Bas grew up in a household that was supportive of whatever he wanted to do. Even though his father was constantly busy, Bas looked up to the man. He looked up to both his parents, going after what they wanted to in their careers and lives. Although he was the youngest of all his siblings, Bas didn't do much to try and hog the attention from his other siblings. He was content to quietly sit in the corner and watch them rough house or do something to get in trouble. But the second that they did get into trouble, he was the first one they came to. From a young age, Bas harbored a natural habit of arguing. Be it standing up for someone that was being bullied to filibustering nap time, Bas was often the center of attention at home for his natural argumentative abilities.
When Bas came out as trans to his family, he was immediately accepted by everyone. He had always known that he didn't feel like he belonged in his body and when he found a forum online with other people his age talking about feeling the same way, he immediately felt better. His family immediately accepted him and helped him to choose and change his name. Being in California, Bas didn't have much of a problem with being accepted and was very vocal in the various support groups that he went to with other queer children his age. While figuring out who he was took some time, Bas is proud of the person that he is and the person that he wants to become. He's incredibly grateful for the support he got from his family members.
In schoo, Bas was always one of the top students. Although it was very apparent from a young age that he was ADHD. Often getting lost in the projects he would take on, Bas sometimes went so off topic that he had trouble completing certain assignments. Things got easier when he was put on medication. Bas wasn't valedictorian of his classmates, but he did finish in the top 2% of his classes and did well enough that he got into Yale. Coming from a family who valued hard work, he knew that he was set. It scared him to move away, but Bas knew it was best for his future career. He left Aurora Bay in the dust, thinking that he'd come home for holidays and the summer, but get opportunities all over the country and finish at law school.
College was good for him... until it wasn't. Bas always had the idea that he was going to get his bachelor's degree and then go to law school. But college was a lot tougher than he expected. He stopped taking his medication correctly, often popping multiple pills to stay up and get his assignments done. He'd stay up two or three days in a row and then crash. Between being on an entirely different coast away from his family and feeling like he was falling behind on assignments, Bas struggled through his first semester of college. He didn't say anything when he got back, feeling like a failure. Although his grades ended up not terrible, they weren't what he expected them to be. He went back to school for his second semester and his problems only got worse. In the end, he realized that it wasn't sustainable. Midway through the semester he called Celine and she encouraged him to drop out and go home.
For the rest of the year he got a job working at Driftwood as a barista until he could figure out what his plan was as well as get himself back on a good track with his medication. When he finally felt in control of everything, he still wanted to be a lawyer and knew he'd have to take a different path to get there. Bas spent two years getting a license to be a paralegal. At twenty two, he got hired by a local law office as a paralegal and transferred to Aurora Bay College to work on becoming a lawyer. He is in his second year of school, while he works full time.

"Why am I immediately picturing the slug lady from Monsters Inc?" she asks with a stifled smile. "No, that's exactly who she's like," Bas nodded with a little laugh. "Except she's less intimidating because she can hold your job over your head and more just... incompetent." He didn't like to be mean, but it was difficult not to when he was frustrated. "Something like that. It's not the worst thing I could be doing with my time. I always think about all the homework I have to do." He shook his head. "Paralegal, so sort of, but with more work."
"The records room is what I would imagine spending a day in a coffin would feel like," Edie thinks out loud as she flick a bit of ash near her foot and grinds it down into the cement with the toe of her boot.
The records room was stuffy, badly lit, and somehow always had a feeling of heaviness.
She preferred to take pictures of the files she needed and review them elsewhere.
"I'm definitely behind where I need to be. I can't wait to get through all of it and get into practice."
She takes another inhale, nodding along to his answer.
"That's very noble work. My parents were immigrants -- the legal process is a headache."
"I think so too, but my little paralegal brain can't help but think I'd be better at it than half the people they hire." Did they not know the alphabet? Bas didn't understand how some of these people got hired. Or did they move them there when they got too old to do other types of work.
"Yeah, that's how I feel about all of it. I have a year left before I even think about law school classes." He felt so far behind because of having to leave Yale, but that was his own fault and he didn't have a fire under his ass these days.
"It is. I'm hoping that I can help make it easier for the people I work with."
"As it should." Like Bas, very selected people got to see a bad side of her. People in government with ill intentions definitely brought out a less-than-kind-Celine. "Well, that's certainly something." she chuckled lightly. "There's always something happening in the behind the scenes of the hospital. Someone recently got fired for stealing little random shit here and there. Nothing crazy or important either. Like if I'm gonna lose my job, I'm gonna make it worth it."
Bas didn't really get annoyed or angry at people. Mostly himself when he got a bad grade, mostly the government for a lot of random various things. "If you say so. I'm kind of over these family cases that I have to be part of right now." He didn't really like these kinds of cases and wasn't going into family law. "Well that's interesting." He laughed. "Right, like steal me a year's supply of Adderall or something."
"Okay, but please tell me you're at least getting your ramen from an Asian market?" You can doctor Top Ramen up as much as you want, but it's always going to taste like hot garbage to Blossom. "Well, don't forget to make a stop to your sister's house. I'll let her cook for both our sakes. I'd also like a souvenir if you go anywhere cool." @basespinosa
"Where else would I get ramen from? Walmart? know I don't shop there." He might have been a broke college kid, but he was a broke college kid with a full time job who lived in housing campus with parents that lived in town. Bas was not bleeding for money. "I won't forget to do that. You should text me if she makes something Cuban so I can show up," he joked. Bas would always show up for Cuban food. "Of course. I'll get keychains or something fun."

"Oh, no, it'll for sure leave the office in flames. I'm a paralegal. There's a couple of other ones at the office, but still. It's usually enough work that the few of us are always stressed."
"My dad listened to 80's music too but it was like Bruce Springsteen." Showing off the headphones again, she urges him to take them. "Can you like at least pretend to try the headphones? I'm supposed to be getting people to buy them and so far I can't even get people to try them. I promise I won't make you listen to anything weird." @basespinosa
Bas grew up in a very different household. He'd made sure that his parents celebrated their culture. Because it was important to him. "Yeah, sure. You can play something weird, I don't really care." He took the headphones from her tentatively. Bas didn't need new headphones though. "How long have you worked here?" he asked.
"Telling my parents that I was trans was probably the scariest thing I ever had to do. I mean it ended up being okay, but it was terrifying telling them because there's always a chance that they wouldn't understand or being accepting."
"Now that's a summer plan." Dominic said, chuckling lightly. They were already living in paradise, just needed to actually make time to enjoy it. Being a full-time student while also working didn't always leave time to enjoy everything that Aurora Bay had to offer. "I mean, they're usually not planned if I'm being honest. But I'll certainly be working a lot. I gotta save up so I can take my girl out on some nice dates."
"Yeah, I think so too. I'm kind of excited to get some time to relax for a bit. My sister-in-law wants me to come visit her and my sister. Which I mean obviously I'm going to do. They live here." Bas wanted to spend time with all his family. "Really? You not big on planning stuff?" Bas liked a good plan. He hated pivoting when plans didn't work. "Aw, I'm sure she'll appreciate that."
A hint of amusement crosses her features, and she has to fight the immediate urge to ask, 'then how did they get hired?' She keeps her gaze on the man as he continues, Amara nodding with his words. "It, um... Definitely seems like they need a better system in place or something? Or... better people." She relents on the last part, releasing the words before she has a chance to decide otherwise. "Maybe both."

"It's probably the old lady at the front desk who I'm convinced can't actually read." Now that was being way too dramatic. "Her glasses are like... half an inch thick, I swear." No wonder people didn't like lawyers when this was the type of stuff that happened in the legal world more often than often. "Probably both, but it's the legal system. It's slow and frustrating for most people involved."

She didn't care enough about his fresh air to leave the bench entirely, but an effort had been made.
"Really? I feel like once I'm in there I'm going to want to fly through everything for the sake of being done."
"No, it's cool. It's not really bothering me. I mean this is fresher than the records room for sure." Bas hated the records room.
"I thought that I'd be like that too. I was in an accelerated program when I was at Yale, but that didn't work out." He was trying to go slowly now because it was easier for him. That's why he was going about this the way he was. "Working too quickly was not working for me." And Bas was okay with this.
"Immigration. It's what I've always wanted to do."
"Are you going to come and visit your sister and me? I'd be kind of hurt if you didn't at least stop by. Unless you're doing something fun for break?" @basespinosa
"Well obviously. That's the best way to get fed something other than the emergency ramen I have in my dorm. It's starting to run low. I did plan on taking a week to do something out of town. I haven't decided where yet."
"Well they probably had Salsa music in the 90's?" Bentley suggests, "it's been around for like awhile, actually." Crinkling her nose, "maybe music you dance to isn't the best kind to listen to if you're wearing headphones with wires, you might get pulled back, but anything else is okay. I'd totally play it for you if I was still allowed to pick the store's music."
"They did, but I grew up on 80s salsa music. Because that's what my parents listened to." Bas listened to mostly newer music. "That's okay. I don't really dance anyways. I have a terrible sense in rhythm." He'd dance if he had to, though he did prefer to watch people dance. "I mostly keep music on in the background while I'm working to focus, so maybe headphones like that aren't exactly the best."
