Synthetic landscape fabric is widely sold as a weed control solution but tends to fail over several years as organic matter accumulates on top and weeds root into the fabric itself. As it degrades, it fragments into persistent synthetic particles rather than breaking down. A deep layer of wood chip does the same job, improves the soil as it decomposes, and is free if you have a local tree surgeon willing to drop a load.
