggestions. Don’t let ANYONE invalidate you as a witch. I see a lot of people posting herbal remedies.

Please, please include the cautions and contradictions with an herb when you recommend it.

Herbs are drugs. Some of them should not be used by pregnant or nursing women (kava kava comes to mind).

Valerian is not a substitute for narcotic sleep aids. Valerian is a narcotic sleep aid.

St. John’s wort messes up the action of oral contraceptives.

Marshmallow root should not be mixed with other medicines or taken at the same time as it can interfere with their action.

Catnip (used for sleep problems) can make already heavy menstrual periods worse.

Offerings were made to gods of the underworld, gods of the night, and the dead themselves.

They included libations such as wine, honey, water, milk, and olive oil.

Food was also given, like fruitcake, grain, and eggs.

Animals, especially black herd animals, were sacrificed.

Human and animal blood was given.

Necromantic rituals were often performed just before sleep, so the dead would appear in dreams.

Most rituals involved digging a large pit in the ground and starting a fire in it. Offerings were poured into the pit or placed around it.

Rituals also done in dark areas or places like graveyards.

A period of fasting, purification, and self-denial was commonly exercised for a few days prior to summoning the dead.
